"Thirsty…"
Jill Valentine unconsciously murmured, feeling as though she was about to die of thirst.
"You're awake!"
Hearing the stranger's voice, she quickly opened her eyes and tried to roll over, planning to grab her gun—but as soon as she tried to use her waist, a sharp pain shot through her, and before she could stand, she collapsed again.
"Why on earth would you sneak-attack me when you've got nothing better to do?" the man asked gently. Only then did Jill realize she hadn't been captured as she'd feared—she was lying on an old sofa.
Not far in front of her, a man was squatting and heating water.
"You're not from Umbrella Corporation, are you?" Jill lifted her head with what little strength she had, asking cautiously.
"I'd say you're suffering from persecution complex. Luckily, you ran into me—otherwise, you'd be dead for sure!" Li Qingyuan picked up the kettle from the fire, poured a cup of hot water, and brought it to Jill's lips.
Honestly, it was lucky Jill had a hint of a protagonist aura—otherwise, she really would've died.
Her arms were almost completely shredded by the blast, her internal organs shaken violently. Any ordinary person would have been dead even after emergency treatment.
Fortunately, Li Qingyuan had brought some hemostatic spray from the Osborn Corporation, plus a few remedies from dark magic—otherwise, Jill would already be six feet under.
"Sorry! I thought you were Umbrella Corp's pursuers," Jill muttered, feeling wronged. She'd been hunted by Umbrella's special teams for over a year. In the early days, she could still meet a few survivors, but since the T-virus outbreak, she hadn't encountered another living soul for half a year.
So when someone charged toward her hideout, her first instinct was to assume they were Umbrella operatives.
No choice—if she hadn't developed this survival reflex, she would've been captured for experiments long ago.
"That's enough. Take a few sips," Li Qingyuan said, gently lifting Jill's head and holding the cup to her lips after checking the water wouldn't burn her throat.
"Thanks!"
After drinking, Jill's complexion improved slightly, and she regained some energy to look around.
Her rescuer appeared to be of Chinese descent, around twenty-five or twenty-six, and clearly skilled. Jill could feel his strong physique when he helped her—rock-solid abdominal muscles, definitely an expert.
Yet, curiously, his strength didn't seem all that impressive.
With such a solid build, even if not capable of lifting thousands of pounds, surely a few hundred pounds of strength should be easy.
But after that brief contact, Jill felt he was probably weaker than her!
Does this guy never train his arms?
"My name's Li Qingyuan. What's yours?" Though he'd already guessed her identity from her appearance, he asked anyway—just polite.
"Jill… Jill Valentine."
"You thought I was Umbrella Corp, huh? So they're chasing you?" Li Qingyuan had already pieced together the story while Jill was unconscious.
In the Resident Evil games, Jill Valentine is a main character, one of the two most popular female leads alongside Ada Wong.In the movies, however, both of them were overshadowed by Alice, leaving them with barely half her screen time.
No way around it—they didn't have a big-name director husband!
Without Li Qingyuan's intervention, Jill would have been captured by Umbrella Corp's pursuit team and turned into their personal enforcer via mind-control spider device.
"Yes. That's why I think you should leave—if those people discover you're with me, you'll get dragged into trouble," Jill said, her expression slightly darkening.
Over the past year, she had experienced countless life-and-death situations. Anyone who got involved because of her either died or vanished without a trace. That's why she had been hiding alone in this city.
Seeing her loved ones fall into the abyss because of her—even a tough, hardened woman could feel mentally exhausted.
"Given your current state, you won't survive alone for three days," Li Qingyuan said, shaking his head.
Even with medicines and Jill's above-average physical abilities, her injuries were too severe. Without at least half a month of recovery, she wouldn't be able to move freely.
If he abandoned her now, forget Umbrella Corp—just a few zombies sneaking in would likely finish her off.
"We just met by chance. Besides, I attacked you first. You don't need to feel guilty," Jill said stubbornly.
"I'm not feeling guilty. In this situation, it's rare to meet a pretty girl—how could I just let her go?" Li Qingyuan grinned, realizing it was simpler to be straightforward with this feisty woman.
He wasn't some noble hero repaying kindness. The main reason he saved Jill Valentine? She was easy on the eyes.
If it were Li Sanguang or Carlos, he wouldn't care whether they lived or died.
"If you need anything, you can just do it now and leave," Jill said without embarrassment, lying back.
She wasn't a prudish woman. If he really couldn't resist, she'd let it slide—he did save her, after all.
In this world, no one knew if they would see the sun tomorrow, or how many people were left alive.
In such an apocalypse, survival was priority number one. All other so-called morality or virtue could be set aside.
"Forget it, I'm not interested in mummies anyway. Better wait until your wounds heal," Li Qingyuan said, seeing her blank expression, and shook his head with a helpless smile.
Did she really think he was starving?
"My recovery will take at least ten days. Are you sure?" Jill teased with a small smile.
"I'm telling you, you better not tease me right now—or I'll show you what it means to play with fire," he said, lightly tapping her cheek before standing.
"You must have a supplies cache in this building, right? Where is it?"
Food and water were the most precious resources in the apocalypse—even more so than weapons at times.
He could scavenge outside, but if supplies were already here, who'd willingly risk close contact with zombies below?
