The fourth rotation of the Great Colosseum's combat floor began with a massive grinding sound as the primary sub level hydraulic systems slowed and engaged. The concrete sand, heavily covered with the thick black green blood of the Star Bear and the damaged steel scales of the Star Wolf vanguard, did not simply cycle its floor panels to clear the remains. The central two hundred meter section of the combat floor split completely apart along its center line, the massive durasteel plates groaning under the heavy downward force as they pulled back into the dark bedrock below.
From the center of the clearing, a dense, bubbling lake of unrefined Zerg digestive acid rose through the lower drainage grills, filling the newly formed basin with boiling translucent green fluid that hissed as it ate into the stone foundations. The vapor rising from the trench was far denser than the normal surface air, carrying a heavy smell of sulfur, crushed ozone, and concentrated biological rot that turned the entire colosseum into a toxic zone. The liquid acid was a weapon of pure chemical destruction. It dissolved broken weapons, iron reinforcement struts, and discarded steel plated carcasses into thick foaming grey silt within seconds, sending columns of white hot steam upward toward the luxury center booths.
The arena floor was reduced to a narrow three meter durasteel ledge that ran in a continuous circle along the inner perimeter of the colosseum's massive non reflective black durasteel wall. There was no longer enough open space for standard tactical movements, no deep sand to absorb an impact, and no buffer zone to slow an attack. The remaining floor was an iron ribbon suspended directly above a lake of melting acid, its surface slick with grease from the previous waves and its outer edge completely exposed without any safety rails.
"WARNING. PERIMETER REDUCTION ACTIVE," the system terminal's mechanical voice boomed through the public address horns, breaking through a sheet of grey static that had blanked out the betting boards. "ASSET REGISTRY THIRTY SIX: THE FALLEN GENERAL. SECTOR COMPLIANCE CYCLE IS LIVE."
The roaring fury of the fifty thousand spectators inside the steel seating tiers reached a new level of selfishness and mockery. Wealthy Imperial nobles and corrupt gentry members leaned over the safety grates of their luxury booths, their faces hidden behind elaborate porcelain masks. They threw heavy spectra tokens onto the tracks to trigger the secondary environmental hazards. They laughed loudly as their voices echoed across the concrete walls while they watched the lone gladiator trap himself against the iron wall. To these capital collectors, Kaelen's SS rank muscle plating was not a symbol of military legacy. He was simply valuable biological material running on a final safety margin, another entry in a ledger that would soon be balanced by the green teeth of the trench.
"Look at his left arm!" a scrap broker shrieked from the first tier betting platform, pointing his wrench down through the white steam. "The synth canvas patch Jaren applied has completely buckled under the pressure from the lower levels! The kinetic wound is leaking dark fluid straight into the acid line! Ten thousand points says he loses his balance before the mid shift bell!"
"He's a disgraced butcher whose ancestors left the frontier mines open!" a second voice screamed through the communication grid. "Let's see how your Fifth Army tactical training helps when the bio spores hit your lungs, Kaelen! Jump into the green, traitor! Save the Prince the trouble of closing your file!"
Kaelen did not waste a single breath answering the crowd. He stood flat against the non reflective black durasteel paneling of the colosseum wall, his tall, powerful frame wrapped tightly in nothing but the coarse grey canvas waist wrap. His left eye was wide, clear, and focused completely on the upper rigging ropes that stretched across the ceiling beams three levels above. His left upper arm was entirely numb, the muscle fibers scorched by Prince Lysander's hangar ambush projectile, and the white canvas wrap was soaked with a fresh, slow leak of blood that ran down his arm.
Along his right ribs, the dark branching obsidian veins of the curse wound pulsed with sudden static heat. The temporary chemical treatment Jaren had given him was weakening under the intense physical strain of the previous waves, allowing the cold static effect of the airborne drug to move toward his neck. His physical endurance was a dwindling calculation, his body fractured and running close to its limit, but his heart rate remained locked at forty two beats per minute. His tactical mind ignored the screaming crowd and the toxic heat of the vapor as he focused on the exact points of friction and movement within the sector.
Hiss.
The large hydraulic release valves along the upper structural arches of the ceiling split open with a mechanical screech of tearing iron.
