Chapter 18 - The Price of Power

The morning came without peace.

Not soft.

Not gentle.

It came sharp, like a blade sliding between ribs.

Luna woke with the bond burning.

Not warm.

Not steady.

Burning.

She gasped and sat upright, clutching her chest as pain pulsed through her veins — not physical, not magical — emotional, raw, unfiltered.

"Kael," she whispered.

The room was empty.

That alone told her something was wrong.

She was on her feet in seconds, bare feet striking cold stone as she ran through the corridors, heart pounding with a fear she refused to name.

The bond tugged — not toward safety — but toward danger.

Toward chaos.

Toward blood.

She followed it.

The fortress was awake now.

Guards ran.

Doors slammed.

Voices rose in panic.

"Where is he?" Luna demanded, grabbing a passing soldier.

"South tower!" he shouted. "There's been a breach!"

Her stomach dropped.

She ran.

The south tower was chaos.

Smoke curled through shattered windows.

Stone lay broken across the floor.

Blood stained the walls.

Kael stood at the center of it all — blade drawn, coat torn, eyes blazing — facing something that did not belong in this world.

A shadow.

Not darkness — but absence.

Like the world itself had been erased where it stood.

And before it…

Rowan.

On his knees.

Blood dripping from his side.

Luna's heart shattered.

"ROWAN!" she screamed.

He turned — barely — eyes widening when he saw her.

"Don't—" he tried to say.

Too late.

The shadow lunged.

Kael moved.

Steel met nothing.

Magic collided with void.

The impact threw Kael backward into the wall.

Luna didn't think.

She ran.

She dropped beside Rowan, hands glowing instinctively as she pressed them to his wound.

"Stay with me," she whispered. "Don't you dare leave me."

He coughed. "You always say that."

"And you always listen," she snapped.

Blood soaked her hands.

The shadow shifted — watching.

Waiting.

"Luna," Rowan whispered. "Listen."

"No," she said. "You don't get to talk right now."

He smiled weakly. "Still bossy."

"Shut up," she said, tears blurring her vision.

"You're not dying."

He reached for her wrist. "He's not here for me."

Her breath hitched. "Don't."

"He's here for you," Rowan continued. "And Kael."

Luna shook her head. "I won't let him take you."

"I know," Rowan said softly. "But I'm not what he wants."

The shadow moved again.

Closer.

The air grew cold.

Kael staggered to his feet, blood running down his temple.

"Luna," he said sharply. "Get away from him."

She looked up at him, wild-eyed. "I won't leave him."

"I know," Kael said. "But you have to trust me."

"Trust you to what?" she snapped. "Let him die?"

Kael's voice broke. "No. Trust me to fight."

The shadow spoke.

Not aloud.

Inside their minds.

Give me the witch…

The temperature dropped.

And the human lives.

Luna froze.

Rowan's eyes widened. "No."

Kael stiffened. "Don't listen to him."

The voice continued.

He is not the one I want.

You are.

Luna's heart pounded.

Rowan grabbed her hand weakly. "Don't. You are not a bargain."

Kael's gaze burned. "You don't get to choose who dies."

The shadow tilted — curious.

Then choose who lives.

Silence fell.

Luna's hands shook.

She looked at Rowan — bleeding, fading, still trying to smile.

She looked at Kael — wounded, furious, terrified.

She looked at the shadow — ancient, patient, inevitable.

And she understood.

This was the price.

Not blood.

Choice.

She stood.

"Luna," Kael said sharply.

She turned to him. "I'm not giving myself to him."

"Then what are you doing?" he demanded.

"I'm making a counteroffer."

The shadow paused.

Luna lifted her chin. "You don't want me dead. You want me broken."

The shadow did not deny it.

"You want control," she continued. "Power. Fear."

The air trembled.

"I won't give you my body," she said. "But I will give you something better."

Kael's heart pounded. "Luna, don't."

She ignored him.

"I will open myself to your magic," she said.

"Not permanently. Not fully. But enough."

The shadow stilled.

Kael's eyes widened. "No."

"You get a taste," Luna said. "Not ownership."

Rowan stared. "Luna, no."

"You take me," she continued, "not as your prisoner… but as your battlefield."

The shadow shifted — intrigued.

You would invite me into your soul?

"Yes," Luna said. "But only on my terms."

Kael's voice broke. "You'll die."

She looked at him.

"No," she said. "I'll survive."

Silence.

Then…

Agreed.

The shadow lunged.

Not at her body.

At her mind.

Pain exploded through her skull.

Luna screamed.

Kael ran.

He grabbed her.

Magic collided.

The bond burned white-hot.

Inside Luna's mind, everything shattered.

Memories cracked.

Walls collapsed.

Voices screamed.

And through it all…

A voice.

Cold.

Ancient.

Curious.

Let us see what you are made of, little witch.

She fell.

Not physically.

Internally.

Into darkness.

Into fire.

Into a place no human soul was meant to walk.

Kael caught her body before it hit the ground.

"LUNA!" he roared.

Rowan tried to stand. Failed.

"Don't let her go," he whispered.

Kael held her, shaking, pressing his forehead to hers.

"I won't," he said fiercely. "I swear."

The shadow receded.

Not gone.

Not defeated.

Inside her.

Waiting.

Luna's eyes fluttered.

Once.

Twice.

Then closed.

Her body stilled.

Her magic went silent.

The bond…

Did not break.

It changed.

And far away, in a palace of shadow and light, the Eclipse King smiled.

"The game," he murmured, "has become interesting."
