Chapter 5 - Chapter Four · Beyond Ashfort /

The desert had gone silent.

Even the wind seemed to tire of moving.

Lin Jin walked alone.

His shadow stretched long across the dunes,

a dark line over a sea of white.

---

His body still hurt.

The muscles in his arms throbbed with every step,

the heat crawling down into his bones.

He didn't count the hours anymore.

The sky never changed.

The same pale sun.

The same silence.

---

Sometimes, he thought he heard voices —

the echoes of the dead,

carried by wind through the dunes.

> "Help—"

> "Run!"

> "You did this!"

They faded as soon as he stopped walking.

Maybe they were never there.

---

He reached a ridge by dusk.

The horizon flickered — faint lights, far away.

Ashfort.

The first human city in this world.

He could see its walls rising like shadows in the heat haze.

And yet — he didn't move closer.

---

Something else moved in the distance.

A shimmer under the dying sun.

He crouched, eyes narrowing.

It wasn't a beast.

It walked upright.

A group — four, maybe five figures.

Their cloaks were long and pale,

trailing behind them like drifting smoke.

---

As they passed a dune,

Lin Jin caught the glint of metal —

coins, trinkets, weapons, all hanging from belts.

Their movements were quiet, practiced.

Predators in human form.

---

> "Grey Dealers," a voice whispered in his memory.

He'd heard the name once,

back when the world still felt new.

Information traders.

Dealers who sold everything — truth, lies, coordinates, secrets.

People said they knew things the world itself forgot.

---

The group didn't notice him.

They crossed the ridge and vanished into the haze.

Lin Jin stayed where he was.

He didn't follow.

Not anymore.

---

He turned away from Ashfort.

His eyes traced the horizon until it disappeared into night.

He built a small fire — no bigger than his hand.

The flame flickered,

throwing his face into half-light, half-shadow.

---

He took out the Scorched Core — the one from the fallen beast.

It pulsed faintly in his palm,

like it still remembered the fight.

When he gripped it tighter,

the light flared once —

then died.

---

The desert was silent again.

He stared at the dying fire.

The wind whispered around him,

moving the sand in slow spirals.

It sounded almost like a voice.

> "You'll be alone."

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The world already knew.

---

> Somewhere far away, in the markets of Ashfort,

> a rumor began to spread.

> Of a man with twin blades, walking through the dunes at dusk.

> They said he never spoke, never stayed, never failed.

> The Grey Dealers called him "The Blade Without a Name."
