I completed the final sutures on Heather's wounds while Karl gathered information from both sisters about which pack members deserved rescue from their former territory. When the discussion ended, Heather provided him with names, though the list remained disappointingly brief.
"There are she-wolves they've captured from raids on neighboring packs. Many were coerced into mate bonds against their will. These women won't mourn the deaths of their so-called mates, but losing that forced protection will leave them vulnerable," Heather explained.
"Why didn't you intervene on their behalf?" The question escaped before I could soften it. I hadn't intended to sound accusatory, but Heather possessed obvious strength and combat skills. She could have defended those women.
