Chapter 9 - Insanity 2: Under The Moonlight (5)

"Several people I met asked about my condition."

"When I told them the reason, they all said the same thing."

"Poor thing, since you're so young." The girl looked a little gloomy.

"They all felt sorry for me."

"Those who knew I practiced ballet also said I'd never dance again because I couldn't see."

"And even my mother cried and apologized to me. For not being able to find an eye donor soon enough."

"But pity and apologies weren't what I wanted to hear." The girl smiled at the boy.

"Thank you for saying that for me."

The boy flinched. He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.

He hadn't expected his words to make her happy.

"Can I ask you something?" The girl asked.

"Yes." The boy nodded.

"What about you?" The girl asked about the boy's condition.

The boy was silent for a moment.

"I love running. I'm training to be a track athlete. Not for anything else. But because I love it."

"But an accident happened. I can't move my legs now. But the doctor said there might be a chance for me to walk again with therapy."

"But even so, it won't be completely healed like before." The boy's face fell.

The girl felt sad for him.

"Even so, you have to continue treatment. Maybe a miracle will happen and you can run again." The girl encouraged him.

The boy nodded.

"I want to thank you too."

"To me?"

"Yes. If I hadn't met you that day, I might was... " The boy couldn't finish his sentence.

Still, the girl knew what he wanted to say.

"Thank goodness." The girl smiled.

Then the next night, when the boy came to the park, no one was there. He was there waiting for her. Time passed, and she didn't come. He returned to the hospital.

Then the next day, she still didn't show up.

Then the next night, the boy remembered his friend. He immediately went to the girl's house. He knocked on the door. But no one answered.

The boy suddenly remembered his friend. His heart was beating fast and his face began to turn pale.

What if the same thing happened to the girl as his friend that time?

His thoughts began to become confused. His eyes became unfocused. The boy knocked on the door again, but there was still no answer.

"No, no. Calm down. Sure, sure, maybe she's gone. Yes, that's for sure." The boy reassured himself.

The next day, the girl still didn't come. The light in the boy's eyes completely went out. He left in a daze. He intended to return to the hospital, but without realizing it, he steered his wheelchair in the opposite direction.

He went quite far from the hospital area. When the boy came to, he was a little shocked. He looked for a way back.

While in the middle of the road, a truck was speeding out of control. The driver honked repeatedly and shouted for everyone in front of him to get out of the way. The truck's brakes were not working.

The boy heard the horn and turned toward the oncoming truck. His mind was blank, preventing him from moving. As the truck drew closer, the boy regained consciousness.

But it was too late.

His body was hit hard, and he and his wheelchair were thrown far away. Blood was etched on the road.

After hitting the boy, the truck stopped after hitting a wall. The driver was fine and immediately got out to meet the child. He immediately called an ambulance. Several residents who witnessed the incident were shocked. They began to crowd around the scene.

On the cold night, the boy's body lay on the road. Blood was pouring out of him. He could feel the warmth of the flowing blood and the cold night breeze.

The boy remained motionless. His breathing was becoming heavy.

"My body doesn't feel any pain."

"That's because the impact was so severe that your brain is slow to respond to pain."

"Is that so?"

"Yes."

"Thank goodness."

"Death feels quite scary. I tried to commit suicide before."

"It's all like that."

"But I don't hate it."

"Why?"

"I don't know either."

"Is she okay? I hope she gets an eye donor soon and can see again."

"Why do you hope she can see again?"

"Her dance was so beautiful, it would be a shame if she didn't perform on stage."

"Is that so?"

"Yes."

"Will I be able to meet my friend there?"

"I don't know."

The noise around him began to fade.

"If I leave, will my family be sad?"

"I don't know."

"I hope they'll be sad, but I also don't want them to cry. Humans are strange."

"When I couldn't move my legs, I hated everything, including myself. But slowly I started to wonder if I should just keep running? There are still so many things I can do in this world."

"Just like that girl, I don't want to give up."

"But humans are weak creatures."

"Are you sad?"

"Yes."

"Do you regret it?"

"Of course."

"But it's too late for all that." The boy's breathing became heavier.

The blood flowing from him wouldn't stop. The faint sound of an ambulance siren could be heard in the distance.

"At least I want to apologize and thank my brother, my parents, and that girl."

"I want to say goodbye properly. But I don't think I can."

The boy's lips trembled. Tears began to well up in his eyes.

"Even though my parents opposed my dream and seemed indifferent to me, they were the ones who took care of all my medical expenses at the hospital. They always visited me, even though we didn't talk."

"My brother, who was always cold to me, actually cares for me. I hope he'll always be happy."

"The girl I just met opened my dark eyes. Even though she was having a hard time, she still smiled and kept dancing."

The boy tried to catch his increasingly heavy breath.

"I want to see them one last time."

Tears welled up in his unblinking eyes.

His vision began to blur.

His body began to freeze from the cold.

His eyes looked up at the sky. The dark night sky with only one moon up there.

The boy smiled, looking up at the moon.

Under the moonlight, the boy closed his eyes.

His breath stopped.

"Even if fate has already been written, I will still pray for you."

"May you achieve your dreams in your next life."
