Lin Rouxi pulled Ye Chen out of the female dormitory and down to the street.
"Ye Chen, let's just take a taxi," she suggested, planning to head to her mother's place.
Ye Chen shook his head. "No need, Teacher Lin. I brought a car — let's go in mine."
"Oh? Alright." She followed him toward the school's parking lot, which was filled with the cars of wealthy students living in the male dorms.
Ye Chen walked straight toward one of the most eye-catching vehicles there — a sleek silver sports car. Pressing a button on the remote, the doors unlocked with a soft click.
Lin Rouxi froze. She could hardly believe what she was seeing. According to the student profile she had received from the headmaster when Ye Chen transferred, his background was that of an ordinary family. He lived alone in this city without any relatives. Yet here he was, opening a luxury sports car that cost more than most people's houses.
"Ye Chen… is this really your car?" she asked, still in disbelief.
"Yes," he replied casually. "I just got it today — from a sale."
She narrowed her eyes. "And what exactly do you do for work that lets you buy something like this?"
"Selling fruit," Ye Chen said honestly.
"… -_-"
Who in their right mind would believe a fruit seller could afford a car like this? But Ye Chen wasn't lying — his wealth came from selling Heaven's Peaches, though there was no way Lin Rouxi could imagine that.
"Ah, forget it," she sighed. "Let's go. My mother must be waiting."
They got into the car, and Ye Chen drove off toward the hotel where her mother was staying.
The road was busy, but Ye Chen's car surged forward, easily hitting 150 km/h. Lin Rouxi's hands tightened around the seatbelt.
"Ye Chen! Slow down! Drive normally," she scolded.
With a helpless smile, he eased off the accelerator, and the tension in her shoulders finally faded.
The hotel was only about ten kilometers from the dorm. During the drive, Lin Rouxi gave Ye Chen a crash course on what to say and how to behave in front of her mother so their "relationship" wouldn't be exposed.
About ten minutes later, they were almost there when Lin Rouxi's phone rang. After a short conversation, she hung up.
"Change of plans," she said. "My mother's at a restaurant a few kilometers from here. She wants to meet there instead."
"Got it," Ye Chen said, following her directions.
A few minutes later, they arrived at a fast-food restaurant. It wasn't fancy, but it was busy. Ye Chen parked, and they stepped out together.
"Remember," Lin Rouxi whispered, "we have to look like we're really a couple."
"Of course, Rouxi dear," Ye Chen said smoothly.
The word dear made her cheeks turn pink. She wasn't used to being called that.
To complete the act, Lin Rouxi slipped her hand through his arm as they walked inside.
They soon spotted her mother, seated at a table — but there was also a young man beside her, about Lin Rouxi's age, dressed in a neat black suit.
"Rouxi, you're here. Come, sit," her mother said warmly.
Ye Chen and Lin Rouxi sat together, her hand still hooked around his arm.
Her mother's eyes swept over Ye Chen from head to toe. His clothes were simple, but his tall build and handsome face fit the type she knew her daughter liked.
"Mother, this is my boyfriend, Ye Chen. Ye Chen, this is my mother, Sui Xi," Lin Rouxi introduced them.
"Hello, Auntie. Nice to meet you," Ye Chen said politely, extending his hand.
Sui Xi smiled and shook it. "And this," she continued, turning to the man beside her, "is Hu Jun, the son of my best friend from my university days. Hu Jun, this is my daughter, Lin Rouxi."
"Hello, I'm Hu Jun," he said, offering his hand to Lin Rouxi.
She had no desire to shake it, but for the sake of her mother's face, she did so quickly, withdrawing her hand as soon as possible.
"Since we're all here, let's order first," Sui Xi said, calling over a waiter and ordering several dishes.
While they waited, Sui Xi began asking about Ye Chen and Lin Rouxi's relationship. Lin Rouxi worried Ye Chen might say something wrong, but he answered smoothly, matching the story they had agreed on.
"Oh, Ye Chen, what do you do for work?" her mother asked.
"I sell peaches," Ye Chen replied honestly.
Fortunately, Sui Xi didn't seem to mind. But Hu Jun, sitting across from them, smirked in open disdain.
"Hah! Just a fruit seller? How much could you possibly make each month? Can you even afford to support yourself and Lin Rouxi?" he mocked.
"The income I have is more than enough for us," Ye Chen replied calmly, not rising to the bait. In truth, the profits from Heaven's Peaches reached millions per day.
Lin Rouxi's eyes narrowed at Hu Jun. "So what if he sells fruit? As long as Ye Chen makes me happy, nothing else matters."
Hu Jun hadn't expected her to defend Ye Chen so strongly. His smug expression faltered.
Sui Xi quickly changed the topic. "Hu Jun, what about you? Where are you working now?"
"Auntie, I'm the general manager at my father's company. I earn eighty thousand dollars a month," Hu Jun boasted.
"That's impressive," Sui Xi said with a nod.
In truth, she was quietly observing both men. Ye Chen was calm, polite, and not easily provoked. Hu Jun, on the other hand, was arrogant — but he did have the wealth to back it up. Still, money wasn't the only thing that mattered in a man.
