Chapter 16 - Chapter 15 : Gathering of Shadows

Part 1: Pawns in Light

Uchiha Compound — Main Administrative Hall

Located in the far eastern corner of Konoha Village, the main administrative building of the Uchiha Compound was submerged in a strange silence under the fading afternoon sunlight.

From the outside, the compound appeared as organized as ever. The red-and-white fan crests of the Uchiha were proudly displayed on the building walls. Members of the Uchiha Police Force patrolled the streets, their gazes far more vigilant than usual. On the road leading toward the central part of the village, the presence of several unfamiliar faces could also be felt.

The Uchiha were well aware that they were being secretly watched at every moment. They also knew how cleverly the village elders were trying to hide this fact, but the tension hung thick and tangible in the air.

Inside the administrative hall, Fugaku Uchiha, the head of the Uchiha clan, sat upon a raised wooden seat. His face was as rigid as carved stone. Directly across from him, sitting calmly in the lotus position on a tatami mat, was Shisui Uchiha.

Three years of grueling border service had rendered Shisui far more mature and grave than before. His body now carried the composure of a battle-tested soldier. Beneath his loose black garments, well-toned muscles bore testimony to long campaigns, harsh weather, and constant life-or-death combat. The short Uchiha blade strapped to his back stood as a silent testament to his military identity and Uchiha prowess.

After Fugaku, if any young individual held the highest political respect, weight within the clan, and military influence, it was Shisui.

Shunshin no Shisui — Shisui of the Body Flicker, an unrivaled master of the technique.

To the younger generation of the clan, he was a living inspiration. To the elders, he was the sole beacon of hope in the darkness. And to Konoha, he was one of the most reliable and loyal Uchiha shinobi.

Fugaku stared for a moment at the flickering flame of the lamp placed on his table. Then, his heavy, solemn voice resonated through the silence of the hall:

"After spending three years at the border, you might find the situation in the village a bit strange and suffocating, Shisui."

Shisui looked at Fugaku with a calm and composed expression.

"I did notice some strange shifts in the atmosphere on my way back, Fugaku-sama."

A bitter, dry smile touched Fugaku's lips. He slowly shook his head.

"Shifts?" He let out a cold sigh. "It is not merely a shift, Shisui. It is a deep, eroding mistrust that is growing like termites. The administrative structure of the village wants to consume us whole."

He rose from his seat, tucked his hands into his broad sleeves, and walked over to the window. From there, the streets and guards of the Uchiha Compound were clearly visible.

"The Hokage faction and their council of advisors are systematically pushing our clan away from the primary political center of the village. The responsibility of the Police Force rests in our hands on paper, but the authority to make major village decisions is continuously being stripped from us. Among the civilian population, an image of a cruel and tyrannical organization is being deliberately cultivated for our clan. The patience of our youth is wearing thin."

Shisui listened attentively and asked with absolute gravity, "Has the situation truly deteriorated to such an extent, Fugaku-sama?"

"You were at the border for three years," Fugaku replied, turning around. "You faced enemy shinobi head-on in battle. But here, within the very walls of our own village, we have been fighting a different, invisible, and venomous war."

There was bitterness and anger in Fugaku's voice, but it was not merely personal rage; it was the existential dread hovering over the entire clan.

"Danzō's secret gaze is fixed on our every move. ANBU operatives track every small activity of our people. And our Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi..." Fugaku paused, disappointment creeping into his eyes, "Hiruzen still believes that a few hollow, sweet words can mend this historic rift. He is merely wasting time."

Shisui lowered his eyes. Inwardly, he knew Fugaku's frustration was not groundless. Forcing the clan to relocate to a isolated corner far from the main village wall and excluding them from political decision-making was stoking the fires of rebellion within the Uchiha. Yet, Shisui's heart still held an unwavering faith in the system. He believed that no matter how flawed a system was, it could be reformed from within without resorting to destruction and war.

Fugaku walked back and took his seat. His eyes grew even darker.

"And then... amid all of this, came a new variable. Naruto Uzumaki."

Shisui's eyes immediately snapped back to Fugaku. He focused completely.

"Naruto?"

