Chapter 3 - WELCOME BANQUET

CHAPTER THREE

Lucas eyes scanned the room coldly as he took in the faces of everyone in the room. It reeked of expensive perfumes, too much money and insane hypocrisy.

The men rushed to show off which ever new business deals they had clinched lately, and the next powerful figure they had latched themselves onto.

Although it was said the banquet was arranged for people to relax, they did not forget to do the most important thing, making new business acquaintances and possibly business deals that would be beneficial to both parties.

The women on the other hand, rushed to show off the expensive jewelleries they had on, and who their men were..

Lucas was bored with all of this. He had been seeing this since he was a child, and he knew that although everyone was smiling to everyone's face here, they would not miss an opportunity to stomp on the next person and kick them while they were down.

He didn't like coming to these places, and he really didn't need to. He was the CEO of the JJ Group, and everyone had to give way to him.

This time, there was something that he needed, and so he had to show his face .

That bastard Zain, as soon as he showed his face, Lucas swore that he would teach him a lesson!

He remembered what his assistant had told him before he got here, this was supposed to be a banquet to welcome the daughter of the police chief who had been abroad for years.

Since he wanted a favour from the police chief this time, he had to pretend to be interested in this daughter.

"Mr. Fernandez, I never thought you would show up here. You barely show up at events like this, it's my honour to have you here!"

Lucas heard a vivacious voice say behind him, and he turned sharply to see the police chief, a short stout man in his fifties, approaching him.

A pretty woman followed by his side, a practiced smile on her face.

Lucas had seen that smile too many times. It was the smile that most women in thier circle were taught to have since thier childhood.

That empty smile that suggested they knew nothing at all.

Lucas wondered if there was really something going on in these women's head at all.

"Mr. Norman, you extended an invitation to me, and so of course I have to come. There's no way I could disrespect you like that," Lucas said, a smile on his face.

He was a businessman after all, and although most people thought his job was only staying in a big office all day and making big business decisions, only the people in that situation knew that most of the job was pretending to like the person in front of you.

As a businessman, acting was a skill that had to come in handy.

Like between him and the police chief, Clinton Norman, Lucas was sure that this man wanted him dead, and he personally didn't care much for the police chief, however, they had to pretend to be cordial in a social setting.

"I really thought you wouldn't have the time to come, you know, considering the things going on in your family now. That brother of yours, he's already so old and yet he's still causing so many problems. You all need to stop shielding him so much. The family of the victim keep insisting on justice, and I really want to help out, but we as the police need to make sure that the ordinary people get justice, or else, it would just be sad!"

Clinton slapped Lucas shoulders playfully and laughed as he said this.

He made it sound like he was worried, but Lucas was not an idiot, and neither was Clinton.

Both men could tell the intentions behind those words, and it was just to mock Lucas.

Lucas smiled, he of course, wasn't too mad about this.

"Speaking about this, there is something I'd like to talk to you about, police chief," Lucas said, stepping closer to Lucas as he said this.

The police chief raised an eyebrow, and he smirked.

Lucas smiled once again, between men like them, too many words weren't needed.

Clinton spread out his hands and laughed. "This whole banquet was made for my daughter because I wanted her to be welcomed back to her home after many years abroad. We can always talk tomorrow, just enjoy the banquet today," Clinton said in a jovial tone, his words no longer carrying any hints of mocking.

Since Lucas had showed his face here, then he must have something in his hands.

After all, this was Lucas Fernandez, and his reputation preceded him!

"I think it will be better for you to talk with me, tonight, police chief. By tomorrow, I think I might be too impatient and release what I have in my hands. I think people will be more interested in what you are doing in Italy than my useless brother hitting someone for the fourth time this year," Lucas had a calm look on his face as he said this.

He didn't bother to hide the fact that he was threatening Clinton Norman.

He was a pretty efficient man who didn't like wasting time. Better to get this over with so he could get the fuck out of this place as soon as possible.

Clinton's face was pale when he heard this, and by his side, his daughter was even paler.

She had no idea what was going on, but she knew, whatever it was, it was detrimental to her own father.

She took a peek at Lucas' face. Just like five years ago, he was still as unbothered as ever.

Did he even remember her?

"What do you want?" Clinton snarled at Lucas, dropping all pretences now.

Lucas shook his head, it was his turn to slap Clinton's shoulder playfully.

"You are too impatient, police chief. That's why you keep leaving evidences for people to pick up," he said, shaking his head.

"You...."

"I want you to clear my brother's name, those people lied for money, and they've been trying to extort my family. Do you understand?"
