Chapter 31 - After School

From 3 PM to 8 PM, Midtown High School scheduled extracurricular activities for students.

During these times, students could participate in clubs, sports, and the like.

And for Peter, this meant he was finally…finally done with school! You have no idea how long Peter had waited for this moment.

The second the bell rang, Peter grabbed his textbook, sprinted into the hallway, opened his locker, and pulled out his backpack. He then jumped out the back door, which was usually deserted!

The whole sequence was smooth and practiced.

After all, he'd been doing this for over half a month now, so he was used to it.

As for whether he'd be discovered?

The chances were very, very slim.

Because one of his Spider Abilities was the ability to conceal himself.

Hiding himself was a spider's instinct, and Spider-Man naturally possessed this instinct as well.

This instinct allowed him to find the safest places, transforming from Peter Parker to Spider-Man without being discovered.

After visiting the world of Spider-Man (Noir), this instinct was slightly enhanced, improving his concealment, tracking, and anti-tracking abilities.

If he had his current concealment abilities before, perhaps Iron Man wouldn't have found him so easily.

Well, it was just "not so easily."

In fact, in this age of big data, Iron Man, who possessed super artificial intelligence and the vast information network of The Avengers, would be hard to keep secrets from if he really wanted to find them.

It was just a matter of time and resources invested.

Of course, Iron Man and Peter were now "on the same side," so there wasn't much point in thinking about those things.

After Peter climbed out of school, he, as usual, found an alley to change into the Suit given to him by Iron Man.

Then, he aimed his Web-Shooters at several spots on his backpack and sprayed. He then used a paint pen to color the white webbing.

A backpack of the same style, but with a completely different color scheme, appeared.

Peter immediately put the backpack on.

Previously, he always hid his backpack in the place where he changed, so several times, empty-handed guys who passed by had taken it.

Each time, he had to be thick-skinned and ask Aunt May for another backpack.

So he decided that from now on, he would just be Backpack Spider-Man.

Anyway, he was now a Provisional Avenger. Iron Man had personally told him that his range of activities was between what Iron Man would do and what Iron Man wouldn't do.

A gray area.

It's pretty spiritual, right?

Anyway, Peter just pretended it was.

So, as a Provisional Avenger, as long as he didn't actively expose his identity, The Avengers would only help him cover it up.

"Good afternoon, Peter."

"Hello, Miss Karen." Peter greeted the AI in his Suit.

"Peter, what course are you planning to take today?" Karen asked.

Peter raised his hand, and a list of preset courses appeared on his wrist, all designed to teach him how to be a qualified superhero.

With the thought of "it doesn't hurt to learn," Peter decided to grind these out every day, treating them like daily quests.

"Alright, let's study this today. The scientific method of web-swinging combined with the athletic aesthetics of gymnastics... Seriously, who came up with that course name?" Peter muttered in exasperation.

"It was probably Mr. Stark," Karen replied, throwing her former creator under the bus.

Peter: "…What a naming genius!"

Karen remained silent.

Peter then had Karen activate the receiving device on his Suit, which could tap into the Queens Police Department's radio frequencies. This would allow him to be the first to know about any emergencies and quickly get to the scene.

To Peter's delight, Queens was very peaceful today. He spent from three to five in the afternoon patrolling, and all he ended up doing was helping an old lady cross the street and reuniting a little girl who had gotten separated from her mother with her.

The old lady treated him to a meat pie, and the little girl gave him a chocolate bar.

This made Peter very happy.

It wasn't because he got paid. He didn't help people for the reward.

It was because he felt others' approval.

That was the most important thing.

Peter went back home and ate a simple dinner.

Aunt May's charity event, which seemed to be sponsored by Red Bull, would take several days.

She had prepared some food and money in the refrigerator.

Peter would have to take care of his breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next few days.

Afterward, Peter locked himself in his room to improve his Web-Shooters.

He was preparing to set up two "ammo chambers" on his Web-Shooters. One was for his own webbing – which Peter had named Webbing No. 1 – and the other was for Amazing Spider-Man's webbing, which Peter had named Webbing No. 2.

Webbing No. 1 was more elastic, suitable for capturing criminals, rescuing people, and so on.

Webbing No. 2 was tougher, able to pull vehicles, buildings, and the like.

Normally, he could use both together. Blending the two different types of webbing would create a thicker, stronger web.

However, that would increase consumption.

Considering his webbing reserves, Peter felt this should only be used in emergencies.

As for the Web-Shooters' improvements, it was actually quite simple.

He just needed to add a parallel route to the original components.

Peter finished modifying the Web-Shooters in just an hour.

Next, he took out paper and a pen and began to write down the internal structure of the Pneumatic Electronic Single-Fiber Strength Meter, which he had secretly memorized from school.

His memory was excellent, even stronger after being bitten by the spider and awakening his Spider Abilities.

Soon, he had written down everything he had in his mind.

After that, he would have to reorganize and modify the manual strength meter in his room, which he had pieced together from junk, based on this diagram.

This was a bit more complicated.

Even more complicated than building a new one.

But he couldn't actually build a new one.

It was simple: he was broke.

He was building this thing, first to make it easier to debug his equipment later, and second, to thoroughly research the performance of the webbing so he could talk to Tony Stark about a collaboration!

So, he only had a few dozen dollars on him, which was his food money for the next few days.

He wondered if the Provisional Avenger's salary was paid monthly?

Was it paid at the beginning or the end of the month?

Wait!

Peter suddenly raised his head.

He suddenly remembered something very important.

He had forgotten to ask Tony Stark how much his salary was as a Provisional Avenger!

His Spider-Man Suit was subsidized by the September Foundation, but Tony Stark had said that Avengers like Black Widow had a living allowance!

He's only a trainee, but he should... have something, right?
