Chapter 5 - Shadows Don’t Wait

Luna didn't sleep.

Not really.

She lay on the cold stone bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to the soft echo of dripping water and the quieter echo of her own thoughts.

Sacrifice.

The word sat heavy in her chest.

She turned onto her side.

Kael had placed guards outside her chamber — not because he feared an attack…

…but because he feared her.

Or worse — he feared what she might choose.

Wow, she thought. Imagine being so emotionally unstable that a vampire lord assigns bodyguards to stop you from being heroic.

She sighed.

"…I hate being the responsible one," she muttered.

The door creaked open.

She sat up instantly.

"Before you say anything," she said, "I'm not escaping, summoning demons, or throwing myself into an ancient pit."

Kael stepped inside, shutting the door behind him.

"…That's an oddly specific list."

She gave him a tired smile. "Experience."

He crossed the room, his presence heavy with tension.

"You should be resting," he said.

"I tried. My brain rejected the concept."

Silence.

Then—

"…You scared me," he admitted.

Her smile faded.

"I know."

He looked at her like he was trying to memorize her face.

"You disappeared," he continued. "I couldn't feel you. Couldn't track you. Couldn't—"

His voice broke.

"I thought I lost you."

Her chest tightened.

"I'm still here," she whispered.

He stepped closer.

"For how long?" he asked.

Her breath caught.

"…That's unfair."

"It's reality."

She swallowed.

"…The shadow figure said the curse is accelerating."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"I know."

Her eyes widened.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

She stared at him.

"And you didn't think to tell me?"

"I was trying to find another solution."

She scoffed softly.

"Let me guess. One that doesn't involve me dying."

"Exactly."

She sighed.

"Kael… sometimes there is no other solution."

"There is always another way," he snapped.

"You just don't want to look for it."

Her voice sharpened.

"No. You don't want to accept it."

Silence.

The tension between them thickened, crackling like a storm.

"…He offered me a deal," she said quietly.

Kael froze.

"What deal?"

"To break the curse… by becoming its vessel."

His eyes darkened.

"No."

"Kael—"

"No," he repeated, stepping closer. "You will not."

She crossed her arms.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I do when it costs your life."

"And what about your life?" she shot back.

"That doesn't matter?"

His voice dropped dangerously.

"My life ended centuries ago."

Her heart clenched.

"That's not true," she said softly.

"It is."

"No," she insisted. "You're alive. You feel.

You care. You just pretend you don't."

He looked away.

"…I don't deserve to live."

Her breath hitched.

"What?"

"The curse exists because of me," he said.

"Every death it causes is my fault."

She stepped closer.

"You didn't ask to be cursed."

"I asked for power."

"…To survive."

"And now others suffer for it."

She reached for his hand.

"That doesn't mean you deserve to die."

He flinched.

"…I don't deserve you," he said quietly.

Her eyes softened.

"Good," she replied. "Because I'm not a reward. I'm a problem."

He almost smiled.

"An infuriating one."

"Glad we agree."

Silence fell again — softer this time.

"…I won't let you sacrifice yourself," he said.

She tilted her head.

"…Even if it saves the world?"

"Yes."

"…Even if it saves you?"

"Yes."

Her heart ached.

"…That's selfish."

He met her gaze.

"So is wanting to live."

She swallowed.

"…I'm scared."

His expression softened instantly.

"…Of dying?"

"…Of living without you."

His breath caught.

"You won't."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

He reached out, cupping her face gently.

"I will tear apart fate itself before I let you go."

Her eyes burned.

"…You're really bad at giving comforting

speeches."

"Good," he murmured. "I'm not trying to be comforting."

She leaned into his touch.

"…Then what are you trying to be?"

"Honest."

Her voice dropped.

"…Then be honest."

He looked at her — really looked at her — and whispered:

"I love you."

The world stopped.

Her heart shattered — and healed — all at once.

"…Kael."

"I shouldn't," he continued. "You deserve someone human. Someone safe. Someone who doesn't live in darkness."

She smiled sadly.

"…Too late."

His breath trembled.

"…You're everything I don't deserve."

"And yet," she said softly, "here I am."

Silence.

Heavy. Sacred.

"…Say it back," he whispered.

Her chest tightened.

"…I'm terrified to."

"Why?"

"…Because once I say it, this stops being just a curse."

He tilted his forehead against hers.

"And becomes what?"

"…Something worth dying for."

His heart stopped.

"No," he whispered fiercely. "You are not dying."

She looked at him, eyes filled with pain and love.

"…Then don't give me a reason to."

He pulled her into his arms, holding her like she was the only thing keeping him alive.

"…I won't," he promised.

But the shadows were already moving.

Far beneath the castle…

The shadow figure stood before a pool of black glass.

Within it, Luna's face shimmered.

"She's resisting," he murmured.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

"Break her."

"No," he replied calmly. "I will tempt her."

The pool darkened — showing Kael in chains, bleeding, screaming.

"Love is the easiest curse of all."

Luna woke in the middle of the night, gasping.

The Shadow Sigil on her chest was glowing.

And this time…

Kael was screaming in pain.
