POV: Iris Hartwell
The penthouse had changed in the days she'd been away.
Iris noticed it first in the lobby, additional cameras, positioned at angles that covered exits. Then at the elevator, a keycard reader she hadn't seen before. Then at the penthouse entrance, reinforced lock mechanism, pressure sensors she didn't recognize.
She dropped her suitcase inside the door and began a systematic examination of the space.
New cameras positioned in corners. Windows with what looked like reinforced treatment. Emergency exits marked with subtle indicators. The office door, Julian's office door, now had a deadbolt that required manual key rather than electronic access.
This wasn't precaution. This was preparation for siege.
She found Julian in his office, working at his desk. He looked up when she entered but didn't stand.
"You've upgraded security," she said. Not a question.
"Yes."
"Significantly."
"Yes."
Iris sat across from him without invitation. "Why?"
