00: prolog

Giyuu and Sanemi were two people who didn't get along at all; they were like a storm in a teacup. But then their teacher decided to put them in the same dorm room. It was pretty cozy—two beds and other stuff for studying and so on. Of course, neither of them liked it one bit, but what could they do? They had no choice.

The two roommates sat in tense silence during their first day of living together. Sanemi's eyes were fixed on his phone, while Giyuu unpacked his belongings with deliberate slowness. "Hey, don't touch my stuff. I'll kill you if you do."

Sanemi's voice was sharp as he noticed Giyuu's hand near his gaming console. Giyuu shot Sanemi an icy glare but withdrew his hand, choosing to focus on organizing his desk instead. "Whatever. Just stay on your side of the room."

Sanemi muttered under his breath, turning up his music to drown out any potential conversation. The next day, Giyuu returned to find Sanemi sprawled across his bed, headphones on and snoring loudly. Clothes and empty soda cans littered the floor. Sanemi stirred slightly but didn't wake up, leaving Giyuu to navigate around the mess with barely contained irritation.

Giyuu carefully stepped over the mess, his jaw clenched as he tried to keep his composure. He grabbed his textbooks and headed for the door.

"This is going to be a nightmare..." As Giyuu reached for the doorknob, Sanemi suddenly sat up, rubbing his eyes with a groggy expression. "Where are you going? It's not even 6 yet."

His voice was still thick with sleep, hair messy and sticking up in all directions.

Giyuu turned slightly, keeping his hand on the doorknob. "To study. Unlike you, some of us actually care about our grades." He opened the door with more force than necessary. Sanemi scoffed, flopping back onto the bed with a dismissive wave. "Nerd. Have fun with your books."

He pulled the covers over his head, clearly planning to go back to sleep. Hours passed, and when Giyuu returned, he found Sanemi had finally cleaned up his side of the room - though it was obvious he'd just shoved everything under his bed. Sanemi was now playing basketball outside, his loud shouts occasionally echoing through the open window.

The evening grew dark, and Sanemi returned sweaty and disheveled. He threw his basketball against the wall repeatedly, not even acknowledging Giyuu's presence. "Stop that noise. I'm trying to study." Giyuu finally snapped, looking up from his textbook with visible annoyance. Sanemi caught the ball mid-bounce, turning to face Giyuu with a challenging smirk.

"Make me. Or are you too busy being a perfect little student?" He started dribbling again, purposely making more noise. Giyuu slammed his book shut and stood up abruptly, his patience completely worn thin. "I'm serious. Either play outside or get a pair of headphones. This is unbearable."

His voice was cold and controlled, but there was an edge to it that suggested he might actually throw something. Sanemi was taken aback that Giyuu is acting like this. Sanemi stopped dribbling, his eyes widening slightly at Giyuu's unexpected outburst. "Damn, you actually have a spine after all." He chuckled darkly, but there was a hint of respect in his tone.

Sanemi caught the ball one last time, holding it against his hip as he studied Giyuu's serious expression. "Fine. I'll play outside... for now."

He grabbed his phone and basketball gear, heading for the door with a lingering glance at Giyuu. As Sanemi reached the door, he paused and turned back with a mischievous grin.

"But don't think this means I'm scared of you, Tomioka."

He emphasized Giyuus name with a mocking tone before leaving. The room finally fell into silence. Giyuu let out a long breath, running his hand through his hair in frustration. "This is going to be a long semester..."

Hours later, Sanemi returned again, this time with food and drinks. He tossed a sports drink at Giyuu's desk.

"Here. Don't say I never did anything nice."

He sprawled across his bed, cracking open his own drink with a casual air. Giyuu stared at the drink, clearly confused by the gesture. He picked it up hesitantly. "Why? What's your angle?" His eyes narrowed suspiciously as he examined the bottle. Sanemi rolled his eyes dramatically, taking a long sip from his own drink. "Can't a guy just be nice without ulterior motives? It's hot outside, idiot."

He smirked at Giyuu's suspicious nature. "It's getting late, we should go to bed." Sanemi glanced at the clock and groaned.

"Ugh, already? Time flies when you're not annoying me." He stretched lazily on his bed, showing no intention of getting ready for sleep. Giyuu began organizing his desk, deliberately ignoring Sanemi's comment.

