POV: Julian Cross
Victor called at 11 PM with a security update that wasn't an update.
"We've got movement in DeVos's network," Victor said. "Three different operatives checking on you. Not aggressive. Just... inquiries. Who you associate with. Where you spend time. What security you employ."
Julian understood what this meant. He was no longer an abstract suspect in an investigation. He was now a documented person of interest with a price attached.
"They know," Julian said.
"They know someone's investigating them," Victor said. "They don't know the extent or the specifics. But DeVos's intelligence network is comprehensive. Every question you asked about his operations filtered back. Every contact you made with Marcus Webb's fixer connections echoed through the network. It took weeks, but they connected the dots."
Julian moved to his office window and looked down at the city. The penthouse suddenly felt exposed despite being thirty stories up.
