Jinx was already in her room, leaning against the door, her hand pressed to her chest. A laugh bubbled up from her throat—soft at first, then louder, until she was laughing in sheer relief.
She had done it. She had actually done it.
She walked to the small mirror on the wall and looked at her reflection. Her auburn eyes were bright, her cheeks flushed. She looked alive in a way she had not looked in years.
Quite a good actor, she thought to herself. Who knew?
Of course, she would rather burn than let Fenris touch her. The thought of his hands on her made her skin crawl. But he did not know that. He would never know that. This was all part of the plan—her plan—and so far, it was working perfectly.
The media would have spread the news by now. The footage of her alive, of her in Fenris's bed, of the "perfect couple" reunited after tragedy. The whole sector would be talking about it. And that was exactly what she wanted.
A knock came at the door.
