Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: This world is Sick

The darkness of night had completely enveloped the Hidden Leaf Village. The colorful paper lanterns lining the main market streets were flickering out one by one, giving way to a heavy, suffocating silence. Yet, on the secret upper floor of the Akimichi clan's most famous and expansive restaurant, a single candle still burned faintly.

This was no ordinary dining hall meant for casual meals or loud gatherings. It was the village's invisible, highly classified epicenter—the room where Konoha's weightiest political decisions, military strategies, and clan alliances were forged. Here, far beyond the reach of any ANBU squad's watchful eyes, three men held council.

In the center of the room, laid out on a polished mahogany table, sat a Shogi board. Jonin Commander and chief strategist Shikaku Nara rested his cheek against his knuckles, staring intently at the wooden pieces scattered across the grid. Directly across from him sat Inoichi Yamanaka, head of the Intelligence Division, leaning heavily back in his wooden chair.

Amidst the oppressive political weight hanging in the air, a faint, weary smile briefly touched Inoichi's face.

"How are things at home, Shikaku? Has Yoshino calmed down a bit, or are you still getting chewed out over every little thing?" Inoichi asked, attempting to cut through the tension.

Shikaku let out a long, heavy sigh and leaned his head back, staring up at the wooden ceiling beams. "Sora-de! Women are truly the most terrifyingly complex strategy in this world, my friend. Trying to understand them is harder than playing a hundred Shogi moves simultaneously. And as for our Shikamaru... that boy has blown past all limits of laziness lately. He spends his entire day sitting by the window, staring at clouds. Ask him to do a single chore and you get the same answer: 'What a drag.' But to be completely honest, Inoichi... when I come home exhausted at night and see that little brat smiling peacefully, it feels like all the mental weight of the day just washes away. How's your little angel, Ino?"

"Ino takes entirely after her mother—stubborn as a mule and sharp-tongued," Inoichi replied, the stern administrative coldness on his face melting into the soft warmth of a father's affection. "First thing every morning, she demands new and rare flowers. If I ever say no, she threatens to flip the entire house upside down. But honestly, Shikaku, they are the only reason our homes feel alive. In this cruel, unfeeling shinobi world, if you aren't careful, you turn into a block of stone before you even realize it."

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed up the wooden staircase. Carrying three steaming porcelain cups of tea, Choza Akimichi entered the room. Choza was not merely the brute strength of the renowned 'Ino-Shika-Cho' triad; he was the proprietor of the village's largest restaurant network, a top merchant, and the head of the Akimichi clan. The whispers of the common citizens, the bargains of visiting traders, and the freshest rumors floating through the back alleys always reached Choza's ears first.

"Are we only talking about wives and kids, or is anyone actually going to drink this tea?" Choza smiled warmheartedly, setting the steaming cups on the table before taking a seat beside them. "Speaking of kids, Choji is a whole different story... all he cares about day and night is food! Just this afternoon, he snuck into the restaurant's main kitchen and cleared out three full platters of special BBQ all by himself. The chef just stood there in absolute shock! But truthfully, friends, seeing that innocent, carefree smile on his face brings peace to my heart. All this endless struggle, village security, diplomacy, and surviving wars... at the end of the day, we're doing it all for their bright future."

The three clan heads looked at one another. For a brief moment, politics, conspiracies, clan rivalries, and military tension ceased to exist within the four walls of that room. There sat only three fathers, loving their children unconditionally and praying for their safety.

In the shinobi world, however, such peaceful moments are agonizingly brief.

As all three took their first sip of tea, the heavy, exhausting gloom of political reality swept back into the room. The fatherly warmth in Inoichi's eyes vanished, replaced once more by the tired, sharp gaze of the Intelligence Chief.

"So... what was the final verdict of the Uchiha clan's secret meeting last night, Inoichi?" Shikaku asked, his fingers lightly brushing over his King piece on the board.

"The atmosphere has turned utterly toxic and dangerous, Shikaku," Inoichi sighed heavily, resting his head back. "The decision by the Third Hokage and the Council to force the Uchiha out of the main residential district and isolate them on the outer perimeter has set the blood of their youth on fire. Fugaku is trying his absolute best to keep the radical factions under control, but things are slipping out of his hands. A bitter sentiment has spread like wildfire through every household in their compound—that the Hokage's faction and Danzo are actively working together to erase the Uchiha from existence. I am thoroughly sick of this daily political bullshit, the endless lies, and the game of pulling each other down..."

"Though, if we're being completely objective, Fugaku's own stubbornness and clan pride poured fuel straight onto that fire," Shikaku remarked, lifting his eyes from the board to look directly at Inoichi.

"You're absolutely right, Shikaku!" Inoichi slammed a hand onto the table. "Fugaku's flat-out refusal to allow any investigation into the Uchiha clan's potential involvement on the night of the Nine-Tails attack is the root cause of this entire catastrophe. The chasm of distrust between the Hokage faction and the Uchiha opened up that night, and now it seems impossible to bridge. Fugaku insists that controlling the Kyuubi with the Sharingan is nothing more than an old myth or baseless slander, and he hid behind his clan's fragile pride. If Fugaku had been pragmatic and cooperated with Intelligence back then, the village's suspicion would have never spiraled to this lethal point!"

"To be fair, Fugaku's hands were tied too," Choza chimed in quietly, taking another sip of tea. "He was under immense pressure from his clan's radical elders and hot-headed youth. If he had permitted the Hokage's faction to investigate them, his own people would have branded him a weak, cowardly leader and revolted against him. So what happened? The Hokage faction's suspicions deepened, and the Uchiha's anger has now escalated into the sparks of a full-blown coup."

