Chapter 4 - The Blade of Searing.

"It's here." Lucan said, gripping the handle of his sword.

"What's here?" Though, before Lucan could reply, Kaelren was grabbed by the back of his shirt, and pulled back.

SLASH.

Kaelren looked back, his heart pounding. It was.. some sort of monster? It had attacked him and Lucan had saved him, for some odd reason.

'What is that thing?!?!' Kaelren's eyes widened, looking over the creature.

That thing was not a human. Lucan let go of Kaelren, and lunged forward. Kaelren's eyes widened, watching Lucan defend him. Not because Kaelren was surprised by his actions— But because of his skills.

Lucan fought like a real seasoned warrior. Kaelren's eyes were glued to the blonde, watching him slash and slice into the monster's skin.

It wasn't too big— But definitely bigger than a human. The monster fell, starting to dissipate into thin air. Kaelren stood there, watching.

"If you're sticking with me, at least make yourself useful." Lucan said, sighing.

"That was only a low level monster."

'What low level? Is this some sort of video game or what?' Kaelren sighed softly.

"Why are you protecting me?"

"Well I've tried killing you," Lucan turned to Kaelren. "You seem like you have potential."

Kaelren's eyes widened slightly. Did he hear Lucan right? Potential? Him? Kaelren couldn't believe he had actually said that.

"Don't take it to heart." Lucan added, not wanting to sound soft.

Kaelren didn't speak. He just nodded.

"Let's go." Lucan turned around, starting to walk. Kaelren did not follow after him.

His eyes caught something. Shiny, reflecting the sunlight. It laid beside the prior killed momster.. which was dissipating. It was.. beaming. He curiously walked closer, one in the blood of the monster.

'Eugh… I am not touching that stuff.' Kaelren scrunched his eyebrows in disgust. He took a nearby scrap of metal, taking it out of the pool of blood. He picked it up. It was another fragment.

< You have obtained a fragment of the series 'Blade of Searing'! 2/7! >

Kaelren's eyes narrowed. A fragment. He picked up another one, that happened to lay under the scrap piece of metal he took.

< You have obtained a fragment of the series 'Blade of Searing'! 3/7! >

Kaelren placed them inside his pocket.. they were a little sharp, but he'd deal with it for now.

He turned around, walking back to Lucan.

[ "You need to get weapons, Kaelren. You are unarmed." ]

Kaelren jumped a little, now walking behind Lucan.

'Can you be any more startling?' Kaelren let out an exhale.

[ "You'll get used to it." ]

'About the weapons part, I've been meaning to ask. What is.. 'Blade of Searing'?'

Kaelren could feel Covis stop entirely. Whatever it was that he was doing, he could feel him stop.

[ "What did you say?" ] Suddenly, Covis' voice turned serious. More serious than he'd expect out of.. only saying random words that he's never heard of.

'I said,'Blade of Searing'...' Kaelren thought to Covis, confused.

[ "What?!" ] Covis yelled.. in Kaleren's head.

'What? Did I say something wrong?'

[ "No, Kaelren. You did something wrong." ] Covis explained. He sounded seething.

'What? Wh.. what do you mean??'

[ "You've messed up. I have to go." ]

Kaelren did not bother replying, knowing that Covis wouldn't hear it anyway.

"Hey. If you keep spacing out you'll walk straight into those puddles." Lucan spoke, snapping Kaelren back into reality.

"O-oh.." Kaelren sighed, running a hand through his navy blue hair.

"...Did you dye your hair?"

"No.. why do you ask?"

Lucan turned to meet Kaelren's gaze, before looking back. "Why do I ask? Because you have Navy blue hair and White in your hair."

Lucan responded, his hands resting in his pockets.

"Oh.. I guess it's not normal? I have a friend with green hair on earth.." Kaleren stated quietly, walking beside Lucan.

"...You don't fail to surprise me." Lucan stated. "Why don't we rest up there?"

Lucan suggested, pointing with his sword over to a building. Kaelren didn't object.

They both walked inside, the place was oddly clean, compared to the other buildings he'd seen before.

He took a look around, before settling down on the floor, leaning against the wall.

Lucan sheathed his sword, putting a respectable distance between them, sitting down as well.

Kaelren hadn't realized how exhausted he was until he rested his eyes. The earlier adrenaline hadn't helped, considering he hadn't felt any fatigue. Not to mention attaining two new skills.

Kaleren swore he was just a courier yesterday. All of this was so new to him, it all felt like a dream. Not.. Particularly good or bad, though. Skills? Narratives? Telepathy? He didn't believe such was real. Portals? Magic? He refused to believe the former. The latter was more believable.

Lucan glanced at the man beside him, already dozing off. He scoffed, though it didn't hide the small smile that played on his lips.

"Who are you?" Loiren pointed his sword to the throat of the unidentified male in front of him.

