Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 : Confrontation

"Hello."

"Are you alright?"

"Uh..."

Her voice woke me from my daydreaming. I smiled towards her and said, "I am alright, I was just thinking about something."

It was only a few seconds, when a voice erupted from behind us.

"Emily, what are you doing with this worthless boy?"

I knew the voice from anywhere, it was the voice of the son of the wealthiest man alive, Edward Norman. He treats me like a piece of trash, because of my poor upbringing. I couldn't blame him, in order for me to fund this expedition, I had to ask for help from the leading researchers in historical knowledge, the Norman Corporation.

For them to help me, I had to sign a contract. The first basis of the contract was that I had to take him to the unknown and I have to ensure his safety. The second basis states that every treasure found there would be distributed in 60:40, 60 goes for them, while 40 goes to me. And the facilities and equipment necessary for the expedition shall be provided by them.

It was a fair deal, but I knew there was more to it than met the eye.

I was about to reply when the captain brought distressing news. "Everyone listen to me, it seems we are under attack by something. I know you might not believe me, but just before Bravo 4 went out, they sent a message," The captain frowned his brows as he said those statements. He then pressed a button and with it a voice came out.

"Alpha 1, we...are...under attack by some monsters we can't even see...please, help us." Several other different voices came out. One could know that those voices were inhuman, they were like screeching of animals.

"And this happened to the rest of the other submarines," the captain added. "Are you saying that we are the last remaining," Edward said with a hint of fear.

You could notice his arrogant demeanor had changed to express his true self. "Possibly and maybe the next to be attacked," A voice in the shadow said.

Everyone stared at the location where the voice was made and saw the silhouette who made the voice. The person was called Quinn simply, but I knew there was more to this man, just staring at him gives me goosebumps. Maybe he is part of the Norman Corporation that was secretly sent to watch Edward, that was the only possible explanation that I could think of.

There was an unnatural silence everywhere, the whole situation was dire. Everyone was thinking about how to escape the situation, except one person, Mark.

Mark seems to be a person who doesn't actually read the room, because his next statement didn't fit the situation.

"Hmm...I still don't get it," He said. Nobody batted him an eye as they were lost in thought. I stared at him and gave him a smile, then returned back to my thoughts.

'If the monsters attacked the other submarines, it might also mean they will attack us or not. We can't contact the others,so, we don't know whether they are alive or not. From here on, we might have to do things alone.'

A voice finally broke the silence. "If I am right, those monsters might be the guardians of the unknown meaning we are getting close." The person who spoke it had a feminine voice, everyone stared at Emily as she said those sentences.

Only three words were playing in everyone's mind,'near the unknown'. "But, first of all we must deal with those damn monsters," Emily's voice was filled with hatred for something, the monsters.

Nobody knew why she hated the monsters, but I have few guesses. First of all, maybe someone dear to her was in one of those submarines and when she heard about the monsters' attack, the hatred in her was released. The other guess is quite simple, she just hated them.

"Easier said than done, Miss Emily," Quinn spoke with amusement trying to provoke her. "Then suggest another solution, Mister Quinn," she returned a devilish smile towards Quinn.

"Hmmph, everyone we are going to die," he said plainly. "What?!" That was the word that came out of everyone's mouth. "...but, we are not going to die, if you all follow my commands," he proclaimed, standing tall and beaming with confidence.

I frowned as I heard that and it made me start thinking, 'This really cements my guess earlier, he is one of them, but why will they him to gain command of the team? Unless, they found out something about the unknown.'

Emily who sat near me, whispered something into my ear, "Don't trust anyone."

'As expected, l never did pick anyone of these people except Emily. It seems Norman has influence in these set of people,' I thought in my mind.

"This is going to be an unforgettable expedition," I whispered back to her.
