I saw Lorelei throwing all the blame at Serena, clearly worried that Romano might hold a grudge against her. I rushed to explain, "She's your little sister, Romano. You can't act like that toward her."
Romano's head seemed full of the moment when I'd pulled Serena behind me, combined with Lorelei's words—that my anger toward him was all because of this little sister.
I watched Romano stay quiet and felt my brow crease with concern.
Serena picked up on the situation and figured out that the boy standing there had to be my child. She slowly emerged from behind me and extended her hand to Romano.
"Hi, I'm Serena Zach. What's your name?" Serena's poised, confident manner made me breathe a little easier.
But when I turned back to Romano, he didn't just refuse to take her hand—he shot Serena a hostile look.
I was about to call Romano out for his rudeness, but then I caught myself and told Serena, "If he doesn't want to shake hands, don't worry about it."
