"The pursuers are here!"
Hearing explosions from below, Jill Valentine silently began to count her supplies.
One handgun. Thirty-five bullets.
With these, not only would it be nearly impossible to counterattack the elite Umbrella Corporation operatives pursuing her, but even surviving would be a struggle.
She had once been a member of Raccoon City's Special Response Team, one of the first to know about the T-virus outbreak.
Before the Hive incident depicted in the first Resident Evil movie, Jill had already learned about the T-virus through the mansion incident.
The mansion incident involved T-virus-infected lab animals escaping the facility. These creatures attacked humans and were initially classified as serial killings. Jill, as the investigating officer, had handled the case.
Even after all her efforts to eliminate the infected animals and uncover Umbrella's crimes, Jill's reports were thrown away, and she was even suspended.
(This part wasn't depicted in the movies, but from the start of Resident Evil 2, Jill's knowledge of zombies and conversations with other officers implies she knew about the T-virus. Plus, she was officially suspended, which fits the story's continuity.)
When the T-virus fully broke out in Raccoon City, she and survivors like Alice and Carlos barely escaped, sending the footage they had captured online—but it had no effect.
Umbrella used its overwhelming influence to label the disaster a nuclear leak, claiming the footage was forged by Jill and Carlos.
Heroes turned fugitives, constantly evading Umbrella's pursuers while also facing scorn from the public, surviving by hiding for more than three months.
Three months later, when the T-virus spread worldwide, the people who had mocked them now regretted it—but there was no remedy for regret.
In less than a year, the world became a wasteland of the dead. Survivors had to fight for life, and her team was forced to scatter under enemy pursuit.
Who knew what had become of Alice and Carlos now?
Jill pricked up her ears, listening for movement below. Despite the desperate situation, she was determined to take some of Umbrella's dogs down with her.
'Bang!'
Li Qingyuan raised his suitcase and smashed a zombie lying in wait around the staircase corner into a pulp. The suitcase's nanomaterial exterior left no traces.
With his abilities, he wasn't afraid of these trash zombies' sneak attacks—they simply didn't have the power to harm him.
But just as he was about to relax, a sudden sense of danger struck from above.
Without hesitation, Li Qingyuan crouched in a corner, raising the suitcase overhead.
Head-down defense!
'Biu'
A bullet ricocheted harmlessly off the suitcase.
Jill saw that her critical shot had no effect. Without hesitation, she rolled out from her hiding spot, firing while low to the ground.
The suitcase in the enemy's hands was Umbrella's latest equipment. If Jill's speed wasn't fast enough, it could block attacks.
The suitcase was large; once Li Qingyuan crouched behind it, most of his body was protected, only leaving a small exposed area.
But to Jill, even the tiniest exposed gap was enough to attack through.
'Creak… crack!'
To Jill's astonishment, the suitcase suddenly disassembled into a semi-circular shield.
It could only block a 90-degree frontal attack. But with the enemy cornered, it effectively eliminated all blind spots.
Umbrella's newest equipment? No wonder this guy dared pursue her alone.
As Jill pondered how to break the shield, a gap suddenly appeared at the top, releasing a wisp of black mist.
She leaped aside, but the mist seemed intelligent, following her relentlessly.
Front flip 720-degree jump, mid-air spin, firing with zero recoil.
Jill executed a Hollywood-style sequence, blowing the black mist apart in mid-air.
But before she could celebrate, the mist she thought destroyed suddenly exploded.
Her prior attack had consumed 80% of her energy. The mist had looked like a harmless swarm, but it turned out to be Umbrella's latest bio-weapon—explosive.
In the nick of time, she could only cover her head and face with her hands before losing consciousness.

Li Qingyuan, preparing to finish her off, cautiously peeked from behind the shield. He looked at the woman lying nearby, then glanced at the task list.
Had he… just killed the heroine at the start?
Seriously, why did she try to ambush him right away?
Seeing no immediate danger, he lowered the suitcase and pulled out a hemostatic spray.
The woman on the ground still had a pulse, so he decided to save her first.
In this chaotic world, finding a living human was already a rare thing.
And of course, he wasn't saving her just because she was the heroine.
