The wind was sharp and hot against their faces as they flew over the broken ridges.
Faizi Tian's golden flames lit their path, Elder Yao's sacred fire burned steady beside him, and Elder Ren's emerald serpent-flame flickered silently at the rear.
Faizi's gaze shifted toward Ren.
"You've fought alongside us before, but I've never heard your story. Who exactly are you?"
Ren's expression didn't change — but deep in his eyes, an old memory stirred.

Flashback – The Rise and Fall of Ren Zhaotian
His name was Ren Zhaotian, born of the once-proud Ren Clan — a lineage that had ruled the eastern stretches of the Central Flame Continent for centuries.
At its height, the Ren Clan's flames could turn rivers to steam and carve valleys through mountains.
But power fades, and so too did the clan's glory.
When Zhaotian was a youth, the Ren Clan became vassals of the Azure Serpent Flame Sect, a neutral sect renowned for its serpent-shaped flames — and once, an ally to the ancestors of Faizi Tian's sect.
By sheer talent, Zhaotian rose quickly through the ranks, mastering the sect's sacred serpent flame.
He became an Outer Council Elder, entrusted with guarding the sect's borders and training its younger disciples.
But the Demon War changed everything.
The Azure Serpent Flame Sect emerged weakened, their numbers cut in half, their influence fading.
In desperation, the sect leaders forged a secret pact with a forbidden power — the Abyss Flame Monarch.
Zhaotian was chosen to serve as the pact's living blade.

The Hidden Allegiance
Through a dark ritual, he was gifted Dual Flame Control — the ability to wield both pure fire and a sinister, abyssal flame.
The abyssal fire whispered to him, its heat tasting of hunger, its light carrying the chill of endless night.
Outwardly, he remained the calm, disciplined Elder Ren.
Inwardly, he carried the will of the Abyss Flame Monarch.
When the Abyss's agents detected a stir in the Demon Seal — the very same ancient seal Faizi Tian now guarded — Ren was sent under the guise of "allied assistance."
His true mission: study the seal's position, test its defenses, and report its weaknesses to his hidden master.

Return to the Present
The flashback faded.
Ren's eyes met Faizi's for a brief moment — calm, unreadable.
"I am only a man who's seen too many battles, Sect Master. Let us focus on the seal," he said quietly.
Faizi didn't press further, but Elder Yao glanced between them, suspicion flickering in his gaze.
Far ahead, the mountain split with a deafening roar, the Demon Seal's light faltering.
The ground cracked open, spewing rivers of molten black fire into the sky.
The three landed at the base of the seal — and in the shadows, while Faizi and Yao prepared their flames, Ren's sleeve shifted slightly.
Hidden beneath the fabric, a black crystal pulsed once… twice… in answer to a voice only he could hear.
> "The seal weakens. Soon… we claim it."
Ren's eyes narrowed, half in shadow, half in flame.
