Chapter 123 - Claire’s Convoy

"Still no leads!"

Jill put away the binoculars and gloomily rolled up the car window.

The two of them had been driving through the desert for four days straight, and they were now nearly three hundred kilometers from Las Vegas.

There was no other way. Circling the city again and again was the only option, and luckily, the area around Las Vegas was mostly desert—no obstacles to slow them down. Otherwise, it wouldn't have taken just four days; it might have taken a month to complete the task.

Staring at sand constantly with binoculars, Jill felt like she was about to develop "sand-blindness"!

Li Qingyuan felt it too—his eyes dry, body aching from driving non-stop for four days, surrounded by nothing but endless sand. If not for his strong mental focus, he would have collapsed long ago.

"We should've hired a couple of people… even just to help with the chores!"

Just thinking about having to cook later made him feel hopeless.

Jill offered to cook, but after Li Qingyuan had tasted her signature dish—instant noodles stewed with chocolate—he decided it was better not to push his luck.

Jill, by all accounts, was goddess-level in both appearance and figure, yet somehow she had trained herself into a true tomboy warrior.

"Regretting it now? Want to go back to the garage? I bet those women are still there. One word from you and they'd all jump on you," Jill teased.

"Are you saying you've reached your limit and want to recruit backup?"

"Nonsense! You've got so little skill; dream on if you think I'd beg!"

"Is that so? Let's see how much skill you really have—dare to talk big now, huh?"

With her level-15 physique, Jill could withstand a lot. An ordinary woman would probably break her pelvis after three days.

"Stop moving! If this continues, I won't be able to walk!" Seeing the sinister smile on her companion's face, Jill quickly surrendered.

"You started this war. Think it can just end here? Never!"

The enemy was quickly overwhelmed, stripped of all defenses, unable to even speak.

After a grueling struggle, Jill Valentin lay on the bed, eyes vacant, feeling like her soul had been hollowed out.

She had no idea how that bastard trained—he was relentless.

Rubbing her numb lips, she dragged herself up and turned on the radio.

Even though the chance was slim, she habitually tuned the broadcast for three hours each day, hoping to find other survivors.

Why not leave it on constantly?

Solar panels provided limited power, and the RV had plenty of other electrical appliances that needed energy.

"This is the Claire Rescue Convoy. Survivors, please head to Las Vegas tomorrow. We will be stationed there for two days!"

After Jill brushed her teeth, a man's voice came over the radio.

"Survivors? Should we contact them?" Jill leaned back on the bed, relaxed, and asked Li Qingyuan.

"Claire Rescue Convoy?" Li Qingyuan muttered, surprised.

Jill had run into Claire, yet Alice remained elusive. That was some bad luck.

Originally, he had planned to follow Alice and take advantage of her efforts—she could single-handedly wipe out the Umbrella Corporation.

It would just take time.

But who knew where Alice was hiding now?

This task would have to be handled personally.

"Let's contact them. At least we can find some help!" Li Qingyuan nodded. He remembered that Claire's convoy had several competent people; their assistance could ease the workload a bit.

"This is the Dawn Squad! Respond if you hear us!"

With his approval, Jill grabbed the radio and began communication.

"This is Claire Rescue… there really are still survivors!"

On the other end, the person transmitting was likely stunned. In this vast desert, meeting another survivor was almost impossible.

"Hello, I'm Claire. How many of you are there, and how many vehicles?" A crisp female voice came over the radio after a few minutes.

"We are the Dawn Squad—just two people and one vehicle," Jill answered casually.

Over the past days, she had realized just how strong Li Qingyuan was. Unless facing the regular army, even a so-called rapid-response team wouldn't be a match for them.

Confidence came from strength, which was why Jill could venture out with just the two of them against the Umbrella Corporation.

"Just two of you? We have 42 people, seven vehicles, and even a fuel tanker. Do you need help?" Claire asked, slightly surprised that the Dawn Squad was so small.

After more than a year in the post-apocalyptic world, survivors tended to band together. Regardless of past grudges, everyone had to fight the undead collectively.

Zombies didn't follow laws—they would bite and devour anything in sight.

"That's a good group! Should we meet them?" Jill asked Li Qingyuan, removing the headset.

Gasoline was precious. Their RV's trunk was nearly full of fuel cans, yet supplies were limited. A fuel tanker was the most valuable asset they could hope for.

"If we meet them now, they might also become targets!" After days of circling Las Vegas, Li Qingyuan knew the Umbrella base—whether Isaac's clone or otherwise—wasn't oblivious.

Even if the guy had been too focused on research, the White Queen wouldn't have missed them.

The convoy hadn't acted yet either because either they didn't want to deal with this hot potato or they were waiting patiently in their stronghold.

"Not needed for now. We have things to handle. If possible, I'll contact you at 7 PM every day on 15250 frequency," Jill replied.

"Miss, our convoy consists of good people. You two are alone and in danger—please trust us," Claire said quickly, fearing the Dawn Squad might feel bullied.

Having led a convoy across the desert, she had seen her share of ruthless individuals, but with skilled team members, all attackers had been repelled.

Otherwise, the Claire Rescue Convoy wouldn't be so rich—they even had two modified heavy-duty trucks.
