Ruby's POV
The screech of our tires against asphalt made my blood freeze. Our car careened dangerously close to the cliff edge, missing death by mere inches.
"What do we do now?" I grabbed the seat back, my voice cracking with terror.
Lyanna gripped the steering wheel so tight her knuckles had gone bone white. Sweat dripped down her temples despite the cool mountain air.
"The brakes aren't responding at all," she said through clenched teeth. "But I promised Alpha I'd protect you. Nothing will happen to you while I'm here."
The car wasn't just failing to slow down. It was speeding up.
I checked the speedometer and my heart nearly stopped. We were hitting eighty miles per hour on a winding mountain road in the dark.
The road ahead looked like a death trap. Sharp turns hugged the mountainside with nothing but empty air on the other side. The darkness made everything worse, swallowing the road beyond our headlights.
