Chapter 16 - The Weight of Choice

The fortress felt… restless.

Not haunted.

Not cursed.

Just uneasy.

As if the walls themselves were waiting for something to happen — or something to break.

Luna stood in the training courtyard, fists wrapped, breathing slow and controlled.

Seren Vale watched her from the stone steps, arms crossed, expression sharp and assessing.

"You're hitting like you're trying to punch a memory," Seren said.

Luna snorted. "Memories deserve it."

Seren arched a brow. "Who hurt you?"

"Take a number," Luna replied. "We're very busy."

Seren smirked faintly — then her expression softened. "You're not fine."

"I'm alive," Luna said. "That's close enough."

Seren shook her head. "You've always been bad at lying to your best friend."

Luna froze.

"Best friend?" she echoed.

Seren tilted her head. "What? You thought I crossed realms and almost got executed just to haunt you?"

Luna stared.

Then laughed.

Then nearly cried.

"Seren," she breathed.

They collided in a hug — fast, fierce, real.

Kael, watching from the archway, stiffened.

Rowan stood beside him, arms folded.

"You didn't tell me she was… like this,"

Rowan muttered.

Kael's gaze didn't leave Luna. "She's always like this."

Rowan raised an eyebrow. "You sound like you've known her for years."

Kael didn't respond.

Seren pulled back, studying Luna's face.

"You look different."

"Traumatized?" Luna guessed.

"Stronger," Seren corrected. "And… in love."

Luna choked. "I beg your absolute pardon."

Seren smirked. "I have eyes."

Kael shifted uncomfortably.

Rowan looked between them. "…

Interesting."

Later, Luna sat with Seren on the balcony, legs dangling over the edge.

"You didn't tell me about him," Seren said.

"Which one?" Luna replied.

Seren snorted. "The vampire lord who looks like he hasn't slept in a century and somehow still cares."

"He doesn't care," Luna said.

Seren stared at her. "Luna."

"Okay," Luna admitted. "He cares."

"And you care back."

Silence.

"…Yes," Luna whispered.

Seren smiled. "Good."

Below them, Kael and Rowan sparred.

Not violently.

Not gently.

Intentionally.

"You're holding back," Rowan said.

"I'm restraining myself," Kael replied.

"That's worse."

Kael lunged.

Rowan dodged.

Steel clashed.

Power crackled.

Luna leaned forward. "Should we stop them?"

Seren shook her head. "No. This is emotional therapy."

Later that night, Luna found Kael in the library.

He stood near the shelves, scrolling through ancient tomes with a precision that suggested distraction.

"You're avoiding me," Luna said.

"I'm working," he replied.

"You're alphabetizing trauma," she said.

"Come here."

He turned.

Reluctantly.

"What is it?" he asked.

"You're jealous," she said.

"I am not."

"Kael."

"…I am."

She smiled faintly. "Thank you."

"For what?"

"For being honest."

Silence.

Then he said, "He still wants you."

"Yes."

"And you still care about him."

"Yes."

"That bothers me."

"I know."

"But you're choosing me," he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

"Yes."

He stepped closer. "Why?"

"Because you stay," she said. "Not because you have to. Because you choose to."

"That's not love," he said.

"It's the beginning of it."

Silence.

Then he said, "I don't want to own you."

"I don't want to be owned."

"Good," he said. "Because I only want to stand beside you."

She reached for his hand.

He froze.

Then slowly intertwined his fingers with hers

.

The bond pulsed — warm, steady, alive.

Not as a chain.

As a choice.

A scream echoed through the fortress.

Luna stiffened. "That wasn't normal."

Kael released her hand instantly. "That was Seren."

Rowan was already running.

They found her in the lower hall — bloodied, shaking, standing over a fallen assassin.

"I told him no," Seren said flatly. "He didn't listen."

Luna stared. "You killed him."

Seren wiped her blade. "I warned him."

Kael's eyes narrowed. "He bore the mark of the Eclipse King."

Luna felt her stomach drop.

"He's already here," she whispered.

"And now," Rowan said grimly, "he knows about her."

Seren met Luna's gaze. "About you."

The war had begun.
