Luna's heart stopped.
Not metaphorically.
Not poetically.
It stopped.
Because the shadow in front of her wasn't just wearing Kael's face — it was wearing his pain.
His eyes.
His expression.
His sadness.
"Kael?" she whispered.
The real Kael stood beside her — alive, breathing — but her mind refused to accept it.
The shadow version tilted its head, smiling softly.
"You called?"
Her chest tightened so hard she thought it might collapse.
"…This isn't funny," she said weakly.
Kael stepped forward, fury blazing in his eyes.
"Get away from her."
The shadow turned to him.
"Why?" it asked calmly. "I'm you."
"No," Kael growled. "You're a lie."
The shadow's smile deepened.
"Aren't all versions of ourselves lies we tell to survive?"
Luna's hands trembled.
Her heart was screaming at her to attack.
Her soul was begging her not to.
"Stop," she whispered. "Please… just stop."
The shadow turned back to her.
"You look tired, Luna."
Her throat tightened.
"…I am."
"You look scared."
"…I am."
"You look like someone who's carrying too much for one heart."
Her breath hitched.
"…I am."
Tears burned her eyes.
The shadow stepped closer.
"You love him."
Her voice broke.
"…Yes."
Kael turned sharply.
"Luna—"
She didn't look at him.
"You're afraid of losing him."
"…Yes."
"You're afraid that loving him will destroy you."
Her knees weakened.
"…Yes."
The shadow smiled.
"Then let me save you from that pain."
Her heart shattered.
"…How?"
"Let me take his place."
Silence exploded.
Kael's blood ran cold.
"What?"
The shadow turned to him.
"Step aside. I can love her better. I can protect her without fear. Without guilt.
Without blood."
Kael's hands clenched.
"She doesn't want you."
The shadow looked at Luna.
"Do you?"
Her breath stopped.
Her heart broke.
"…No," she whispered.
The shadow's smile flickered — just for a second.
Pain flashed through its eyes.
"…You're lying."
She shook her head, tears falling freely now.
"No. I'm not."
"You're scared," the shadow insisted.
"Yes."
"You're hurt.
"Yes."
"You're tired."
Yes.
"But I'm not running," she said, voice shaking. "I'm staying."
"Why?" it demanded.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because loving him hurts… but losing him would destroy me."
The shadow's face darkened.
"Love is a weakness."
"No," she said softly. "Love is the only thing that makes the pain worth surviving."
Kael's chest tightened.
"Luna…"
She finally looked at him.
Her eyes were full of fear — and something stronger.
Trust.
"I choose you," she said. "Even if it hurts. Even if I die. Even if the world burns."
The shadow screamed.
A sound of pure rage and grief.
"You will regret this!"
It lunged.
Kael reacted instantly, throwing himself in front of Luna, absorbing the blow with a grunt.
"Kael!" she cried.
He stumbled — blood spilling from his side.
Her world collapsed.
"No—no—no—no—"
She caught him as he fell, holding him in her arms.
"Stay with me," she begged. "Please stay with me."
His breath was shallow.
"…Still here," he whispered.
Tears poured down her face.
"I can't lose you," she sobbed. "I can't."
The shadow loomed above them.
"You already are."
Something inside Luna snapped.
Not her magic.
Not her power.
Her heart.
Her fear.
Her hesitation.
Her limits.
She stood — slowly — gently placing Kael on the ground.
Her tears dried.
Her voice changed.
Low.
Steady.
Cold.
"No," she said. "I'm done losing."
Dark and light erupted from her at once.
The air cracked.
The ground shook.
The Sigil on her chest burned — but this time, she didn't scream.
She stood.
The shadow recoiled.
"Impossible…"
She stepped forward.
"I'm tired of being scared."
Another step.
"I'm tired of being hunted."
Another.
"I'm tired of watching the people I love suffer."
Her voice trembled — but her power didn't.
"You don't get to wear his face."
"You don't get to touch his pain."
"You don't get to use my love as a weapon."
The shadow tried to strike.
She raised her hand.
It froze.
Her eyes glowed.
"This ends now."
With one motion, she shattered the shadow into nothingness.
Silence fell.
The castle trembled — but held.
Luna collapsed to her knees.
Her strength drained.
Her heart pounding.
Her hands shaking.
She turned to Kael.
He was unconscious — but alive.
She crawled to him, pulling him into her arms.
"Please wake up," she whispered. "Please.
His lashes fluttered.
"…Still… not dead," he murmured weakly.
She laughed through her tears.
"You're not allowed to die."
"Not planning to," he whispered. "You'd haunt me."
She hugged him tightly.
"I already do."
Silence wrapped around them.
Safe.
For now.
But deep in the shadows…
A voice whispered.
"Interesting."
"She's changing."
"And change… is dangerous."
Luna closed her eyes, holding Kael tightly — unaware that someone else had just entered the realm…
Someone watching.
Someone waiting.
Someone who would change everything.