"Yes." Fugaku remained silent for a brief moment, as if carefully framing his thoughts. "Even while stationed at the border, you may have heard various rumors about him. But what I am about to tell you is the story of the past few years that has not been made public."

Shisui listened intently, without blinking.

"When Naruto was very young, most people and officials in the village viewed him merely as an unfortunate child containing the Nine-Tailed demon. But around the age of four, a select few noticed for the first time that he was by no means an ordinary child."

"His intelligence?" Shisui guessed.

"Not just intelligence, Shisui." Fugaku's eyes narrowed. "His memory was abnormal. He could recall years-old conversations word for word. He observed people's subtle habits, their body language, and their lies. He began comprehending matters that no child of that age—and frankly, not even many clever adult shinobi—could grasp."

Fugaku rested his fingers on the wooden table.

"From that moment, the perspective of the village higher-ups and the Hokage began to shift regarding that boy. Initially, they were only concerned that the Jinchūriki might lose his emotional control and run amok. But then, the nature of their anxiety shifted entirely."

"What kind of anxiety?"

"The fear that the child understands far too much."

A heavy, dense silence settled over the room for a few moments.

"And when he formally entered the Academy..." Fugaku continued, "that reality became even more starkly evident."

Shisui asked in a low voice, "What did he do at the Academy, Fugaku-sama?"

"He never hid his thoughts. He does not pretend to mask his mind." Fugaku's voice grew even lower. "In class, he spoke such sharp truths about the established system of the village, its history, and the hypocrisy of authority that the Academy instructors and several veteran shinobi felt deeply unsettled. He stated plainly that he would not accept a world built on lies and political deception."

An unprecedented gravity washed over Shisui's face. He wondered how a six-year-old child could possess such a profound perspective.

"And what happened after that?"

"A few weeks ago, an unprecedented incident occurred at the Hyūga Compound." Fugaku paused, uncertainty lingering in his eyes. "This is an event that neither I nor the other major clans of the village have fully been able to comprehend."

Shisui looked at him inquisitively. "Hana Hyūga of the Hyūga clan?"

"Yes." Fugaku spoke in a quiet, mysterious tone. "According to secret reports from the ANBU and the Hyūga, that boy restored Hana's virtually destroyed chakra pathway system. A treatment considered impossible even for the greatest medical-ninjutsu experts."

A faint spark of astonishment and disbelief flashed in Shisui's eyes. "Is such a thing truly possible? Could it be merely a rumor?"

Fugaku immediately answered, "I did not witness it with my own eyes. And something so extraordinary would be foolish to accept as absolute truth based solely on unverified reports." He leaned forward slightly. "However, Hana Hyūga is completely alive, healthy, and standing on her own feet following that incident. The Hyūga family itself is not denying it. And even more importantly—Naruto said things there that he had no conceivable way of knowing."

"Our Mikoto?"

Fugaku's expression turned extraordinarily rigid.

"Yes." He closed his eyes for a brief moment as he uttered his wife's name, as if suppressing a deep pain. "Naruto spoke Mikoto's name in front of everyone. He referenced her past with Kushina and the clan's cold indifference. And after that encounter... Mikoto has completely broken down from within."

Shisui fell silent for a moment. Lines of concern etched across his face. "How is she right now?"

"She has not stepped out of her room for the past two weeks. She speaks to no one."

Genuine sympathy showed on Shisui's face. "Did Naruto's words have such a profound impact?"

"It is not merely the effect of Naruto's words," Fugaku said in a heavy voice. "She is fighting the guilt and her past that she had suppressed for years. Naruto simply pulled back the curtain on that wound." Fugaku let out a long breath. "I tried talking to her, but she has no answers even for herself."

Mence fell over the two of them once more.

Then Fugaku spoke in an extremely calm and measured tone—

"I want to personally understand Naruto, Shisui."

Shisui looked at him. "You, personally?"

"Yes. I do not want the Uchiha clan to make any final judgment about an individual whom we have not even observed with our own eyes. We cannot rely solely on the reports of others." Fugaku looked out the window. "You and Itachi go to the Academy today. Go meet Sasuke."

Shisui nodded in agreement.