A swarm of twenty low tier Zerg drones dropped from the dark recesses of the upper utility shafts, descending through the white steam clouds along thick non reflective wire ropes. They did not resemble the standard frontline scouts Kaelen had purged during the frontier campaigns. Their grey multi legged carapaces had been reinforced with overlapping plates of siphoned star beast hide, while crude chrome rivets held their joints together and leaked thick violet fluid into the acid vapor. Their vertical pupils glowed bright emerald under the neural signals from the colosseum's acoustic beacons, and their jaws hung open from chemical stimulants that sent green foam dripping down their iron plated limbs.
The drones did not form a coordinated hunting formation. They moved with a simple instinct to harvest living tissue, their primary claws snapping as they landed along the narrow three meter durasteel ledge. Their heavy bodies made the iron ribbon vibrate above the bubbling lake of acid, their claws cutting deep jagged marks into the durasteel as they locked onto Kaelen's position.
"Velocity: twenty five," Kaelen said through his locked teeth, his voice flat as he watched the lead drone descend. "Deceleration cycle: zero point three seconds before impact. The ledge is only three meters wide. Vertical movement is the only open path."
He did not have an Imperial short blade or a high frequency lance to absorb the incoming attack. His right hand closed into a tight fist around the handle of the rusted durasteel strut he had taken from the Star Bear carcass. The metal was cold and covered with pitted industrial grease.
As the lead Zerg drone launched itself directly toward his exposed chest, its primary claws cutting through the air with a high pitched hum, Kaelen did not lower his body to absorb the attack. He timed the exact moment of the creature's acceleration, jumped straight upward from the durasteel ledge, and used the protruding iron rivets of the colosseum's black wall panels as handholds. His SS rank muscle memory handled the vertical climb with smooth mechanical control. His bare feet pushed against the wall and lifted his entire body two meters into the air, completely clearing the drone's attack path.
The Zerg drone could not stop its momentum within the narrow three meter lane. It passed directly beneath Kaelen's hanging body, its claws scraping wildly over the grease covered durasteel before its front limbs reached the edge of the ledge.
Splash.
The monster plunged directly into the deep circular trench of boiling green acid below. A massive eruption of white hot chemical steam tore through the lower basin as the Zerg's bio mechanical carapace began to dissolve under the acid. The creature released a high bubbling shriek as its vertical pupils rolled backward and its grey flesh turned into a foul cloud of boiling grey silt that was pulled into the drainage filters within three seconds.
Kaelen did not watch it dissolve. While hanging from the iron rivets of the wall paneling, his right hand snapped downward with brutal force. He caught the primary leg joint of another Zerg drone that was trying to climb the wall toward him. His fingers tightened around the joint as he twisted the chrome rivets until the shell cracked open with a loud crunch.
He did not pull the creature upward. He used its falling weight as a weapon, swinging its heavy dripping body directly into the central eye cluster of another attacker approaching from the right side of the ledge. The two alien creatures immediately lost their balance, their limbs becoming tangled as they fell backward from the narrow durasteel ribbon and dropped into the hissing green trench below.
"Perimeter reduction: ninety seconds remaining," Kaelen muttered, his gray eyes tracking the remaining seventeen drones crowding the western section of the ledge. Their needle like projectiles hissed through the air as they struck the metal wall, sending a shower of hot fragments across his body. His left arm was bleeding heavily now, the synth canvas bandages almost completely shredded by the force of the projectiles, but his balance remained steady. He would hold the vertical line, his fingers locked into the rivets while his tactical mind counted down the seconds until the current loop ended and the central platform reset in the darkness.
The crossfire within the third wave had reached its critical point. Kaelen remained hanging from the black durasteel wall of the colosseum, his SS rank body a silhouette of absolute resistance against the flashing red emergency indicators. Below his feet, the lake of green acid continued to boil and hiss, a constant reminder that his country had traded his legacy for a luxury spectacle. Yet his gray eyes remained wide, clear, and fixed on the porcelain masks of the gentry. He refused to let their trap close around him until the final variable was cleared.
The public address horns along the colosseum wall suddenly began to glitch as the high frequency data loop from the lower cells mirrored its signal into the primary distribution bus. The red emergency warning lights flickered twice before dying out completely, plunging the upper luxury boxes into temporary darkness and disrupting the nobles' betting slates. Kaelen leaned his uninjured shoulder against the durasteel paneling, his breath a shallow rasp as the asset countdown timer reached zero point three seconds.
The last of the acid continued to boil beneath the narrow ledge while the remaining drones hesitated in the sudden darkness. Kaelen slowly tightened his grip around the rusted durasteel strut and looked toward the sealed gate at the far end of the arena.
The third wave was over.
But the Great Colosseum was not finished with him yet.
