Chapter 3 - The Fox Among Stray Dogs

"Thanks for your help." Long Tian clasped his hands together as he thanked the young woman, his tone calm and composed.

Around them, the crowd remained silent, none daring to meet his gaze.

She was the only one who stood for him among them.

"From the looks of things, it seems my help wasn't really needed." The young woman chuckled.

Long Tian smiled lightly and said, "My name is Long Tian."

He stretched out his hand.

"Su Wan." She replied, shaking his hand.

When the crowd saw this, they dispersed.

Su Wan looked at the young man before her. Even though he was covered in dust and his clothes were disheveled, she could see the confidence in his eyes.

Her gut told her the man before her was shrouded in a cloud of fog.

She felt curious about him.

Long Tian noticed the curiosity in her eyes and frowned slightly.

He had always been careful with such things.

Interest invited attachment, and attachment invited trouble.

Unnecessary bonds were liabilities.

"Where are you going?" Su Wan asked.

"To my wife's house." He flashed her a smile.

"Oh…"

"Yeah. I should get going before my wife gets angry."

He turned, waving casually. "Thanks again for your help."

Long Tian wore the expression of a contented husband as he walked away.

"Wait, take this if you need my help." She stopped Long Tian and handed him her business card.

Long Tian nodded, putting it in the small bag he carried.

As he walked, he noticed something strange. Someone was watching him.

He saw a tattooed young man concealing himself in the shadows.

Long Tian held his chin, thinking of who he had offended. The only thing that came to mind was Scar.

He frowned, feeling their target wasn't him.

He looked back to see Su Wan walking away.

He moved among the crowd until he felt the gaze on him had disappeared.

When he felt this, he turned back and followed the tattooed young man.

Su Wan was walking, thinking of Long Tian. Those frightening eyes looked like those of a devil.

She suddenly bumped into someone by mistake.

"I'm sorry—" she said hurriedly.

When she looked up, her expression stiffened.

"Haha… you thought you could walk away after interfering in my business?" Scar stood before her, a grin stretched across his face. His cold eyes locked onto hers.

Su Wan instinctively took a step back, glancing around—only to realize she had already been surrounded.

There was no escape.

Fear surged within her, but she forced herself to stand her ground, her lips curling in mockery.

"Humph. Picking on a weak girl like me… how shameless." She snorted. "Why don't you go after that man instead?"

Scar's smile faded, his expression turning ugly.

"Let's see how much your family is willing to pay to get you back."

He leaned closer, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper.

"And I wonder how long you'll keep that pride when I put you under me."

Panic surged through her heart. She turned and tried to run.

But she was a mouse among cats.

Scar's men caught her instantly, forcing her to her knees.

Scar lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.

"I wonder how much your family would spend to redeem you."

His lips curled into a slow, cruel smirk.

He was targeting Long Tian, but the man's strength and aura made him feel uneasy. From Su Wan's behavior, he guessed she was from a wealthy background. The confidence she exuded when she faced him was innate.

Su Wan kept her silence. She knew she mustn't reveal her background, or this group of men would demand an exorbitant sum of money.

She doesn't know why, hoping that Long Tian, whom she met not long ago, would come and save her.

What an absurd thought.

She sighed inwardly.

Then, unexpectedly, she spat at Scar's feet.

"Wait for his revenge."

Scar froze for a moment—then burst into laughter.

"Hahaha! You're expecting someone you met a few minutes ago to save you?" He sneered. "Even if he comes, I will make him regret ever crossing me."

"Oh, really?"

Scar's body stiffened, and Su Wan was surprised. Scar's men immediately took a defensive stance.

They all turned toward a spot as Long Tian stepped out of the shadows.

Scar's men charged at Long Tian, intent on beating him ruthlessly.

Long Tian's expression remained unchanged.

"I wonder how many of my strengths you can handle," he chuckled.

If he had been a fox watching from the shadows before, he was now a predator stepping into the open.

Fear spread through Scar's men. For a brief moment, they hesitated.

"Kill him!" Scar roared. "Anyone who does will be rewarded with one million!"

Greed clouded their judgment, blinding them to the danger before them.

One man lunged, throwing a punch.

Long Tian raised his hand.

Crack!

The attacker's arm twisted unnaturally in his grasp.

The entire street fell silent.

It was the cry of pain of the first attacker that broke the silence.

Everyone was dumbfounded by this scene.

Scar coughed. He felt fear. Who the hell is this young man?

Su Wan saw this scene; her eyes glowed with joy and delight.

To Scar and his men, Long Tian was a devil.

To her, he was an angel who came to save her.

When Long Tian saw Scar's men not daring to move, he took the initiative, charging forward like a wolf in the midst of the sheep.

One punch.

Another man fell, writhing in agony.

This struck terror into their hearts as they all ran for their lives.

The entire fight lasted less than a minute.

Long Tian didn't bother to chase them; he turned to where Scar had been standing, only to find him gone.

His lip curled up into an amused smirk.

"This cat-and-mouse game is really going to be fun." He murmured.

A/N: Well, it seems you've been hooked by the bait. Hmm… I'm quite the fisherman—and the cook.
