Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: FIRST DAY AT HOWARDS

As James drove through the winding streets of Morgansville's suburbs, he admired the picturesque landscape. He navigated the black Ford jeep through the quiet neighborhood, the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling in the gentle breeze filling the air. James couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as he took in the sights of the beautiful city. Many of the buildings he drove past were emblazoned with the B-Industries logo, a testament to his father's successful business empire.

The Goodman Residence came into view, a stunning mansion that exuded elegance and sophistication. The driveway wound its way through beautifully manicured gardens, complete with a small waterfall that cascaded into a serene pond. James couldn't help but feel a sense of serenity every time he visited Lara's home.

He pulled up to the entrance, honking the horn to announce his arrival. Almost immediately, the front door swung open, and Lara rushed out, her blonde hair bouncing with each step. She looked stunning in the blue dress James had chosen earlier, the color accentuating her bright blue eyes and radiant complexion.

As Lara slid into the passenger seat, James couldn't help but stare. "Wow, you look amazing," he said, his voice sincere.

Lara smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Thanks, James. Charming as usual. I'm glad you like the dress. I was thinking of wearing the orange one, but I'm glad I took your advice."

James grinned, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "I'm always happy to help. So, how was your trip to France? You said you guys visited Paris and the French Riviera."

Lara launched into a detailed account of her travels, mentioning famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. "And then we went to the French Riviera, where we spent a week soaking up the sun and swimming in the Mediterranean. It was absolutely incredible."

James listened intently, feeling a pang of jealousy. He had spent his summer cooped up in boardrooms, listening to his father drone on about business deals. "That sounds amazing. I'm so jealous. I've always wanted to visit the French Riviera."

As Lara finished her story, she turned to James with a mischievous glint in her eye. "Did you get in touch with Megan or Katie over the break? I feel like I haven't seen them in ages."

James shook his head, feeling a twinge of guilt. "No, I didn't. I've been pretty busy with my dad's business stuff. But I'm sure we'll all catch up soon."

Lara raised an eyebrow. "Business stuff? What kind of business stuff?"

James hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "Just the usual. My dad's been trying to get me more involved in the company, so I've been attending a lot of meetings and learning about the different aspects of the business."

Lara's expression softened, and she reached out to touch his arm. "I'm sorry, James. I know things have been tough with your dad lately. But it's good that you're taking an interest in the business. Maybe it'll bring you and your dad closer together."

James shrugged, trying to brush off the concern. "I don't know. I hope so. But it's hard when we don't see eye to eye on things."

Lara nodded, her eyes sparkling with understanding. "I know exactly what you mean. So, how's Kevin doing? You've spoken to him lately? I believe he never toured in France."

James' expression faltered, and he hesitated before answering. "Yeah, he's still doing his thing. Last time I texted, he was in Manchester. I'm happy for him, you know, but...it's complicated. My dad and Kevin are still at odds."

Lara's face filled with empathy, and she reached out to take James' hand. "I'm so sorry, James. That must be really tough for you."

James felt a lump form in his throat as he looked at Lara. She always knew exactly what to say to make him feel better.

"Thanks, Lara," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Just talking to you makes me feel better."

Lara smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. "That's what friends are for, James. Now, come on, let's focus on the positive. It's our last year of high school! We have to make it count."

As Lara spoke, James pulled up to the intersection of Oakwood Drive and Maple Street, the heart of Morgansville's bustling downtown area. The streets were lined with trendy boutiques, restaurants, and cafes, all bearing the unmistakable mark of his father's B-Industries.

James couldn't help but feel a sense of pride as he took in the sights of the thriving city. His father's business empire had played a significant role in shaping Morgansville into the prosperous and vibrant community it was today.

James couldn't help but smile as he pulled into the parking lot of Howard High. The prestigious private school loomed before them, its imposing structure a reminder of the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.

"Here we go," James said, feeling a sense of trepidation mixed with excitement, as he parked the Ford.

Lara grinned, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Let's do this!" She said and opened the door.

As James and Lara stepped out of the car, they were immediately surrounded by the sounds of laughter and chatter. Lara's friends, Megan and Katie, rushed over to greet her, exchanging warm hugs and compliments.

Megan, a slim and beautiful brunette, grinned mischievously at Lara. "Oh my God, Lara, you look amazing! I love that dress."

Katie, with her blonde curls bouncing with each step, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you're totally rocking that blue dress."

Lara blushed, looking pleased with herself. "Thanks, guys. I was thinking of wearing the orange one I told you about during the summer, but James convinced me to go with this one."

Megan's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Well, James has good taste, I'll give him that. But seriously, Lara, what's with the new...ahem...assets?" Megan asked, making a suggestive gesture with her hands.

Lara's face turned bright red as James interrupted, "Hey, hey, I'm still standing here, you know."

The girls burst out laughing, and Megan grinned at James. "Sorry, James. We didn't mean to make you blush."

Katie, still chuckling, turned to James and smiled. "Hey, James. How was your summer?"

Before James could respond, a tall, lanky figure with long, curly dark hair jumped onto his back, nearly knocking him off balance.

"Whoa, easy there!" James laughed, spinning around to face his attacker.

Chris Pidgeley, his best friend and fellow basketball player, grinned at him, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "What's up, man? Ready to take on the new school year?"

James chuckled, clapping Chris on the back. "Take it easy, Chris. I'm not sure I'm ready for your level of enthusiasm."

Chris winked at the girls, who were watching the exchange with amusement. "Hey, ladies. You all look lovely today. Especially you, Lara. That dress is stunning."

Lara blushed, smiling at Chris. "Thanks, Chris. Glad the summer hasn't erased your flirting abilities."

James rolled his eyes and sighed. "Yeah, Chris is a total ladies' man."

Chris grinned, unfazed. "Hey, someone's got to keep the ladies entertained."

As they strolled from the parking lot into the school grounds, they were greeted by familiar faces and friendly smiles. The atmosphere was lively, with students chatting and laughing as they made their way to their lockers or classrooms.

James' feelings of angst and excitement remained as he walked alongside his friends. This was their senior year, and he knew it was going to be one to remember. In some sense.

As they approached the school entrance, Chris turned to James and grinned again. "You ready to rumble, man?"

James chuckled, shaking his head. "Take it easy, Chris. Let's just get through the first day without any major disasters."

Chris winked at him. "Aww, come on, James. Where's your sense of adventure?"
