Chapter 5 - Above all.

He opened his eyes, and a wave of relief washed over him. He was in a field again, a vast expanse with no path in sight. Not the glade, but a new landscape. The tranquil atmosphere was a welcome change, and his mind began to replay RH's last words: "It only gets more dangerous every fold, in the most unexpected way." He wondered if this fold would be an exception, if the peacefulness would hold. As he walked, the silence was almost deafening. His footsteps echoed through the emptiness, and he started to feel the flow of time with each step. His body didn't seem to be aging, but his mind was confused about how much time had passed. He looked forward, and the endless expanse stretched out before him, a sea of nothingness that seemed to swallow him whole.

Something nagged at his mind, a thought that refused to coalesce. RH had said something that didn't make sense, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. The thought danced just out of reach, frustrating him. He tried to grasp it, to hold onto it, but it slipped away like sand between his fingers. He fell to the ground and sat, hoping to rest his back against the earth. But instead of the soft give of the ground, his back met a firm resistance. Startled, he slowly got to his feet and turned to face what was behind him.

A small building stood there, its height barely that of an average man, and its size was no larger than a small box. The door was open, and from the outside, it seemed to lead to nowhere but a wall. The building seemed out of place, a tiny anomaly in the vast expanse. Curiosity got the better of him, and he decided to step inside. As he entered, there was just the wall of the building, and nothing else. The air was thick with an unsettling silence.

The door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing through the tiny space like a crack of thunder. He spun around, his heart racing, and that's when he saw it. The door was gone, replaced by a wall, and a hallway stretched out before him, seemingly endless. The sudden change was disorienting, and he stumbled forward, his eyes fixed on the hallway. It seemed to stretch on forever, a tunnel of darkness and uncertainty. He took a deep breath and began to walk, his footsteps echoing off the walls, the only sound in the oppressive silence.

His breath started becoming irregular, and he was almost frightened out of his mind. Fear was consuming him with each step, his heart racing like a jackhammer in his chest. He walked down the hallway, his footsteps echoing off the walls, the silence swallowing the sound whole. The hallway seemed to stretch on forever, and he felt like he was walking into the abyss. Every step felt like a journey into the unknown, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.

As he walked, the hallway seemed to shift and distort around him, like a funhouse mirror reflecting his deepest fears. He quickened his pace, his anxiety growing with each step. But no matter how fast he walked, the end of the hallway seemed to stay just out of reach. He felt like he was trapped in a never-ending nightmare, with no escape from the oppressive atmosphere.

And then, suddenly, the hallway shortened, and he came face to face with a stairway almost instantaneously. He looked around, his mind still reeling from the sudden change. The stairway loomed before him, a narrow and winding path that seemed to disappear into the darkness above. He climbed the stairs, his legs trembling beneath him. The stairs were rather normal, the only thing that seemed to have an end in this bizarre place. As he reached the top, there was nothing beyond that, just a platform and then nothing.

He approached the platform cautiously, his eyes scanning the area. And then he stared down, his gaze plummeting into the depths below. The image was like different buildings, a jumbled mess of architecture that made no sense. The structures seemed to defy gravity, twisting and turning in impossible ways. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him as he gazed out at the surreal landscape. Questions swirled in his mind, but he had no answers. All he could do was stand there, frozen in awe and terror, staring out at the impossible world below.

He could see some of the buildings were lit up, and seemed to have shadows moving around them. He thought it was possibly other people, and a spark of hope ignited within him. Maybe he wasn't alone after all. Maybe there were others who could help him make sense of this place. He strained his eyes, trying to get a better look at the figures below. But as he gazed out at the surreal landscape, he was struck by a sense of unease. The buildings seemed to stretch on forever, a maze of impossible geometry that defied understanding.

He couldn't reach the buildings, and the thought of falling sent a shiver down his spine. A fall from there would mean...he had no idea what would happen. The uncertainty was suffocating, a crushing weight that pressed down on him. He didn't know if he'd be hurt, or if he'd simply disappear. Maybe he'd be transported to another fold, or maybe he'd be trapped in some kind of limbo. The possibilities were endless, and none of them seemed reassuring.

The fear was primal, a deep-seated instinct that warned him of the dangers of falling. He took a step back from the edge, his heart racing with anxiety. His mind was a jumble of worst-case scenarios, each one more terrifying than the last. He didn't know what lay below, and the not knowing was what terrified him the most. He was trapped in a world of uncertainty, where the rules seemed to change without warning. And he was determined not to find out what would happen if he fell. Not yet, at least. Not until he had to. The thought of taking that risk was too much to bear, and he turned away from the edge, his eyes scanning the platform for any sign of a way out.

As he tried to back away from the platform, heading towards the stairs, he heard a sudden snapping sound, like someone snapping their fingers. The sound was sharp and abrupt, and it seemed to echo through the air. And then, in an instant, the stairs were gone. The platform now lay afloat over what seemed like an endless fall, with irregular architecture stretching out into the void. The buildings below looked like a twisted puzzle, with no discernible pattern or logic.

The platform was tiny, barely large enough for him to stand on, and certainly not big enough for him to sit comfortably. He felt a wave of panic wash over him as he realized he was completely isolated, with no way to get back to solid ground. The platform seemed to be suspended in mid-air, with no visible means of support. He looked around, his eyes scanning the area frantically, but there was nothing. No stairs, no ladder, no way down. Just the platform, floating in the void.

He stood frozen, his heart pounding in his chest. The silence was oppressive, and the only sound was the faint creaking of the platform beneath his feet. He didn't dare move, didn't dare breathe. The thought of falling was all-consuming, and he felt like he was teetering on the edge of disaster. One wrong move, and he would plummet into the unknown. The suspense was suffocating, and he was trapped in a living nightmare.
