The first thing Luna felt was the bond.
Not burning.
Not breaking.
Listening.
She opened her eyes slowly.
Stone ceiling.
Torchlight.
The familiar scent of magic, blood, and old books.
The fortress.
"I'm alive," she murmured.
"You are," Kael said instantly. "And don't ever scare me like that again."
She turned her head.
He was sitting on the floor beside her bed, back against the wall, arms crossed, eyes exhausted — like he hadn't moved in hours.
"You slept," she said.
"I waited," he corrected.
She smiled faintly. "That's worse."
He didn't smile back.
"Luna," he said quietly, "he's inside you."
Her smile faded.
"I know."
Silence.
She sat up slowly. "But he's not in control."
Kael studied her. "How do you know?"
"Because," she said, "if he were… I wouldn't still be me."
The door opened.
Seren entered, face bruised but sharp, followed by Rowan, pale but upright.
"You're awake," Seren said. "Good. I was starting to get offended."
Luna blinked. "You almost died."
Seren shrugged. "Minor inconvenience."
Rowan smiled weakly. "You scared us."
"I scared myself," Luna admitted.
Kael stood. "Tell us what happened."
She took a breath.
"He didn't take me," she said. "He… entered."
Kael stiffened.
"Not my body," she continued. "My mind. My memories. My past."
Seren's expression darkened. "That's worse."
"It was," Luna agreed. "But not for me."
Rowan frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I showed him something," she said. "Not intentionally. But it happened."
Kael's eyes narrowed. "What?"
"My childhood," Luna said. "My mother. My loss. My fear."
Silence.
"He didn't expect it," she added. "He
expected weakness."
Seren scoffed. "Instead he got trauma."
"No," Luna said. "He got love."
That made them all pause.
"He doesn't understand it," Luna continued. "Not the way we do. Not the way it survives pain. Not the way it chooses to exist even when everything is broken."
Kael's voice was low. "And that matters because…?"
"Because," Luna said, "he didn't just see my past."
She looked up.
"He felt it."
Rowan's breath hitched. "You mean—"
"Yes," Luna said. "For the first time, he didn't just observe pain. He experienced it."
Kael's jaw tightened. "That makes him more dangerous."
"Or more human," Luna said.
Seren frowned. "That's not comforting."
"It's not meant to be," Luna replied. "But it is useful."
"How?" Kael asked.
"Because he's no longer detached," Luna said. "And a detached enemy is predictable.
An emotional one is not — but they're also vulnerable."
Rowan crossed his arms. "You're saying you made the Eclipse King feel something."
"Yes," Luna said. "And he hated it."
Kael exhaled sharply. "That could make him retaliate."
"It will," Luna said. "But not blindly."
Seren narrowed her eyes. "What will he do?"
Luna's expression hardened. "He will come for my past."
Silence fell.
"What does that mean?" Rowan asked.
"He will search for anything connected to my bloodline," Luna said. "My mother. My family.
My magic."
Kael's voice dropped. "There's nothing left."
"There is," Luna said. "He just doesn't know where."
Seren stiffened. "You do?"
"Yes," Luna said quietly.
Kael stared. "You've been hiding something."
"I've been protecting it," Luna corrected.
"What?" Rowan asked.
She hesitated.
Then spoke.
"My mother didn't die," Luna said.
The room froze.
Seren's eyes widened. "You said—"
"I said I thought she died," Luna replied. "But I never saw a body. I never felt her magic vanish."
Kael's breath hitched. "You believe she survived."
"I know she did," Luna said. "I felt her presence for years after the fire. Faint.
Hidden. But alive."
Silence thundered.
"And I think," Luna continued, "she didn't just survive."
She met Kael's gaze.
"She's part of something bigger."
Rowan whispered, "Like what?"
"Like the original resistance," Luna said.
"The first ones who fought the Eclipse King before he became what he is."
Kael's eyes darkened. "If that's true…"
"Then he's not just hunting me," Luna finished. "He's hunting her."
Seren cursed softly. "So we're back to square one."
"No," Luna said. "We're ahead."
"How?" Kael asked.
"Because now," Luna said, "we know what he wants."
"And we can use that."
Kael studied her. "You're not afraid."
"I am," Luna admitted. "But I'm not powerless."
She stood.
"He entered my mind," she said. "Which means… I can enter his."
Kael stiffened. "No."
"I'm not saying now," Luna said. "I'm saying soon."
"That could kill you," Kael snapped.
She stepped closer. "So could doing
nothing."
Silence.
Then Rowan said, "He'll come again."
"Yes," Luna replied.
"And next time," Seren added, "it won't be subtle."
"No," Luna said. "It will be personal."
The bond pulsed.
Not with fear.
With warning.
Somewhere far away, in a throne room of shadow and silver…
The Eclipse King touched his chest.
Not in pain.
In confusion.
For the first time in centuries, something inside him… ached.
Not hunger.
Not rage.
Something else.
And he hated it.
"I will not be weakened by a witch," he whispered.
"I will destroy her past."
And with it…
Her future.
But Luna Vale had already learned something he hadn't.
The past was not a weakness.
It was a weapon.
And she was done running from it.