Fugaku continued— "And if you happen to meet Naruto there..." He paused for a moment, then added, "Extend a formal invitation for him to come to our home."

Shisui was slightly taken aback. "An invitation to our Uchiha Compound?"

"Yes." Fugaku's voice was very calm yet firm this time. "Mikoto wishes to meet him. It is her personal desire."

Shisui understood immediately. This was not just an emotional request from Mikoto; Fugaku himself wanted to observe what kind of child this truly was—the boy who had kept the village elders deeply unsettled for the past two years, and whose single action had shaken the very foundations of both the Hyūga and Uchiha clans.

However, Fugaku was not going to meet Naruto directly himself, as that would cause unnecessary commotion in the political corridors of the village. The first step had to be taken by Shisui.

The Arrival of Itachi Uchiha

At that exact moment, the heavy wooden door slid open almost soundlessly.

A slender yet remarkably well-balanced youth stepped inside.

Twelve-year-old Itachi Uchiha.

He was still wearing his standard blue-and-black ANBU uniform. The porcelain ANBU mask was held in his right hand. The deep lines beneath his eyes bore signs of constant exhaustion and mental strain, yet his dark obsidian eyes possessed that same extraordinary, cold composure that had caused his name to be uttered with respect and dread in the corridors of ANBU headquarters at such a young age.

"Father. Shisui-niisan." He greeted them both with utmost politeness.

Fugaku looked at his elder son. "Is your duty for today complete, Itachi?"

"Yes, Father."

A warm, familial smile appeared on Shisui's face. "I've been hearing about your accomplishments even at the border, Itachi. Word in the ANBU is that you might be given command of your own squad very soon."

Itachi displayed no pride or excitement on his face. "That is merely a rumor at headquarters for now, Shisui-niisan."

Fugaku observed his eldest son closely. Deep within, he held the unwavering faith of a strict father—no matter how great a responsibility Itachi bore for the village, whether he wore an ANBU uniform or carried out the Hokage's orders, he was ultimately Uchiha blood. Even while serving the entire village, he would never forget his loyalty to his family and his clan.

Itachi offered no reaction to his father's unspoken sentiment. His dark eyes remained completely calm and neutral.

His silence was not an expression of agreement. Within Itachi, deep questions and mental conflict raged regarding the widening chasm between the rules of the village and the growing radicalism of the Uchiha clan.

Shisui rose from his seat. "Itachi, will you walk with me to the Academy?"

"To see Sasuke?"

"Yes, it's been quite some time since I saw him."

Itachi gave a slight nod. "Sure, let's go."

Fugaku watched the two young men as they prepared to leave. "And remember, Shisui," he instructed from behind, "If you meet Naruto there, extend the invitation to come to the Uchiha Compound. No pressure or politics. Just a direct invitation."

"I understand, Fugaku-sama," Shisui replied.

Both shinobi walked out of the hall.

The Streets of Konoha

Shisui and Itachi began walking through the quiet, paved streets of the Uchiha Compound toward the main market of the village. For a while, both walked side by side in silence.

Shisui's mind was swirling with his recent meeting with the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. He now carried two distinct and conflicting responsibilities on his shoulders.

The Hokage wanted him to use his gentle approach to understand Naruto's thoughts and ensure his loyalty to the village.

And his own clan wanted him to gauge Naruto so the Uchiha could formulate their future strategy.

Their goals were different, yet at the center of it all stood that very same six-year-old child.

Itachi sensed Shisui's silence and the thoughts hovering on his face.

"Are you wondering how to initiate the conversation once we reach the Academy?" Itachi asked suddenly.

Shisui offered a soft smile. "Is my hesitation really that obvious?"

"Yes," Itachi said without hesitation.

Shisui laughed lightly and said, "So, do you have any suggestions on how to handle this situation, Itachi?"

"No." Itachi gave a direct and practical response. "It would be better to observe him in person first and read his body language."

Shisui looked at Itachi, his eyes growing slightly serious. "What do you think about Naruto Uzumaki, Itachi?"

Itachi walked in silence for a few moments. "I haven't observed him enough due to ANBU missions. I have only read the classified files about him." Then, after a brief pause, he added— "However, bringing a fabricated plan or lies before a child who knows hidden answers without even asking would not be wise."

