CHAPTER 26
THE JOURNEY THROUGH THE PINE MOUNTAINS ๐ฒ๐๏ธโ๏ธ**
Morning crept slowly across the Pine Mountains of Aetherion, as if the sun itself hesitated to disturb their ancient silence ๐. Pale golden light filtered through towering pine trees whose trunks were thick, twisted, and scarred by centuries of wind and snow. Their needles whispered softly as a cold mountain breeze passed through, carrying the scent of resin, stone, and distant ice ๐ฌ๏ธ๐ฒ.
Erik exhaled slowly, white mist escaping his lips.
"The air's thinner today," he muttered, tightening the strap across his chest.
Arden nodded, adjusting the magical map in his hands ๐โจ. The parchment pulsed faintly, its runes shifting like living veins of light.
"We're climbing higher," Arden replied. "These mountains aren't just oldโฆ they're watching."
Behind them, Rocky moved with steady, thunderous steps ๐ฟ. Each footfall pressed deep into the earth, leaving cracks in stone and soil alike. The wooden structure on his back, part shelter, part cargo hold, swayed slightly but never threatened to fall. He was a walking fortress in a world of cliffs and storms.
"I feel no hostility," Rocky said calmly. "But the mountain resists us."
Erik glanced back at him, half-smiling. "That's the most honest welcome we've had so far."
---
๐ฒ A PATH CARVED BY TIME
The trail narrowed as they advanced. What had once been a trade route was now a fragile ribbon of stone clinging to the mountainside ๐๏ธ. Moss-covered rocks jutted out at odd angles, and ancient prayer flags, faded and torn, fluttered weakly from wooden poles planted by long-dead pilgrims ๐งโโ๏ธ๐.
"These flagsโฆ" Arden said softly. "They're Shan."
Erik stopped walking. "Dragon Realm?"
"Yes," Arden replied. "Travelers once believed the wind carried their prayers to the dragons above the clouds ๐โ๏ธ."
Rocky paused, looking up toward the towering peaks where snow glimmered like silver crowns. "If dragons lived here," he said, "this would be a worthy throne."
The wind howled louder, rushing through the pine forest like a warning ๐ฌ๏ธโ ๏ธ.
---
๐ฆ THE MOUNTAIN RIVER
By midday, the sound of rushing water cut through the silence.
A mountain river burst into view, clear as crystal but violent in its movement ๐โ๏ธ. Melted snow from higher altitudes fed its fury, crashing against jagged stones and sending icy spray into the air.
Erik crouched, dipping his fingers into the current. "Cold enough to numb your bones."
"Perfect," Arden said, already kneeling. "Cold water lasts longer."
They refilled their water skins ๐ง๐ while Rocky stepped directly into the river. The current slammed against his legs, but he did not move. He reached down, lifting several massive stones and stacking them to create a stable crossing โฐ๏ธ๐ชจ.
"You know," Erik said while watching him, "most bridges in this world are weaker than you."
Rocky tilted his head slightly. "I am not offended."
---
๐ฆ GUARDIANS OF THE FOREST
The moment of peace shattered.
A low, echoing call rolled through the trees โ not quite a roar, not quite a horn.
Arden stiffened. "Something's coming."
Figures emerged from between the pines.
Tall. Slender. Half-human, half-stag.
Their bodies were wrapped in bark-like armor, antlers branching high above their heads, eyes glowing with an amber light ๐ฆโจ. Spears tipped with obsidian rested in their hands, but none were raised.
Forest Wardens.
Erik slowly lowered his weapon. "We mean no harm."
One of the creatures stepped forward, its voice deep and resonant, like wind through hollow stone. "You walk the bones of the mountain," it said. "Why?"
Arden stepped beside Erik, raising his staff slightly. Blue runes ignited along its length ๐. "We are wanderers," he answered. "Not conquerors."
The Wardens murmured among themselves.
Then the ground trembled.
Rocky took one step forward.
The Wardens froze.
"Stone Guardianโฆ" one whispered.
Arden lifted the Trident, its runes blazing bright blue ๐ฑ๐. "We fight those who scar this land. Miners. Pillagers. Not its guardians."
Silence followed.
Then, slowly, the Wardens lowered their spears.
"You may pass," their leader said. "But tread lightly. The higher you climbโฆ the less mercy the mountain has."
They vanished as silently as they appeared ๐ฒ๐.
Erik let out a long breath. "I was already missing simple bandits."
---
๐๏ธ ASCENT INTO THE ANCIENT HIGHLANDS
The terrain grew crueler as the day wore on.
Pine trees thinned, replaced by exposed rock faces and frozen soil โ๏ธ๐ชจ. The sky felt closer, heavier. Every breath burned slightly in the lungs.
Arden stumbled.
Erik caught him immediately. "Don't push too hard."
"I won't," Arden replied, though his hands trembled. "But the mapโฆ it's reacting."
The parchment glowed brighter, showing twisting paths and symbols of warning โ ๏ธ๐. "This mountain was never meant to be crossed easily."
Rocky knelt so they could rest against his wooden shelter ๐๏ธ. "Use me," he said simply.
They did.
For a moment, the mountain allowed them peace.
---
๐ฅ CAMP AMONG THE PINES
As dusk arrived ๐, they found refuge beneath an ancient pine whose roots split massive stones like cracked armor.
Rocky gathered wood effortlessly. Erik prepared rations. Arden warmed their food with controlled bursts of magic ๐ฅ๐.
The fire crackled, casting long shadows against stone walls.
"We've crossed a quarter of the mountain," Erik said quietly.
Arden stared into the flames. "And already it's trying to break us."
Rocky stood watch, unmoving. "It has not succeeded."
Above them, stars pierced the thin sky โจ. The Pine Mountains loomed endlessly ahead.
This was not just a journey.
It was a trial.
And the mountain had only begun to ask its questions ๐๏ธ๐๐ฅ.
