Chapter 24 - Chapter-24:The After Effect

Nothing looked different.

That was the strangest Part.

Christopher walked into school like he always did---bag slung over one shoulder, expression calm.

Zia took her seat with the same composed grace.

Teachers taught. Bells rang.

And yet ---

Everything felt sharper .

Christopher noticed it in himself first .

The way his focus drifted.

The way silence no longer felt empty.

Leo caught it too.

"You're lighter," Leo said during lunch ,studying him.

"Not happy. Just ...steadier."

Ethan grinned. "That's worse. Means something good happened and you're not telling. "

Christopher didn't deny it.

He just smiled.

Across the courtyard, Zia stood with her friends, laughing softly. But when her eyes met Christopher's---from distance, brief and careful---there was an understanding there.

No rush .

No signal.

Just shared knowing.

Jason felt it before he saw it .

"You're somewhere else lately, "he said that afternoon, tone controlled.

"Not physically. Mentally. "

Zia adjusted her bag strap ."Maybe I finally am."

Jason studied her.

"You're hiding something. "

Zia met his gaze calmly.

"No .I'm protecting it."

That answer unsettled him more than denial would have.

Meanwhile, Sofee watched everything too closely.

The way Christopher no longer lingered when she spoke.

The way Zia didn't flinch under pressure anymore.

The way distance had turned intentional.

She cornered Ethan later.

"You're noticed it too ,right?"

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Noticing is kind of your thing."

Sofee frowned. "Somethings going on ."

Ethan shrugged. "Something always is."

That evening, Christopher found a folded note inside his book.

Same place. Tomorrow?

His chest tightened--not with fear.

With certainty.

He didn't reply.

He didn't need to.

The secret wasn't loud.

It wasn't reckless.

It was changing them quietly---

the way real things do .

And that scared the people

Who no longer had control.
