Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Scheming Ones

"Heh, easy enough to say…"

Shirō Emiya forced an awkward smile. This girl was clearly sizing him up like a long-term investment, planning on making him her little project.

And he wasn't wrong. Yadōmaru Lisa, even at this age, hadn't yet grown into the flamboyant personality she would later be known for, but the seeds of her sly, bookish perversity were already there.

She was still young, had read too many books, and had all the naïve curiosity of someone fascinated with the male body, but without any real experience. She wasn't interested in "adults." People usually gravitate toward those their own age, at least before they grow up.

But in the Seireitei, surrounded by Shinigami who had lived for centuries, Lisa hardly interacted with anyone her own age. That made Shirō Emiya the perfect target.

A moment ago, she had already "studied" his spiritual body, comparing what she saw directly with the anatomy texts in her arms. She'd only been interrupted when he woke up too soon, before she could take her "research" further… things like testing reactions.

Of course, no ordinary person would suspect Yadōmaru Lisa to be such a closet pervert. After all, who would believe such a small, bookish girl had that side to her? Which was precisely why Lisa thought her motives were hidden.

She was already plotting how to trick Shirō, the "naïve boy", into cooperating with her. And given her reserved, scholarly nature, there was no way she'd ever let him know, let alone keep him awake while she carried out her little experiments.

Her plan? Gain his trust, then slip him something to knock him out.

Why was she so confident this would work? Because if even someone as blatantly untrustworthy as Kyōraku Shunsui could lure Shirō out to drink, then surely she, with her serious expression and glasses, would have no problem.

Ah, what a clueless little boy.

At that exact moment,

"Oh, so you're awake already? …Huh. Did I walk in at a bad time? Lisa, just what were you two doing?"

It was Kyōraku's voice.

And indeed, Shirō was curled up in the corner, clutching his clothes to his chest, looking for all the world like someone who had just been assaulted.

Lisa calmly adjusted her glasses and replied,

"I was simply examining his wounds. He woke up during the process. He's probably just embarrassed. My guess is that he's a bit overly sensitive about such things."

Shunsui wasn't sure if he bought that explanation, but shrugged anyway. He turned to Shirō and said,

"Well, you're in luck. Vice-Captain Yamada himself came to fetch you."

He stepped aside, and another man entered, a pale-faced figure with a reputation for a dark, almost sinister disposition. Yamada Kiyosuke, older brother of Hanatarō Yamada and the current Vice-Captain of Squad Four.

"No! I'm not going back to Squad Four!" Shirō screamed reflexively.

Then coughed, quickly correcting himself: "I mean, my wounds are already healed! There's no need for me to return, right?"

Shunsui tilted his hat down, muttering something under his breath.

"I'll take a look myself," Kiyosuke said flatly, approaching Shirō and inspecting his injuries. Shirō didn't resist, he wasn't lying; his body really had recovered quite well.

"Mm. As expected, you've mostly healed. That's Captain Unohana's skill for you," Kiyosuke remarked.

"Y-Yeah! Exactly! Which means I don't need to stay there anymore, right? I can just go home and rest!" Shirō said quickly.

"In theory, yes," Kiyosuke replied calmly. "But Captain Unohana specifically instructed me: no matter what, you are to be returned to Squad Four. Whether you continue your recovery there or not… that's for the Captain to decide."

You've gotta be kidding me! Shirō cursed inwardly. If it's already decided, why bother inspecting me in the first place? Giving me hope only to crush it, what a schemer! So insidious!

Suddenly, it clicked. Of course he was Unohana's vice-captain! The two of them were snakes of the same nest, schemers cut from the same cloth.

Damn it!

Under Kyōraku's half-hearted supervision, Shirō was dragged back once again to Squad Four.

"Shirō Emiya."

Retsu Unohana's voice was calm, yet carried a weight that made him shiver.

"Y-Yes, ma'am!" He snapped to attention, trembling.

"Without my permission, why did you leave Squad Four?" Her tone rose and fell with chilling precision.

"I… I thought I'd recovered enough, so I…" Shirō answered carefully.

"Recovered or not is our judgment, not yours. And leaving without notice is unacceptable." Her voice sharpened.

"I-I only meant to go out for a walk, not to leave entirely…" Shirō backpedaled desperately. The way he flipped his words so quickly was almost shameless, enough to make bystanders blush for him. Not that he realized.

"Is that so? A walk?" Unohana's tone cooled further. "Squad Four's grounds aren't wide enough for your 'walks'?"

"I… I got lost…" Shirō said miserably.

"Fine. I won't pursue that. But explain this, why did you go drinking? At your age, and while still injured, drunk, no less! Do you have any idea how reckless that is?" Unohana's voice cracked like a whip.

"I-It wasn't voluntary!" Shirō blurted, eyes darting.

"Not voluntary?" she repeated.

"Yes! Kyōraku forced me! He said drinking builds character from a young age, insisted I try, and when I refused, he held me down and poured it into me! I couldn't resist, he's a Captain! What could I do?!"

Thus, Shirō happily shifted all the blame onto Kyōraku Shunsui. After all, who would investigate what really happened in a bar? If they didn't look too closely, it'd all fall on Shunsui's shoulders. And considering he really was drinking with Shunsui… well, there was no way the man could escape unscathed this time.
