Chapter 55 - Chapter 55

The post dawn cycle over the Outer Rim sector did not offer Kaelen any time to rest. Before the blood of the defeated Star Wolves could finish cooling on the durasteel ledge, the automated system terminal mounted along the primary colosseum wall began its next rotation sequence. The massive holographic display board flickered through grey static before fresh amber warning indicators appeared across its surface. Their red glow spread over the three hundred meter circular arena and reflected against the black walls surrounding the combat floor.

WARNING. COMBAT WAVE TWO INITIALIZED. ASSET LOG ACTIVE.

The roar of fifty thousand spectators changed instantly. The chaotic voices of half beast merchants and corrupt Imperial gentry rose into one deafening wave that shook the metal barriers around the arena. They leaned over the safety grates of their luxury booths, their faces hidden behind porcelain masks that protected their identities, and threw copper spectra tokens into the betting channels below. To these wealthy collectors from the capital world, the youngest General of the Fifth Army was no longer a military officer. He was an SS rank biological asset being pushed through an intentional war of attrition for their entertainment.

"Look at him!" a wealthy scrap broker shouted from the first tier betting platform. "His SS rank muscle plating is already weakening at the shoulder! He is using a rusted piece of durasteel just to keep his balance! Twenty thousand points says his marrow fails before the next bell!"

"He belongs in the siphoning lines!" another voice shouted through the public address system. "Your father was a traitor who left the frontier mines exposed, Kaelen! Let's see how much strength your ancestors left in your body when the claws reach your ribs!"

Kaelen did not turn toward the luxury booths. His gray eyes remained fixed on the reinforced release gate across the arena. He stood near the center of the circular combat floor, his tall powerful frame wrapped tightly in the coarse grey canvas waist wrap. His left upper arm was almost completely numb beneath the synth canvas patch Jaren had applied. The cell regeneration pack was operating close to its safety limit, and a slow leak of dark blood moved down toward his hand.

Along his right ribs, the dark branching veins of the curse wound pulsed beneath his skin. A cold static sensation traveled toward his collarbone whenever he drew a deeper breath. His physical endurance was falling, but his internal baseline remained steady at forty two beats per minute. His tactical mind continued to process every movement inside the arena, stripping away the noise and searching for the most efficient path to survival.

Clang.

The western release gate opened.

A heavy hydraulic groan rolled through the arena as reinforced doors separated and exposed the dark tunnel behind them. A wave of hot air and chemical smoke moved across the combat floor.

Something large moved inside the tunnel.

The spectators began shouting again.

A massive Star Bear stepped into the arena.

It stood nearly four meters tall when fully upright, its broad shoulders covered with overlapping plates of natural ironwood that had been chemically hardened and reinforced with thin metal supports. Several sections of its body had been fitted with crude artificial armor. Chrome fasteners held the plates against its shoulders, chest, and forelegs.

A thick violet fluid leaked from several injection points along its neck and shoulders. The colosseum had filled its body with chemical stimulants and neural drugs to increase its aggression. Its eyes were wide and unfocused, the pupils reduced to narrow vertical lines by the high frequency acoustic signals being transmitted through the arena.

The beast had been kept without food for three cycles in the lower processing cages. Green chemical foam gathered around its mouth as it opened its massive jaws. Its claws scraped against the durasteel floor as it stepped forward.

Each front paw carried five long claws reinforced with chrome tips. They were designed to tear through the protective seals of military armor.

The Star Bear lowered its head.

Its eyes locked onto Kaelen.

Then it charged.

"Mass: approximately four tons," Kaelen said quietly.

His fingers tightened around the rusted durasteel strut taken from the Star Wolf carcass.

"Velocity: thirty five miles per hour. Deceleration cycle: zero point eight seconds. The ledge limits lateral movement."

The Star Bear accelerated across the arena.

Unlike the Star Wolves, it did not use a coordinated attack pattern. It relied on overwhelming mass and direct force. Every step shook the durasteel floor. Its claws struck the surface hard enough to leave deep marks.

Kaelen watched its movement.

The arena was large, but the safe combat area was not.

