I could hear my heartbeat thundering in my ears as my arms fumbled over the gown, clutching it like a lifeline, before I dropped onto the mattress with a desperate tug ignoring those cold stares outside.
God. What the heck just happened?
I didn't know how long I dwelt on those hard thoughts until I lifted my gaze and met that hard stare at the door, the one person I had vowed never to meet again.
"How did you get here?"
"Well, well, well." She laughed, clapping her hands together, eyes glistening with pride and something else I would bet was satisfaction.
"See who we have here, still breathing." Her voice dripped venomously.
My heart drummed with rage, stinging inside me, and I shot to my feet, fists clenched at my sides.
"Why are you here?" I demanded.
"What does it look like I'm doing here?" She rolled her eyes, brows arched sarcastically. "To check on you, of course. To be really sure you're still hanging on."
