Chapter 4 - 02: A nightmare (1/4)

Sanemi scowled at Giyuu's teasing, but there was no real anger behind it. "Shut up. I'm just not as smart as you." He muttered, secretly pleased with the praise despite his defensive attitude. Giyuu leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms.

"You're not stupid, Sanemi. You just need to pay attention more."

He paused, then added with a hint of mischief. "And maybe stop getting distracted by every little thing." Sanemi's eyes widened slightly, realizing Giyuu was implying he was getting distracted by him. He quickly looked down at his notes. "I'm not distracted by anything! Let's just keep studying."

He said defensively, trying to hide his embarrassment. Giyuu chuckled softly, noticing Sanemi's flustered state. He decided to let it go for now. "Fine, fine. We still have to cover respiratory diseases."

He turned to a new page in the textbook, a small smirk playing on his lips. Sanemi shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to ignore the way Giyuu's smirk made his stomach flutter.

"Great... more stuff to memorize."

He mumbled sarcastically, secretly relieved to change the subject. Giyuu began explaining the symptoms of emphysema, his voice steady and professional.

"Emphysema is caused by damage to the alveoli. The air sacs become scarred and can't exchange oxygen properly."

He glanced at Sanemi to make sure he was following along.

Sanemi nodded, trying to focus on the medical terms rather than how close Giyuu was sitting. "Scarred alveoli... so the person can't breathe well?"

He asked, genuinely curious despite his earlier reluctance. Giyuu nodded back, impressed that Sanemi was actually engaging in the discussion. "Exactly. It's a progressive disease that affects lung function over time. Do you know what causes it?"

He asked, testing Sanemi's knowledge further. Sanemi thought for a moment, then responded with a bit more confidence.

"Long-term smoking, right? And other lung irritants." He remembered seeing something about it in the news recently. Giyuu's eyes lit up with approval. "Yes, smoking is the main culprit. But exposure to certain chemicals and pollutants can also contribute."

He leaned forward slightly, his tone becoming more serious. "It's important to know these things, especially since smoking is becoming more prevalent among teenagers." Sanemi frowned at the mention of teenagers smoking.

"Yeah, it's stupid. My brother... he used to smoke." He said quietly, a hint of pain in his voice. Giyuu noticed the change in Sanemi's demeanor and his expression softened again.

"Did he stop?"

He asked gently, sensing there was more to the story.

"No, that stupid brat is still doing it. He is to young for it and he still do it." Giyuu sighed, understanding the frustration.

"You're right. It's irresponsible of him. How old is he?" Sanemi clenched his fists, anger and worry mixing in his expression.

"He's 16. I keep telling him to quit, but he won't listen. Says he's too cool for it."

He let out a frustrated huff. Giyuu placed a hand on Sanemi's shoulder, a rare gesture of comfort from him. "Teenagers can be stubborn. But you're his brother. Maybe you should try a different approach."

He suggested, genuinely concerned for both Sanemi and his brother. Sanemi tensed at the touch, but didn't pull away. He looked at Giyuu with a mix of surprise and gratitude.

"Like what? He thinks I'm just being annoying. And I can't force him to stop." He admitted, sounding defeated.

Giyuu removed his hand and leaned back again, thinking. "You could show him the consequences of smoking. Like how it affects his health and how it's affecting you."

He suggested, his voice calm and rational. Sanemi considered this, his eyes flickering with determination.

"I could show him the x-rays of his lungs. Maybe that'll scare him straight."

He said, a hint of his usual fierceness returning. Giyuu nodded in agreement.

"That's a good idea. And if he still refuses, you could offer to help him quit. Be there for him through the withdrawal process."

He added, knowing it wouldn't be easy. Sanemi ran a hand through his hair, looking torn between his anger and his brotherly love. "I just want him to be okay. I don't want to lose him like I lost... others."

His voice trailed off, revealing a vulnerability he rarely showed.

"Want to continue to study? You look...vulnerable." Sanemi quickly composed himself, trying to mask his emotions again.

"Yeah, let's study. And I'm not vulnerable, I'm just... tired."

He said defensively, picking up his textbook again. Giyuu didn't push further, but he kept a watchful eye on Sanemi as they returned to their studies.

"Alright. Next chapter is about lung cancer prevention."