The circular floor narrowed toward the damaged eastern sector, where sections of the main platform had already been destroyed during the first wave. Beyond the remaining combat surface was the deep central trench. The acid inside it had not yet been released for the next challenge, but the trench itself remained several meters below the ledge.

Kaelen could not afford to retreat blindly.

If he moved too far toward the inner edge, one mistake would send him into the trench.

If he moved too far toward the outer wall, the Star Bear could pin him against the durasteel barrier.

The beast was already close.

Kaelen lowered his center of gravity.

The Star Bear opened its jaws and swung its right claw toward his chest.

At the last possible moment, Kaelen dropped to the floor and rolled beneath the creature's body.

The massive claw passed above him.

The Star Bear's front limbs struck the floor with enough force to shake the ledge.

Kaelen came up beside its left foreleg.

He immediately saw the weakness.

The artificial reinforcement around the beast's left limb had been damaged during its movement through the gate. A thin section of natural armor had separated from the metal support, exposing the joint beneath it.

Kaelen drove the rusted durasteel strut into the opening.

CRUNCH.

The metal struck the exposed joint.

The Star Bear roared.

It tried to pull its leg backward, but Kaelen did not try to overpower the creature. He simply used the strut to interfere with the damaged joint while the beast's own forward momentum continued carrying its massive body ahead.

The Star Bear's left foreleg buckled.

Its balance disappeared.

The four ton body twisted violently as the rear legs continued moving forward while the damaged front limb could no longer support its weight.

Kaelen released the strut and moved away.

The Star Bear crashed onto its side.

Its shoulder struck the durasteel floor first. Its body continued sliding forward until its reinforced chest slammed against the damaged section of the arena wall.

CRASH.

The impact shook the entire structure.

One of the artificial armor plates broke loose from its shoulder and spun across the floor. The beast attempted to rise, but its damaged foreleg collapsed beneath it.

Kaelen remained several meters away.

He did not approach immediately.

The Star Bear dragged itself forward with its remaining limbs and tried to attack again. Its claws scraped against the floor as it forced its body upright.

Kaelen watched its breathing.

Its movement was slower now.

Its left foreleg was useless.

The stimulant system continued forcing the creature to fight even though its body could no longer maintain the required balance.

Kaelen stepped forward.

The Star Bear swung its right claw.

Kaelen moved inside the attack.

He caught the reinforced wrist with his right hand and redirected the limb toward the damaged wall. He used the creature's own movement instead of trying to stop it.

The Star Bear's claw struck the wall.

CRACK.

The reinforced chrome tips broke against the durasteel surface.

The beast roared and tried to pull away.

Kaelen drove his shoulder into the creature's chest and pushed once.

The Star Bear lost its balance again.

Its damaged left side gave way.

The massive body crashed onto the floor.

Kaelen immediately stepped back.

The Star Bear struggled for several seconds.

Then its body became still.

A heavy stream of dark metallic blood spread across the grey surface beneath its head.

The digital registry above the arena flickered.

COMBAT WAVE TWO: CLEARED.

The crowd became silent.

For several seconds, no one in the luxury booths moved.

They had expected the Star Bear to crush Kaelen against the floor.

Instead, the beast had destroyed itself through its own momentum.

Kaelen slowly straightened.

His body was covered with grey dust and dark blood. The left sleeve of his temporary medical wrap had torn open again, and fresh blood ran from the damaged upper arm. His right ribs burned beneath the curse wound, but his heart rate remained at forty two beats per minute.

He looked toward the luxury booths.

The porcelain masks stared back at him.

Kaelen rested the rusted durasteel strut against his leg.

He had not defeated the Star Bear through greater strength.

He had used its weight, its speed, its damaged reinforcement, and the limited space of the arena against it.

That was enough.

A low mechanical sound came from beneath the combat floor.

Kaelen's eyes shifted toward the central trench.

The arena system was beginning its next rotation.

The spectators slowly realized what was happening.

The third gate was preparing to open.

Kaelen tightened his grip around the rusted strut.

The next wave would not be another beast.

The colosseum was preparing something much worse.
