Chapter 2 - Regret

The temperature at the Clay Corporation was very high. Austin Dre, the discarded live-in son-in-law, had just been thrown out of the building without a penny. The CEO of the company, Sonya Clay, asked for a restraining order, and different court orders to ensure the poor would not only stay away from her in the future but also walk out of the company penniless and suffer away from her.

This news spread around the city limits key wildfire. Different famous news channels had been deliberately positioned at the entrance of the company to capture this scene.

As soon as Austin Dre had stumbled out of the exit gate of the Clay Corporation, they pounced on him like flies and asked every kind of question.

"How do you feel now that you have no one to back you up?" one asked.

"Do you really like depending on women so much that you can't live on yourself?"

"How was it sharing the same bed with the number one goddess of Quezon City?"

"What are your plans after this? Do you have your next target?"

The reporters were clearly mocking him. However, he didn't flinch, he neither felt grief nor sorrow. This was truly an eye-opener.

At that time, four burly men squeezed through the crowd and blocked him from the camera. The reporters were stunned for a moment before coming back to reality. A dark voice said, "If you wish to keep working here in Quezon City, get away from here." The voice sent shock waves to the reporters. They slowly cleared a passage for the men. No one knew if their words were true or not, but it was always better to be safe than sorry.

The men were the Dre family guards who had been following Austin Dre. Her mother had been worried about her son so she had asked them to follow him secretly.

When he entered the Clay Corporation building, they figured they would just wait for him to come out. However, the wait had taken more than two hours. They had begun feeling nervous, and almost decided to break into the building, but then their young master appeared. Seeing him being assaulted by the reporters, their blood boiled so they came in front and threatened the reporters, who soon made way for them to walk away.

Sonya Jacobs Clay was standing at the floor where Austin Dre had been a few minutes before.

She wanted to watch the show, but when she saw those black-clothed men take him away, her heart beat louder. She watched wide-eyed as the men escorted him to a luxury Rolce Roy's car and opened the door for him respectfully. He then turned, looked up at the building with a grin and then got into the car before it drove away.

That grin, that unusual grin, wasn't surely from someone who had been defeated and humiliated.

Had she misjudged him? Who were those men and that fancy car? Not everyone could afford that kind of car. She had tried discerning the plate number, but from her height she could see clearly.

She truly felt that something was clearly wrong. If, after experiencing all that humiliation, a guy could just smile and walk away like that, without even struggling or threatening to do anything to the other person, there was truly something she had missed.

And it wasn't just something small; From her sixth sense, she knew that it was something enormous.

She felt like rushing after him, but after thinking of how she had treated him in the last days, she couldn't get herself to do it.

Her personal secretary, who had witnessed the scene too, noticed her employers' change in demeanor. She said,

"That can't be right, right?"

The other party didn't say a word; she looked worn off.

"This doesn't feel right," Sonya finally yelled.

"He can't be someone important, could he? Could he?" the secretary asked.

"How would I know," Sonya answered.

"What did we do then?" the secretary asked nervously.

"How would I know, but this, this is not right, if only I could speak with him for one last time," she lamented as her eyes became wet with tears.

She recalled that after Austin Dre had taken the documents, she recalled his indifferent but deeply hurting facial expression. The way his face contorted in anger and pain. The way he tore the orders in the conference room. The way he threw the pieces into the air. The way out of blind anger, she had walked and slapped him hard in the face. The way, he just grinned and grabbed his reddened cheek. The way everyone had mocked him with laughter after that. The way, he didn't say anything after that but turned and left the room.

The way she had ordered him to stop. Then she pulled him to her office. The way he stood there like a dead corpse and listened to her nonsense rubbish as she warned him to stay away from her.

The way he just nodded and looked paler than ever. His final words, "I will never cross your way, not in this lifetime anyway,"

And finally, how she ordered her guards to throw him out of the building. His last glance, a mocking grin which seemed to say, "Hope you won't regret this"

It was only a few minutes, and she was already feeling the regret build up inside.

What was really going on: She was conflicted.

"Miss Sonya, why are you so worried he is just a nobody? Maybe those were just some gang members he offended in the streets, so they came to collect him," she offered her opinion.

However, her boss's tonal response was indifferent. She said, "Maybe but..."

"No boss, you can't be thinking that that car belonged to that beggar?" She asked in disbelief.

"Don't call him that," she yelled.

The secretary, Betty, was taken aback. She asked in a low voice, "Boss, are you still...?"

Sonya didn't answer, she just moved away from the window and sat in her chair.

"Go and figure out the origin of that car," she ordered. Betty nodded and then left the room. Her face was contorted with both shock and disbelief.

How could her boss still have feelings for that bastard?

She wondered.

In the room, Sonya sat there. I thought deeply.

A phone call broke her thoughts. When she saw the caller, her face lit up.

"Hi baby," a male voice sounded

"Hi Jayden,"

It was Jaden Brii, the heir of the Brii family and the spouse of the Quezon City's top beauty, Sonya Jacobs Clay.

"Are free?" He asked.

"Well, I am just in the company," she said.

"You don't sound very happy? "Did someone offend you?" he asked.

She thought for a while and then answered, "It's nothing, I just came back from cleaning up the company's moles."

There was a pause from the other side before he asked,

"was it that good for nothing ex-boyfriend of yours?" She hesitated and he added.

"That brat, I will destroy him if he doesn't leave you alone in the future,"

"Thank you, Jayden, but I think you have to be careful. "He might not be a normal person like we initially thought," she added.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I just saw him get into a Rolls-Royce after chasing him out of the company. He must have kept something from me all those years."

"What?" There was a heightened time from the other line. "Well, we just need to be thorough next time," she added.

"Well, don't worry, I know someone who can dig up every information about that punk in a few hours, just await my call," he said and hung up.

Sonya slowly lowered the phone from her ear. She was still staring blankly into the distance.

"Boss, the car is ready," a voice from the back said, which woke her up from her daze.

She turned and, with a last look, grabbed her coat and walked to the door.
