Maya's POV
"Stop her!"
Selena cut her hand open and pressed it against Luna's huge silver forehead. I screamed.
When they hit, the blood splattered, making a bright flash that threw us all back. A terrible howl filled the cave. It sounded like Luna mixed with something much older.
As I sprang up, my excitement to reach them made my ears ache. Selena was performing in a language unfamiliar to me, while an odd blue glow illuminated her entire form. Selena's touch made the huge dog that had been my daughter thrash and snap, but it couldn't get away from her.
Victor yelled, "She's killing herself!" He tried to move forward but was stopped by an unseen force.
"The magic will drain her completely!" I was sure he was right.
The ritual Selena had prepared needed her full sacrifice, and she was attempting it here, unprepared, in a desperate gamble to save us all.
"Selena, please!" I begged, beating against the invisible barrier. "There has to be another way!"
