Chapter 3 - hide and seek woth pirates

What ending does an extra have?

Well… nobody really knows.

Some live quietly without ever being mentioned again.

Some die pointlessly at the hands of a minor villain.

Extras are forgettable. Replaceable. Disposable.

The author never bothered to cover much about them anyway.

'What am I even thinking about?'

I scolded myself for entertaining such nonsense during the middle of night duty—one of the most miserable tasks on this ship.

Back in my original world, I always slept late.

But I had an excuse there: the webnovels were addictive.

And here I was, in another world, fighting sleep while reading an old book I'd already memorized.

And it wasn't even past eleven.

From my position, I had a clear, uninterrupted view of the ship and the sea surrounding us.

The night sky stretched endlessly above, and the ocean mirrored it perfectly—two worlds of darkness meeting in a seamless horizon. The only lights were the ship's torches flickering like dying stars and the pale moonlight brushing the waves with silver.

I yawned and set the book aside.

That was when I saw it—movement far in the distance.

I quickly raised the spyglass.

"…Shit."

An ominous ship cut through the water like a hungry beast.

Its hull was dark and jagged, built from heavy planks reinforced with iron rivets. Torn black sails billowed like wings of a demon bird. Lanterns swung from crooked poles, illuminating pale mist around it.

And flying from the mast—

A human skull painted in white.

A long scar carved across the forehead.

The flag of the Zoulle Pirates.

I rang the bell as hard as I could.

My voice tore through the night.

"Pirates! Pirates are coming!!"

---

Aboard the Pirate Ship

The pirates on deck burst into laughter as they approached.

"Look at 'em panic already!"

"Bet they won't last a minute!"

"Easy loot tonight, boys!"

"Hope they've got rum. I'm sick o' watered fish soup!"

A tall figure stepped forward—towering at least 6'2, with a thick beard braided into rings and a black tricorn hat perched on his head.

Captain Durent Zoulle.

His grin stretched wide as he eyed our ship like a wolf spotting a wounded deer.

---

Chaos

Back on our ship, panic exploded instantly.

Fear spread like wildfire.

Men scrambled across the deck.

Some ran to load the cannons with shaking hands.

Others paced helplessly, unable to think.

I even saw one guy hide inside a barrel—only to roll off the deck and splash into the sea.

Captain Quill stared at the approaching pirate ship, his face collapsing into despair.

The crew was crumbling.

I forced myself to stay calm even as my heart hammered inside my chest.

This body… had never experienced a pirate ambush.

It had never even seen a pirate.

"God dammit… why now of all times…"

I'd sorted everything out.

Planned my survival.

Structured the events.

Prepared to slip away safely once we reached land.

I clenched my fist.

Gritted my teeth.

Am I truly cursed to never have a good ending?

I closed my eyes.

No.

I refuse.

I refuse that fate.

I dashed to the nearest loaded cannon and lit the fuse.

BOOM!

The cannonball shot across the night sky, smashing into the pirate ship's lower hull.

The crew cheered for a moment—

Until they heard the pirates laughing.

We had not frightened them.

We had angered them.

And with that, the last chance to negotiate vanished.

The crew dropped their weapons, hopelessness settling in like a heavy fog.

One by one, they kneeled.

I simply watched.

---

Boarded

The pirate ship drew close enough to throw thick ropes across.

Pirates swung over, landing on our deck with bloodthirsty grins.

Predators looking at their prey.

Captain Durent Zoulle walked forward, boots thudding on the deck.

Our Captain Quill bowed so low he nearly kissed the floor.

"Please—take all our treasures, all our silver and gold. Just spare our lives!"

Durent Zoulle smiled lazily.

"Sure. Why not."

He pointed a finger.

"Just hand over the brat who fired that cannon… and we'll let the rest of you go."

Every head turned toward where I had been standing.

Except I was gone.

"S–Sir, he was right there! I swear!" Captain Quill pleaded, voice trembling.

The pirates laughed loudly.

"Hide-and-seek time, boys!"

"Bet he's trembling somewhere!"

"Search every damn corner!"

"Drag him out by his hair!"

They dispersed like excited children looking for a toy.

"…Shit."

I was curled inside a wooden barrel in the storage room, trembling as I heard their footsteps approaching.

I'd escaped death once.

But now?

Death was coming for me again.

And this time…

I had no idea how to run.