Shisui's smile faded slightly. "Your mind still runs far ahead of your age."

"That is what is taught to survive in ANBU," Itachi stated in a flat tone.

Without further conversation, the two continued walking toward the Academy.

Konoha Academy — Main Gate

The clock struck exactly two in the afternoon. The heavy brass bell hanging atop the massive Academy building rang out.

Clang... Clang... Clang...

The heavy wooden main gates of the Academy swung open, and a crowd of children from various clans and civilian families poured out, laughing and talking. The sound of children chatting, giggling, and running footsteps echoed throughout the courtyard.

Shisui and Itachi stood silently under the cool shade of a large tree near the Academy gate.

A few moments later, Sasuke Uchiha emerged from the crowd. As usual, he was walking a bit apart from the other children, alone. His small face clearly reflected the gloomy atmosphere that had enveloped his home for the past two weeks and his worry over his mother's illness.

However, the moment Sasuke's eyes landed on Itachi and Shisui standing under the shade of the tree, a sudden bright spark lit up his gloomy eyes.

"Itachi-niisan! Shisui-niisan!" Forgetting his worries, Sasuke came running over to them.

Shisui smiled, stepped forward, and patted Sasuke's black hair affectionately. "How are you doing, little Sasuke?"

"I'm doing great!" Sasuke declared enthusiastically.

Yet, Itachi's sharp gaze instantly caught the faint shadow of worry hidden beneath Sasuke's eyes. He knew Sasuke was deeply troubled on the inside regarding their mother Mikoto's condition.

Meanwhile, another primary group of children exited through the Academy gate.

Hinata Hyūga, Shikamaru Nara, Chōji Akimichi, and Ino Yamanaka.

And right in the middle of that group walked—Naruto Uzumaki.

He was entirely calm and composed. His golden hair glistened in the fading afternoon sunlight. His face bore neither playfulness nor any trace of fear.

The moment Naruto crossed the main gate of the Academy, his deep blue eyes shifted and locked directly onto the two Uchiha standing under the shade of the tree.

Fugaku was not present, yet Naruto recognized both of them in a single glance—

Shisui Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha.

Two different perspectives from two different generations.

One was a man who held an absolute belief in reforming even a rotten system from within.

The other was an extraordinary child who already understood just how impossible it was to change a system from within its own framework.

Shisui watched Naruto walk toward him. He suddenly felt a strange sensation—the child about whom he had been hearing stories for days was standing before him, looking at him as if he had been anticipating Shisui's arrival long beforehand.

Without any complex strategy, Shisui stepped forward in a completely natural manner.

"Naruto?"

Naruto stopped in his tracks. He looked into Shisui's eyes.

"Shunshin no Shisui."

Shisui's eyebrows raised slightly. "You know my name?"

Naruto answered effortlessly, without a hint of hesitation— "Who in this village doesn't know names like Shunshin no Shisui and Copy Ninja Kakashi?"

A faint, friendly smile remained on Shisui's face. Technically, there was nothing unusual about the answer. Both names were famous throughout Konoha. Shisui's three years of bravery at the border and his unmatched Body Flicker technique had made him a legend, while Kakashi's reputation was equally widespread.

Naruto continued— "One mostly hears good things about you."

Shisui smiled. "Then I hope those things were true."

Naruto's blue eyes remained perfectly fixed on Shisui's face. "That is something you will have to determine for yourself."

Shisui accepted the response as a subtle, philosophical challenge. He realized that the depth of this six-year-old child was beyond any ordinary measure.

A short distance from the main gate, hidden within the dense branches of a massive neem tree, another individual was watching this entire interaction intently.

Silver hair. A porcelain ANBU mask over his face. Left eye covered.

Copy Ninja Kakashi.

Kakashi was not there by coincidence. He was part of the ANBU squads deployed for Naruto's security and surveillance. But at this moment, his entire focus was fixed on this unusual encounter between two of the Uchiha clan's most powerful warriors and Naruto.

Dropping any roundabout diplomacy, Shisui addressed the core matter directly—

"Actually, Naruto... I came to extend an invitation to you."

