Chapter 3 - Chapter Two · The first hunt /

Only survival.

And Lin Jin—

was already walking into the dunes.

The hunt had begun.

The desert was alive.

Wind swept over the dunes like a restless ocean,

and the sunlight poured down sharp enough to cut.

Lin Jin walked in the middle of a small hunting team — eleven players in all.

Their shadows stretched long on the sand.

---

No one talked much.

The only sound was wind grinding through armor and the low rustle of sand.

The leader, a man with a broken shield strapped to his back, raised his hand.

"Hold," he said.

他说.

The group slowed.

He turned, grin dry and cracked by the heat.

> "Sand Stalker territory."

A ripple passed through the team — a thrill of fear dressed as excitement.

---

They called themselves hunters.

But most had never fought anything that could fight back.

The dunes shifted again.

The sound was deep — like the heartbeat of something enormous beneath them.

Lin Jin stopped walking.

The wind pressed harder against his face,

and the sand beneath his boots began to move.

> "Get back," he said.

他说.

But they didn't.

Someone laughed, thinking he was joking.

---

The ground exploded.

A storm of sand rose, screaming.

From it, a creature climbed — long, coiled, armored in scales of gold and stone.

Its eyes burned white.

The Sand Stalker.

It moved like a wave breaking.

Half the team fell before they even saw its claws.

---

One player screamed —

not from pain, but from disbelief.

Light cracked through his chest like glass.

He reached out —

> "Help—!"

and his body shattered into a thousand drifting shards.

The echo of his voice stayed behind, trembling in the wind.

No blood. No body.

Just light fading into the sky.

---

The team broke.

The leader shouted something — orders, curses, it didn't matter.

The Sand Stalker lunged again,

sand rippling like liquid beneath its weight.

Lin Jin moved without thinking.

He rolled, the sand cutting into his palms,

and came up behind the beast's blind side.

The heat distorted everything —

the air, the sound, even his breath.

---

He slashed once —

a clean, vertical strike, no wasted motion.

The blade bit into the creature's side.

Light spilled from the wound,

not red, but white — blinding, pure.

The Sand Stalker screamed.

The sound was like thunder caught in glass.

It turned, tail sweeping through the air like a scythe.

---

Another player went flying.

His scream broke midair —

and the moment he hit the ground,

his body fractured,

light drifting upward,

and silence followed.

The desert took his echo and buried it.

---

Lin Jin exhaled slowly.

His eyes locked onto the creature's throat —

a rhythm, a pattern,

the pulse of something pretending to be alive.

He stepped forward once more.

The wind rose with him,

wrapping around his body like a second skin.

---

He moved.

The blade traced light through the air.

When it struck,

the desert went silent.

The creature froze mid-motion,

its body splitting down the center.

Light poured upward,

rising like embers into the white sky.

And then — it was gone.

---

A single core floated in the air where the beast had been.

It pulsed, red and slow, like a dying heart.

The wind circled it, whispering, as if the world itself was breathing again.

---

No one spoke.

The survivors stood among drifting sand,

eyes wide,

breathing hard.

The woman who had stood beside Lin Jin earlier wiped her face and whispered,

> "That… was a small one?"

Lin Jin looked at her.

His voice was calm — too calm.

> "Then we'd better pray the big ones sleep."

---

The wind howled again,

carrying the last echoes of the dead.

And in the distance,

beneath the endless dunes,

something else stirred.
