Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 25

CHAPTER 25 โ€” EXPLORING THE AETHERION MOUNTAINS ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโš”๏ธ

Morning light slowly spilled through the towering pines at the foothills of the Aetherion Mountains ๐ŸŒ„. Golden rays pierced between branches and jagged stones, illuminating drifting mist that clung stubbornly to the earth, as if the mountain itself was reluctant to reveal its face.

Erik took the first step onto the Shan Trade Route, his boots crunching softly against gravel and dry needles. The path ahead was narrow, uneven, and bordered by ancient stone formations that looked as though giants had once stacked them by hand ๐Ÿชจ๐ŸŒฒ.

"This place doesn't feel like a road," Erik muttered, adjusting the strap of his pack.

"It feels like a test."

Behind him, Arden unfolded the magical map ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโœจ. Its surface shimmered faintly, lines shifting and bending as if alive. Symbols pulsed softly, reacting to the mountain's presence.

"The route is real," Arden said after a moment. "But the mountain doesn't want us to move quickly."

Rocky followed last ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿ’ช, his massive stone frame moving with surprising quiet. Each step left a shallow imprint in the earth. The wooden structure on his back creaked slightly, but remained perfectly balanced.

"I will slow my steps," Rocky said calmly.

"So the mountain does not feel challenged."

Erik snorted softly.

"Good. I'd rather not offend a mountain."

They walked for hours, their pace steady but cautious ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿชจ. Pine trees rose high on both sides, their needles whispering as the wind passed through ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐ŸŒฒ. Occasionally, they passed old stone markers carved with faded runes, remnants of travelers long gone.

By midday, the sound of rushing water reached them ๐ŸŒŠ.

Erik raised a hand.

"Hold. Water source."

They followed the sound and soon found a narrow mountain stream, crystal clear and fast-moving, cutting through dark stone. Sunlight reflected off its surface like shattered glass โœจ๐Ÿ’ง.

Erik knelt and dipped his fingers into the water.

"Cold. Clean. We refill here."

As Erik filled their water skins ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ’ง, Arden crouched near the bank, eyes scanning the vegetation.

"These herbsโ€ฆ" Arden murmured, gently touching a cluster of silver-green leaves ๐ŸŒฟโœจ.

"They grow only at high altitudes. Healing properties. Mildly warming."

"Useful," Erik said.

"Take what you can. Carefully."

Rocky stood guard, eyes glowing faintly as he scanned the treeline ๐Ÿ—ฟ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ.

Thenโ€”

a sound.

A low growl.

Not one.

Several. ๐Ÿบ

Rocky turned first.

"Movement," he warned.

From the shadows between the trees, shapes emerged.

Massive.

Low to the ground.

Eyes glowing crimson. ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ”ฅ

"Blackfang Wolves," Arden whispered, gripping her staff tighter.

"They shouldn't hunt this close to the trade routeโ€ฆ"

Erik stood, slowly drawing the Sword of Soul โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ”ต. Its blade hummed softly, blue light rippling along its edge like flowing water.

"They're not hunting," Erik said coldly.

"They're probing."

The wolves began to circle, paws silent against the forest floor. Their breath steamed in the cool mountain air. Muscles tensed. Jaws parted.

"Rocky," Erik said without looking back.

"Front."

Rocky stepped forward, planting himself between the wolves and his companions ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

"I will not move," he said simply.

The first wolf lunged.

Everything exploded into motion โšก.

Erik met the charge head-on, his sword flashing blue as he deflected snapping jaws and raked claws โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Arden slammed her staff into the ground, chanting sharply.

"Barrier of the High Wind!" ๐ŸŒŒ

A translucent wall shimmered into existence, deflecting a second wolf mid-leap.

Rocky grabbed a charging beast with one hand ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿ’ช, lifted it off the ground, and hurled it into a tree with a thunderous crack ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐ŸŒฒ.

The forest echoed with snarls and steel.

One wolf slipped past, claws raking Erik's arm ๐Ÿ˜–. Blood welled instantly.

"Damn itโ€”!"

Arden reacted instantly, releasing a burst of light that blinded the creature ๐ŸŒŸ. Erik finished it with a clean, decisive strike โš”๏ธ.

Seeing two of their pack broken, the remaining wolves hesitatedโ€ฆ then retreated, melting back into the forest shadows ๐Ÿบ๐ŸŒฒ.

Silence returned.

Only heavy breathing remained.

Erik exhaled sharply, lowering his sword.

"Everyone alive?"

"I am intact," Rocky said.

Arden rushed to Erik's side.

"You're bleeding," she said, already pulling herbs from her pouch ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฉน.

"It's shallow," Erik replied, though his jaw tightened as Arden pressed the herbal paste against the wound. Warmth spread instantly.

"Still," Arden said softly, tying a bandage.

"The mountain welcomes us with teeth."

They rested briefly, tension slowly easing.

As the afternoon wore on, the terrain changed. Trees thinned. The path steepened. Stone replaced soil ๐Ÿ”๏ธ.

Every step burned.

By evening, they reached a narrow ledge overlooking a deep valley. Waterfalls cascaded in the distance, mist rising like smoke from hidden fires ๐Ÿž๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ.

"This is high enough," Erik said.

"We camp here."

Rocky gathered stones and wood, striking flint against rock until sparks caught ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Soon, a fire crackled warmly against the cold mountain air.

They ate quietly ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฅ–, watching stars slowly emerge overhead ๐ŸŒŒโœจ.

Arden broke the silence.

"Do you feel it?"

Erik nodded.

"The mountain is watching."

Rocky stared into the fire.

"It remembers those who fallโ€ฆ and those who endure."

Above them, the Aetherion Mountains loomed silently, ancient and patient ๐Ÿ”๏ธ.

Their journey had only begun.

And the mountain had merely introduced itself.

๐ŸŒ„๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโš”๏ธ