"And this political powder keg isn't limited to the Uchiha," Choza continued, drawing from his vast commercial intelligence network. "Tonight, in my main restaurant, everyone from ordinary civilians in line to lower-ranked Chunin and Jonin on patrol... they are all living under a cloud of fear and whispered rumors. Ever since the Kumogakure incident, while resentment boils within the Hyuga Branch House over Hizashi's sacrificial death, the Hyuga clan as a whole is rapidly leveraging that political sacrifice to elevate their standing and authority in the village."

"It was bound to happen," Shikaku said coldly.

"Precisely, and it's their biggest political move yet," Choza explained. "The Hokage faction is deeply indebted to the Hyuga for preventing a war with Kumo. The Hyuga Main House is exploiting that debt to the fullest. They are tightening their grip over administrative decisions, resource allocations, and social policy far more than before. The Hyuga have secured the status of 'noble martyrs' in the eyes of the public, but the whole thing is resting on a dangerously volatile balance that could shatter at any moment."

Inoichi rubbed his bloodshot eyes with both hands and placed a stack of classified intelligence files on the table. "And the stupidest, most suicidal move of all is what Danzo's 'Root' is pulling right now. The way Danzo is secretly orchestrating rumors and hatred through the streets to target that four-year-old orphan Jinchuriki boy isn't statecraft—it's pure, unadulterated madness! That tiny child is now openly hated and isolated across the entire village. Danzo thinks isolating the boy will make him easier to control, but he has no concept of how dangerous it is for the village's survival to mentally break a Jinchuriki like this!"

"When the hatred and fear of the entire village is funneled onto a four-year-old child, the risk of his mental balance snapping will hang over us every single second," Shikaku noted grimly, staring at his Shogi pieces. "And if the monster inside him breaks free, there won't be a Fourth Hokage around to save Konoha this time."

Choza stared into his tea cup for a long moment before offering a thought. "Should we tell our children—Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji—to approach the boy and try making friends with him? If our kids spend time around him and play with him, maybe it will ease some of the crushing social isolation on that poor kid."

Shikaku lifted his hand from his piece and spoke in a calm, pragmatic voice. "Yes, that's a sharp and practical strategy. If our children hang around him, we can keep a direct eye on his condition, gauge his mental state, and quietly neutralize the impact of Danzo's dirty political games."

It was a cold, deeply ironic moment.

Only minutes prior, these three fathers were gushing about the innocence of their children—Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji—their favorite foods, and their fierce love as parents. Yet the moral fabric and systemic decay of the shinobi world had degraded to the point where none of them hesitated for even a single second, nor felt a shred of guilt, over the idea of using their own young, innocent children as 'political covers' or strategic tools for village security.

Suddenly, Shikaku's hand clenched into a tight fist over the Shogi board. His face contorted with deep despair, guilt, and bitter resentment.

"What kind of world are we living in?" Shikaku's voice trembled with a rare, raw emotion. "Where weaponizing children is considered so normal? We work ourselves to the bone, shedding sweat and blood every single day, just so our children don't have to face the chaos and horror we grew up in... but it just keeps increasing, increasing, and increasing..."

Inoichi immediately leaned across the table, placing a firm hand on Shikaku's shoulder. "Calm down, Jonin Commander! You are the brain of this village. At least you shouldn't lose it. We are already dealing with enough pressure on every front; you should be keeping us calm, not losing your own composure!"

Shikaku took a long, painful breath and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry, Inoichi... But I've begun to see that everything we are trying to do has shown to have no effect whatsoever. It's so frustrating."

Choza looked at both of them, his voice steady and grave. "We can only try, Shikaku. Despite all our efforts, we are still just small cogs in a massive machine. We do what we can."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah... 'What a drag,'" Shikaku muttered, shaking his head with a bitter, sarcastic chuckle. "We exhaust ourselves trying to keep a rotten system working... There's no doubt about it."

Shikaku stared down at the King on the board and whispered under his breath:

"This world is rotten sick."

The Nara clan handled strategy, the Yamanaka ran intelligence, and the Akimichi commercial network drove the economy. But beneath the prosperous, peaceful facade, every foundational pillar holding Konoha together was cracking from within. Silence settled over the three clan leaders—a heavy, suffocating awareness that Konoha's future was heading toward a dark and precarious precipice.

[Scene Change]

At that very moment, beneath the massive, ancient banyan tree on the village outskirts, four-year-old Naruto sat motionless in the lotus position. His eyes were gently closed, his breathing perfectly attuned to the infinite flow of Nature Energy surrounding him.

Deep within his mindscape, behind the towering iron bars, the Nine-Tailed Beast sat with its burning red eyes open, observing the hidden politics of the village.

Thanks to Naruto's deep Senjutsu meditation, Kurama's sensory perception had been amplified tenfold. Using the vast natural chakra flow as a medium, Kurama heard every single word spoken inside that secret room above the Akimichi restaurant—their fatigue, Shikaku's outburst, and their tactical plan to use their own children.

As he listened to their pathetic political struggles and Shikaku's desperate realization, a cold, mocking smirk spread across Kurama's massive face.

He looked down at Naruto's peaceful, meditative form—completely detached and absorbed in his own inner path, far removed from the petty games, clan rivalries, and rotten systems of the mortal world. Kurama slowly lowered his fiery eyelids, letting out a low, quiet chuckle as he merged back into the deep stillness and power of Naruto's meditation.