"I'm— I.." Kaelren stuttered, not used to being threatened.. Well, he supposed he'd have to get used to it sooner or later, especially in this world.

He held his hands up in surrender.

"Answer." The cold tip of the blade pressed against Kaelren's neck, and he froze.

"Im.. My name is Kaelren.." He finally managed to utter.

"Kaelren? I've never heard of you." Coldly, replied Loiren.

"I'll ask you again. Who. Are. you."

Loiren repeated coldly.

Kaelren raised an eyebrow, but didn't dare saying anything sarcastic.

"Is there a correct answer..?"

"The truth."

"... I'm Kaelren. That's the truth." Kaelren tested the limits, yet he tried remaining calm.

"...Where are you from?" asked the male.

Kealren hesitated for a moment. "Earth.."

"Earth..?" Loiren's eyes widened, then narrowed in suspicion.

"I've heard myths of that god forsaken place.."

Kaelrens was suddenly more intrigued than intimidated. "Myths..? No, it's quite real. Im.. right here as proof."

"Real..? Then what are you doing in Nekropolis, nonetheless in Ervillian city?" He asked, slightly lowering his sword. But he didn't sheathe it. He kept wariness.

"..It's really complicated to explain." Kaelren replied, sighing softly.

"...Come with me." Loiren said, already walking.

Kaelren followed behind, being led to a tiny hut nearby. There wasn't anyone inside, only a sparking fire amidst the gloomy sky.

'How the hell did I end up here? Wasn't I just with Lucan?..' Kaelren sat down, as gestured by the redhead.

"Well… care to explain how you got here if you really are from earth?" Loiren requested, though it sounded more like a demand.

"Like I said… It's really complicated."

"I have time."

Kaelren sighed.

"Well.. It wasn't anything odd until just a few days ago. I heard.. a voice in my head. And not like, 'oh your conscience', A literal nother voice." Kealren explained.

"Not to mention, that guy was.. annoying as hell."

"And going home from work.. Some weird stuff happened.. like I could see my future. It was really weird."

"Having said that, I… that night I went to sleep.. and when I woke up.. I was already in Nekropolis."

"So.. you're saying that you just.. appeared here out of nowhere?" Loiren asked, summarizing the male's explanation.

"Yeah.. I know it sounds really.. unbelievable. But if you choose to regard my story as true, believe me I'm not lying."

Loiren let out a sharp exhale. "Boy, you seem like trouble." He glanced at Kaelren.

"But.. you seem to have much potential too." Loiren added lastly.

Kaelren slowly opened his eyes, feeling completely refreshed and energized. 'Odd..' Kaelren thought.

"Finally awake?" Lucan said, He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, one leg bent back on the wall. He looked down at the man still on the ground.

"...what? How long was I out for?" Kaelren asked.

"4 hours." Lucan responded.

"You waited?" Kaelren asked, as if it wasn't obvious. Though he was mostly asking for the reason.

"I hope it wasn't obvious." Lucan rolled his eyes.

"We should get going." Lucan added.

"Where.. are we going to go?" Kaelren asked, standing up, stretching his arms.

"...My boss."

"Boss..?"

"Yes."

Kaelren raised an eyebrow, staying silent for a moment.

"...Okay?"

Kaelren yawned, before spotting a blade on the ground next to his foot.

"That's for you. You can't keep roaming around unarmed." Lucan stated, already walking out of the building.

Kaelren stared at it for a moment, before picking it up, muttering a quiet "Thanks..".

He followed behind Lucan, adjusted the sword scabbard belt around his hip.

"Just don't cut yourself trying to fight a monster," Lucan smirked slightly.

Kealren rolled his eyes. "As if.."

Kealren then came to remember his.. dream as he progressed further with Lucan. Loiren? Who's that? Kaelren had heard of myths, and the Ervyll species. But they were all stories told to him by his mother when he was young. He never.. believed it.

Not to mention, now, he couldn't remember what happened after Kaelren explained his situation to Loiren.

Kaelren sighed. He tried instead to focus on something else.

Kaelren noticed something. His keen eyes fell on the sky, the sun still in the middle, not beaming, it was quite cloudy.

the man's eyes widened slightly.

"...The sun hasn't moved." He muttered quietly.

[ "You've noticed." ]

'Yes, I have. Why..? it should be at least setting by now.'

[ "Well, Nekropolis is different. The sun doesn't set. The sky only gets dark with rain clouds— the night sky never shows itself." ] Covis popped in Kaelren's head.

[ "But, there's one night every month where the sun sets." ]

'Interesting.. How do you know the time.. you know, sunrise.. morning, midday, afternoon.. evening.. night, midnight.. nonetheless when a new month starts?'

[ "Simply, you don't. Species that live on Nekropolis have grown used to it. As for months, it's mostly done in estimation. I know it sounds absurd to you, a human, but it'll.. make sense later on." ]

Covis sighed internally in Kaelren's head. [ "With that said, good luck." ]
