The transition from the lower staging labs to the vast open arena of the Great Colosseum happened with a sudden release of hydraulic pressure. Kaelen felt the lift tracking panel lock into the upper frame with a heavy metallic crunch that traveled through his bare heels and into his spine.
Instantly, the thick, hot smell of stagnant drainage sludge and old sulfur disappeared, replaced by the freezing, high speed winds of the Outer Rim plains. The bright artificial sun arrays hit his bloodshot left eye like a physical blow. For a fraction of a second, his vision was nothing but broken white static and bright glare, but his veteran SSS rank muscle memory did not fail him. He lowered his center of gravity by three inches, his weight settling perfectly over the grit covered concrete as his body adjusted to the huge arena floor.
The arena deck was vast, a circular expanse of gray concrete spanning three hundred meters, with a five meter deep trench around the outer edge filled with bubbling emerald Zerg digestive acid that hissed against the lower walls. Beyond the acid line, towering steel spectator stands rose in wide circles toward the indigo sky. Fifty thousand voices crashed down onto the arena like a powerful shockwave, a chaotic and terrifying roar from half beast merchants, corrupt Imperial gentry hidden behind porcelain masks, and wealthy alien collectors who threw copper spectra tokens onto the safety grates to buy better views of the slaughter.
"SSS asset registry: The Fallen General!" the announcer's mechanical voice boomed through the speakers, its frequency rattling the loose rivets in the colosseum walls. "Tonight, he clears the arena against the Star Wolf vanguard! The ledger opens on the concrete floor!"
Three hundred meters across the arena, the heavy iron plates of the main release gates split open with a long hydraulic screech.
Three low tier Star Wolves came out of the darkness of the inner pens, their feet throwing up clouds of gray dust as they locked onto Kaelen's position. They did not resemble the natural predators of the frontier sectors. Their massive two meter bodies had been brutally fitted with overlapping plates of rusted steel, while crude chrome rivets held their skulls together and leaked an iridescent violet fluid into the dust. Their blind, milky eyes were bloodshot from the arena's high frequency sound signals, while chemical stimulants had forced their jaws wide and sent thick green foam dripping down their iron plated chests.
Kaelen did not have an Imperial short blade, a high frequency lance, or a tactical command shield to absorb the incoming force. His left upper arm remained five percent weaker because of Prince Lysander's kinetic wound from the hangar attack, and the synth canvas bandages were damp with a slow leak of blood that had soaked into his gray canvas waist wrap. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass, while the remaining effects of the neural block syringe caused a dull, freezing ache along his right ribs where the dark veins of the curse wound remained exposed to the cold wind.
He stood completely alone on the concrete floor, his gray eyes clear, focused, and without warmth. He did not look at the roaring crowd. He did not look at the blood stained walls like a frightened prisoner. His tactical mind immediately began calculating the movements of the incoming pack.
The wolves moved in a standard three point hunting formation. The lead beast sprinted down the center at forty miles per hour, while the other two moved thirty degrees to the left and right, their steel claws cutting deep lines into the concrete as they tried to trap him against the acid trench. It was a common frontier hunting formation, one Kaelen had seen countless times during his campaigns with the Fifth Army.
"Velocity: forty two," Kaelen muttered through his clenched teeth. His words were short, and his breathing remained steady at his normal rate of forty two beats per minute as he finished calculating the point of impact. "Deceleration phase: zero point four seconds before impact."
The lead Star Wolf closed the distance in a fraction of a second, its iron riveted jaws opening with a deep, wet roar as it launched itself straight at Kaelen's exposed chest wrap. The force created by the beast's mass pushed through the air, throwing up a cloud of gray dust that completely blocked Kaelen's lower view.
Kaelen did not take a defensive stance. He did not lower his shoulders to absorb the attack. At the exact moment before the wolf's steel snout could reach his skin, he made a quick, low sidestep to the right. The movement was small and carefully measured, leaving only a few inches between him and the attack. The sharp edge of the wolf's shoulder armor brushed against his canvas wrap without disturbing his balance.
As the beast's momentum carried its heavy body past him, Kaelen's right hand dropped into the grit. His fingers closed around a heavy, jagged piece of durasteel reinforcement, a two foot section of rusted metal that had been torn from a broken support pillar during an earlier clearance wave.
With a short turn of his hips, Kaelen used the wolf's own momentum against it. He drove the jagged metal upward beneath the beast's steel collar armor, tearing through the soft tissue of its lower throat before breaking the central neural node behind its ear with a sharp crunch.
The Star Wolf stiffened instantly. Its body stopped responding as the damage to its neural system cut off its movements. Dark metallic blood burst from the wound, covering Kaelen's forearms and chest with a hot, foul spray.
Kaelen did not stop to confirm the kill. Before the dead beast could hit the concrete, he pushed forward with his boots and used his uninjured right shoulder to send the heavy steel plated body directly into the path of the two wolves coming from the left.
The two remaining wolves tried to change direction, their claws sliding across the blood covered concrete, but their chemically driven frenzy was too strong. They crashed into the falling body of their leader, their metal armor scraping together and throwing sparks across the arena floor. The natural aggression of the Star Wolves, made even stronger by the chemicals in their bodies, completely overrode their focus on the human fighter. They turned on each other, their jaws biting through their own steel plates with violent force as their roars of pain echoed across the arena.
Kaelen stepped back from the mass of claws and steel, his breathing shallow and controlled as he stayed near the inner gate tracks. His left arm trembled from the weight of the durasteel strut, and his canvas bandages were stained deep red, but his gray eyes remained fixed on the upper luxury boxes where the corrupt gentry watched from behind glass partitions.
The first wave of the Iron Circuit was cleared. His name was still active on the digital registry boards, and thirty cycles of military experience remained locked inside his weakened body. He did not wait for the crowd to stop laughing. He wiped the beast blood from his chin with the back of his hand and rested his shoulder against the central pillar, waiting for the secondary gate to open in the darkness.
