Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Leaving Them in the Dust

"Welcome, everyone, to the Tokyo Racecourse! The Horse Girl Debut Race is about to begin!"

"All the horse girls who have trained hard for their debut will now face off in a fierce competition on this track!"

An energetic female voice boomed through the speakers, spreading across the entire Tokyo Racecourse. The sun hanging in the sky seemed to grow even hotter with her commentary.

"I am your commentator, Rin Akasaka."

"And I am the guest commentator, Kentaro Sugimoto."

After Akasaka finished, another steady male voice followed. At the end of their opening remarks, their voices joined together. "We will witness this showdown with you! Come on, race towards the true stage—who will successfully debut?!"

On the track, Celestial Weave's ears perked up. The commentators' voices sounded somewhat familiar. But before she could dwell on it, as contestant number one, she was introduced.

"First up is the first favorite, number one, Celestial Weave, from a prestigious family! As the younger sister of Saint-King Halo, can she avenge her sister's shame from last year?!"

Celestial Weave turned to the audience and gave a gentle wave. In the crowd, Saint-King Halo silently clenched her fist.

Wanting to inherit her mother's "first-class" title, Saint-King Halo, who had always considered herself a first-class horse girl, had suffered a crushing defeat in last year's races. She had only won her debut race and the G3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes. As for the Triple Crown races, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for every horse girl, she had failed to win a single one.

A first-class horse girl without a single G1 victory.

This was a huge blow to Saint-King Halo, who had possessed immense pride since she was young. Although she acted normal in front of her friends and sister, the white marks on her palm from her clenched nails betrayed her frustration.

But, Saint-King Halo glanced at her friends beside her, then at Celestial Weave on the track, and finally relaxed her hand.

She put her hands on her hips and said loudly, "It is merely a temporary setback! My glory is right there, and I will seize it myself!"

"After all, I am a first-class horse girl! Ohohohoho—"

Hearing the familiar laugh, Saint-King Halo's followers skillfully cheered along.

"Next is the second favorite, number two, Admire Vega. Can the rumored aloof genius win the championship today?!"

"And then the third favorite, number three, Narita Top Road. Will her sun-like brilliance turn her fans' cheers into strength for an all-out sprint!"

When their names were called, Admire Vega and Narita Top Road also waved to the stands.

After hearing their introductions, Celestial Weave slowly lowered her hand.

Horse girls with high popularity before a race were usually strong contenders. It seemed her judgment was correct; these two were indeed very strong.

However... Celestial Weave slowly closed her eyes.

She stood quietly, waiting for the commentator to finish the list. When the announcement for the contestants to enter the gates was finally made, she opened her eyes.

In that instant, every perceptive horse girl on the track felt it.

The atmosphere of the Tokyo Racecourse had changed. Even with the bright sun, they couldn't feel a trace of warmth, as if a cold, sharp blade had been drawn behind them. Just standing there, they could feel waves of danger.

As two of the strongest horse girls on the field, Narita Top Road and Admire Vega naturally sensed this as well. In fact, they had already identified the source of this pressure.

Looking at Celestial Weave, Narita Top Road was stunned. She couldn't imagine how the horse girl who had just been chatting and teasing her could transform into a completely different person in a matter of minutes.

Admire Vega's eyes flickered. This strong opponent who had suddenly revealed her edge made the championship, which had seemed within reach, suddenly feel very distant.

"All racers, to your gates!"

Before they could think further, the commentator's announcement rang in their ears.

Despite their unease, Narita Top Road and Admire Vega walked into their respective gates, quietly waiting for the sound of the starting pistol.

BANG!

Soon, with the sound of the gun signaling the start of the race, the gates flew open, and all the horse girls pushed off with all their might.

My form is good, my steps are right! This is a perfect start! Narita Top Road thought, having adjusted her center of gravity perfectly the moment she left the gate.

But while she was still celebrating her successful start, a red streak of light flashed past her like lightning. Before she could even blink a few times, it had left her far behind.

"Eh?"

The contrast made Narita Top Road instinctively doubt herself. Did I mess up the start? Did everyone else just pass me?

She subconsciously looked around, searching for an answer. But what she saw was not an empty track. All the other horse girls looked just like her, staring ahead in a daze.

Everyone was still nearby, which meant she hadn't made a mistake.

Then what was that red light just now?

Thinking of this, Narita Top Road trembled inexplicably. It was as if her instincts had already realized it, but her rational mind stubbornly refused to admit it, as if admitting it would cause something irreversible to happen.

However, her instincts and rational mind didn't have to struggle for long. The commentators, with their broader view of the field, were already eagerly stepping in.

"Number one! Number one Celestial Weave is going for a Great Escape! So fast! She's left everyone behind in an instant! Five horse lengths! Six horse lengths! She's still accelerating!" the energetic female voice exclaimed into the microphone.

Her usually calm partner couldn't maintain his composure either, simply repeating into his microphone, "Can she do it? Can she maintain this speed until the end? Maybe she'll slow down at the turn—"

The audience was in a frenzy. They never expected to see such a bold Great Escape in a debut race. To witness that red light cut through the group of horse girls was worth the price of admission!

In the crowd, Saint-King Halo, surrounded by her cheering followers, blinked in disbelief. She closed her eyes and opened them again, and again. But no matter how many times she blinked, the reality before her remained unchanged.

Her own younger sister, the sister she had always left behind in training, was dominating her debut race in such a manner.

"This is... even more impressive than my debut race..." Saint-King Halo muttered to herself amidst the cheering crowd.