"Turn off the lights when you're done being dramatic." He turned away to change into his sleepwear. Sanemi watched Giyuu's back, a thoughtful expression crossing his face before he masked it with his usual arrogance. "Whatever, princess. Don't forget to brush your hair before bed." He reached for his phone again, preparing to stay up late.

Giyuu finished changing and climbed into bed, pulling the covers up to his chin. "Stop calling me that. And don't play your games all night. Some of us actually need sleep." His voice was muffled by the pillow. "Why are you so boring? You are studying, breathing and sleeping. That is the only thing you do! And you sleep how long? 16 hours or what?!" Giyuu turned to face Sanemi with an icy glare.

"I have priorities. Unlike you, I actually care about my future." He sat up slightly, clearly irritated by the accusation. Sanemi sat up too, a challenging grin spreading across his face.

"Future? That's rich coming from someone who barely talks to anyone. What future involves being a complete loner?" He leaned forward, genuinely curious about Giyuu's response.

Giyuu's expression darkened, his grip tightening on the blanket. "At least I have goals. What do you have? Nothing but a bunch of meaningless distractions." His voice carried a sharp edge of bitterness. Sanemi's expression shifted to one of anger, his eyes flashing dangerously in the dim light. "Meaningless? Everything I do matters. Unlike your pathetic existence."

He stood up abruptly, towering over Giyuu's bed. Giyuu stood up as well, matching Sanemi's aggressive stance. "Then prove it. Stop being such a loud, disruptive nuisance."

The tension in the room was palpable, both boys glaring at each other. Sanemi grabbed Giyuu's collar, pulling him closer with a snarl.

"You're really asking for it, Tomioka. Don't push me." His grip was firm, knuckles white with anger.

Giyuu remained unfazed, his eyes cold and calculating. "Let go of me, Shinazugawa. This is exactly why we can't get along." He kept his voice steady, though his heart was racing. Sanemi's jaw clenched, but after a moment of intense staring, he released Giyuu with a rough shove. "Fine. But don't think I won't make your life hell if you keep testing me."

He backed away, running a hand through his hair in frustration. Giyuu stumbled slightly from the push but quickly regained his balance.

"I'm not afraid of you or your empty threats. You're all bark and no bite."

He straightened his shirt, maintaining eye contact with defiance. Sanemi laughed bitterly, a dangerous smile playing on his lips.

"Oh, you have no idea what I'm capable of. But we'll see who's right." He walked back to his bed, picking up his basketball and tossing it against the wall repeatedly. The sound of the ball hitting the wall became rhythmic, almost taunting. "You know, I bet I could make you cry if I really tried." He spoke without looking at Giyuu, his voice low and menacing.

Giyuu rolled his eyes, though he couldn't completely hide his unease. "You're pathetic. I've dealt with worse than you in my life."

He laid back down, trying to ignore the bouncing ball. Sanemi smirked at Giyuu's attempt to appear tough. "Worse than me? Doubt it. Everyone has a breaking point, Tomioka. Even you."

He suddenly stopped the ball, holding it in his hands. "What if I reach my breaking point years ago?" Sanemi paused, caught off guard by the unexpected response. His expression shifted to one of curiosity. "Then you're even more broken than I thought. What happened to you?"

He leaned forward, genuinely interested despite their animosity. Giyuu turned away, his back facing Sanemi again.

"None of your business. Just leave me alone and go to sleep." His voice was quieter now, almost vulnerable. Sanemi watched Giyuu for a moment, then tossed the ball aside with a frustrated sigh. "Whatever. But don't think I won't figure it out eventually. I always do."

He turned off his bedside lamp, plunging half the room into darkness.

The silence that followed was heavy and uncomfortable. Sanemi shifted in his bed, unable to sleep. "You're a real mystery, Tomioka. Makes me want to solve you even more. " "Let me sleep." Sanemi groaned dramatically but finally settled down, pulling his covers over himself.

"Fine, fine. But tomorrow's another day to annoy you. Sweet dreams, bastard." Giyuu pulled his blanket over his head, mumbling under his breath. "You're insufferable." Sanemi chuckled softly, his voice muffled by the darkness. "And you're stuck with me. Better get used to it." Sanemi watched as Giyuu's breathing evened out, a strange feeling of protectiveness washing over him.

He shook his head, confused by his own thoughts. "Stupid roommate." Sanemi tossed and turned for a while longer before finally drifting off to sleep, his last conscious thought being about how peaceful Giyuu looked when he wasn't being an ice prince.
