Chapter 4 - The Realm Beneath the Curse

Luna was falling.

Not the dramatic, arms-flailing kind — more like the slow, silent kind where your stomach drops and your soul follows.

"Okay… okay… this is fine," she muttered.

"I've fallen through worse. Probably."

Darkness swallowed her.

No wind. No sound. Just weightless silence.

Then — impact.

She hit cold stone, breath knocked from her lungs.

"Ow," she croaked. "Gravity, I would like to file a complaint."

She lay there for a moment, blinking into the dark.

The air felt wrong — heavy, like it was watching her.

Slowly, she sat up.

The place around her was vast and hollow, filled with towering black pillars that stretched endlessly upward. The ground shimmered faintly, like cracked glass over darkness.

Purple veins of energy pulsed beneath the surface.

"Okay," she whispered. "Either I'm dead… or I fell into a very dramatic basement."

A soft echo answered her.

Not her voice.

Someone else's.

"You are neither."

Luna froze.

She turned slowly.

A figure stood at the edge of the shadow — tall, cloaked, eyes glowing crimson like burning embers.

Her heart slammed into her ribs.

"Right," she muttered. "Because of course there's a mysterious shadow man."

The figure stepped closer.

"You are in the Netherbound Realm — the place where broken curses go to die."

"That sounds… cheerful."

"Few leave this place alive."

She tilted her head. "I'm sensing a theme."

He studied her with unsettling intensity.

"You are bound to Kael Duskbane."

Her breath caught. "How do you know that?"

His lips curved faintly.

"Because I bound him first."

The air around her thickened.

"…Excuse me?" she said slowly.

"Long before you were born," he continued, "Kael made a bargain with the shadows. And shadows always collect their debt."

Her chest tightened. "What kind of bargain?"

The figure circled her like a predator.

"Power. Immortality. Control."

She clenched her fists. "So you're saying this is all his fault."

"Everything is someone's fault," he replied calmly. "Yours included."

She scoffed. "Wow. You're really leaning into the villain energy."

His gaze sharpened.

"Do you think humor will save you?"

"No," she said honestly. "But it makes dying less awkward."

Silence stretched.

Then he laughed.

It was low. Dangerous.

"Interesting."

She crossed her arms. "So… are you here to kill me, possess me, or monologue?"

"I'm here to offer you a choice."

Her stomach twisted. "I hate choices."

He extended a hand.

Dark light rippled outward, forming an image — Kael, kneeling in blood, chains of shadow wrapped around his body, screaming in pain.

Luna's breath hitched.

"Stop," she whispered.

"This is his fate," the figure said. "The curse will consume him. Slowly. Brutally."

Tears burned her eyes. "You're lying."

"Am I?"

The image shifted — cities burning, skies darkening, monsters pouring through broken realms.

"This is the world if the curse breaks."

Her hands shook.

"…What do you want from me?"

The figure's eyes glowed brighter.

"Your obedience."

She swallowed. "And in return?"

"I spare Kael."

Her heart shattered in her chest.

"…You can't just trade people like that."

"Everything is a trade," he said. "Even love."

She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms.

"You don't get to decide his fate."

"Neither do you," he replied. "But you can change it."

She looked down.

For the first time, her humor failed her.

"…What would I have to do?"

"Break the bond."

Her head snapped up. "You said breaking the curse destroys everything."

"Not if you break it the right way."

"How?"

He leaned closer.

"By becoming the vessel."

Her breath caught.

"…You mean… let the curse consume me."

"Yes."

Her vision blurred.

"That would kill me."

"Eventually."

She laughed weakly. "Wow. You really know how to sell a deal."

He watched her carefully.

"Kael will live. The world will remain intact. Only you will fall."

Silence.

Her thoughts spiraled.

I barely know him.

He's cold. Dangerous. Broody.

And yet…

She remembered the way he shielded her.

The way he looked at her like she mattered.

The way his voice softened when he said her name.

Her throat tightened.

"…You think I'd sacrifice myself for him?"

"You already are," the figure replied quietly.

"Every time you stay."

Her heart ached.

"…I don't belong here."

"No," he agreed. "But you belong to him."

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

She wiped them angrily. "I hate you."

He smiled.

"Good."

She took a shaky breath.

"…I need time."

"Time is the one thing you don't have."

Suddenly, pain exploded in her chest.

She gasped, dropping to her knees as the Shadow Sigil burned like fire beneath her skin.

The figure stepped back.

"The curse is pulling you."

She cried out.

"Kael…"

Light flared.

Darkness shattered.

Kael felt it the moment she fell.

It was like someone ripped his heart out and set it on fire.

"Luna!" he roared, tearing through the shattered chamber, shadows exploding around him.

Magic surged wildly as he searched, rage and terror colliding inside him.

"Where is she?" he growled.

No answer.

Only the echo of her scream.

He slammed his fist into the stone wall, cracking it.

"If you touch her…" he whispered, voice shaking with fury.

The air trembled.

And then —

Light erupted.

Luna collapsed onto the floor in front of him.

He caught her instantly.

"Luna," he breathed, gripping her face.

"Luna, look at me."

Her eyes fluttered open.

"…Hey," she whispered weakly. "Miss me?"

Relief slammed into him like a tidal wave.

"Don't ever do that again," he said hoarsely.

She managed a faint smile.

"No promises."

He pulled her closer, holding her like she might disappear again.

She closed her eyes, resting against his chest.

"…Kael."

"Yes?"

"…If I had to choose between your life and mine…" she whispered.

He stiffened.

"Don't."

She looked up at him.

"…What would you choose?"

He stared at her — and for the first time, his control shattered.

"I would burn every realm before I let you die," he said.

Her breath caught.

"…That's not comforting."

"It's the truth."

Silence stretched between them.

She swallowed.

"…The shadow figure offered me a deal."

Kael's body went rigid.

"What deal?"

She hesitated.

"…He said he could save you."

Kael's eyes darkened.

"At what cost?"

She didn't answer.

He tightened his grip.

"Luna."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"…My life."

The room fell silent.

Kael's world tilted.

"No," he said immediately. "No."

She looked at him softly.

"…I didn't accept."

He exhaled shakily.

"But he's not done with me," she continued.

"And neither is the curse."

Kael cupped her face.

"I will not let you sacrifice yourself."

She smiled sadly.

"That's what everyone says… until they have to choose."

His jaw tightened.

"There will be no choice."

She leaned into his touch.

"…I hope you're right."

But deep down, she knew —

The curse was already choosing for her.

In the shadows, the figure smiled.

"Run all you want," he whispered. "Fate always collects its due."