Naruto asked calmly— "To the Uchiha Compound?"

Shisui was momentarily stunned. Having no premeditated plan, his surprise was entirely natural. "How did you know?"

Naruto looked into his eyes and said— "That question was already written on your face."

Itachi immediately logged Naruto's subtle observation into his mind. His eyes narrowed slightly.

Shisui caught his breath and stated plainly— "Fugaku-sama wants you to come to our home."

Naruto remained completely silent, his expression unreadable.

Then Shisui spoke the key reason he had truly come— "Mikoto-san wants to meet you."

For a few moments, a deep, enigmatic shadow settled into Naruto's blue eyes.

Mikoto Uchiha.

His late mother Kushina's best friend. His designated godmother. The woman whose past and present guilt Naruto knew everything about.

Yet, neither anger nor bitterness appeared on Naruto's face. He simply deliberated for a few moments.

Then, in an extremely calm and clear voice, he said—

"Yes, I will come..." He paused briefly, then completed his sentence, "...on the weekend evening."

Shisui nodded, accepting the proposed time.

With that, Naruto turned and walked away to the gates.

Part 2: Pawns of the Darkness

Far from the Borders of Konoha — Hidden Outpost of 'ROOT'

Far from the borders of Konoha Village, hidden beneath a massive, ancient rock deep within the dense forest, lay an extremely secret outpost of 'ROOT'. This location was so meticulously concealed that under normal circumstances, even ANBU operatives could not locate it.

Inside the outpost, a single torch flickered. Its trembling light cast long, distorted shadows against the stone walls.

Standing face-to-face amidst those shadows were two figures—Danzo Shimura and Orochimaru.

Leaning on his cane, Danzo asked without any preamble, "Why did you take the risk of sending a secret message to meet me, Orochimaru? As a member of the Akatsuki right now, your presence here could be dangerous."

A low chuckle escaped Orochimaru's chest.

"Risk? The entire shinobi world is finally opening its eyes to a six-year-old child, Danzo."

Danzo's single visible eye narrowed.

"To a child?"

"Yes." Orochimaru's smile broadened slightly. "How amusing. For years, major villages, powerful clans, and formidable shinobi have plotted against one another... and now, a child presents a question before them to which no one possesses an answer." A spark of curiosity flickered in Orochimaru's eyes. "Even the Akatsuki is keeping an eye on this."

Danzo tapped his cane on the ground.

"If you came merely to watch the spectacle, you are wasting time. I do not need talk; I need solutions... Do you have a way to bring that child completely under our control?"

A satirical smile touched Orochimaru's lips.

"Control? You love that word, Danzo. I did not come here to hand you a weapon. I want to understand that child. Naruto Uzumaki has raised a very intriguing question before me."

Danzo stated coldly, "He is merely a Jinchūriki."

"What he truly is would be premature to decide just yet," Orochimaru replied in a calm tone.

He then pulled out a small scroll from his sleeve.

"I am taking my research into a new phase... Edo Tensei. A technique that does not merely bring the deceased back for war, but restores their consciousness and memories in a far more stable state. And according to my information... his mother holds an exceptionally vital place for that child."

Danzo's voice dropped low.

"Are you suggesting... his mother?"

A mysterious smile surfaced on Orochimaru's lips.

"The opportunity to see one's mother alive again... can prove far more powerful than any chain," Orochimaru remarked.

Gradually, a glimmer of comprehension dawned across Danzo's face.

"And what do you demand in return?"

"I wish to study the child personally. Do not worry, I will conduct all of this right within Konoha... and you will be present there."

Possibilities began racing through Danzo's mind. Naruto was unnaturally intelligent and refused to bow before any political faction, yet his deepest emotional vulnerability could be leveraged against him.

A slow smile crept onto Danzo's face.

"Very well, I accept this."

Stepping toward the dark corridor, Orochimaru remarked—

"Let us see how resilient his so-called 'truth' remains when a son stands before his resurrected mother."

His figure dissolved into the darkness.

Danzo stood alone.

Now, a potential path to reach Naruto lay before him—not through raw force or fear, but through his heart.
