"What?!" She shot back, though her words were slurred and her eyes heavy-lidded-she'd worked through a half-dozen glasses of wine, and the warmth of it was settling deep in her limbs, making the world feel soft and unsteady.
Lucian laughed, low and warm. He'd had a few drinks too, but his tolerance kept him sharp-he wasn't about to get drunk tonight, not when he'd waited so long for this.
He glanced at the wall clock visible from the balcony. Over an hour had passed since they'd started drinking, talking mostly about her life before she'd met him. She'd poured out everything-grievances with her family, the pain they'd caused, tangled up with longing for their lectures, their presence.
