Chapter 75 - chapter 76 phone buzzing

The house felt different that morning.

Not just calmer—but alive.

Cynthia sat on the edge of the couch, legs tucked beneath her, a mug of coffee warming her hands. Sunlight streamed through the wide windows, illuminating the space in soft gold. Somewhere in the background, quiet music played—something instrumental, slow and comforting.

Alexander emerged from the hallway, sleeves rolled up again, hair slightly undone in a way that made him look less like a powerful executive and more like… just a man at home.

"Do you always play music this early?" Cynthia asked, smiling.

"Only on days I don't want to think," he replied.

She laughed softly. "I like this version of you."

He paused. "This version doesn't come out often."

"Well," she said lightly, "I'll consider myself lucky."

They spent the morning doing small, ordinary things that somehow felt extraordinary.

Alexander showed her the house properly this time—the study filled with books he claimed he hadn't read, the balcony where he drank coffee when insomnia hit, the kitchen where he admitted he mostly burned toast.

Cynthia teased him relentlessly.

"You're telling me you run an entire company but can't cook?"

"I delegate," he said calmly.

She shook her head, laughing. "Unbelievable."

At one point, she found an old photo frame tucked away on a shelf.

"Is this you?" she asked, holding it up.

Alexander glanced over, surprised. "That was… a long time ago."

He looked younger in the photo. Softer. Less guarded.

"You look happy," she said.

"I was," he replied honestly. Then, after a pause, "I think I might be again."

Her heart skipped.

Later, they sat on the floor, backs against the couch, sharing pastries Alexander had ordered earlier. Crumbs littered the coffee table, and Cynthia wiped chocolate from her fingers with a napkin.

"This is nice," she said quietly.

He nodded. "It is."

His phone buzzed on the counter.

Alexander glanced at it automatically.

Unknown Number.

His expression shifted—just slightly.

Cynthia noticed. "Everything okay?"

"Yes," he said quickly, flipping the phone face-down. "Just spam."

She studied him but didn't push.

They returned to their conversation laughing, teasing, enjoying the rare simplicity of the moment.

The phone buzzed again.

Alexander ignored it.

Then again.

And again.

The sound cut through the room like a thin blade.

Cynthia frowned. "That's persistent spam."

He stood up abruptly. "I'll put it on silent."

He walked away, his shoulders tense.

Cynthia watched him from the couch, unease stirring quietly in her chest.

Something about that call didn't feel random.

When Alexander returned, his smile was back—but it didn't quite reach his eyes.

"You okay?" she asked gently.

"Yes," he said. "Let's not let a phone ruin a good day."

She nodded, though doubt lingered.

They moved closer on the couch, her head resting lightly against his shoulder. His arm came around her, protective, reassuring.

For a moment, everything felt perfect again.

But the phone buzzed once more.

And Alexander pretended not to notice.
