Chapter 1 - The Heretic

It was like any other day, wake up, eat breakfast and then howl at the moon.

You may think that makes me a furry. I'm here to astutely tell you that you're wrong, the only furries in my household are kept in cages in the basement and I don't sleep there, as of yet.

I walked downstairs to greet my sister who loves me so, "Fucking heretic! What do you want, you already renounced the savior! I don't know why our parents still protect you. Your existence is not only useless to the town, settlement and city but a calamity to us as well. Why can't you seem to understand that!?" she commented happily.

"Wow. I'm sorry you feel that way." I assured her wholeheartedly.

She looked at me with red eyes and like she wanted to give a hug. I was just concerned that the hug might be a bit too tight and possibly around my neck area. You see, my sister has never learned how to properly hug me. Sadly, she seems to be born mentally impaired in that department. I would like for all of us to take a moment of silence in pity of my unfortunate sister.

You take that silence? Well, I'm thankful if you did, but I don't really care if you didn't. People often care so much about the most insignificant thing, like my sister being upset that I never called her by her name. Like, it's not that big of a deal.

I headed out to school, hoping to get there alive. Each step I took on the cobblestone streets echoed in the darkness.

If these street lamps ever all went out at once, I'd truly be lost.

After a while of trekking through aprehension and cobbled darkness, I eventually arrived at the school ground and attended class. Shortly after the arrival time period, we went through the motions.

"The Mirror of the Night Sky,

I pledge my loyalty to your venerable existence,

May the gates of your gradient stay open forevermore,

Oh, hallowed moon."

These motions made me sick, ever since I disowned the moon. So I didn't say anything or didn't make any motions, which got me in a bit of trouble.

Luna High School, basement, detention center

"There was a rumor that the eldest son of the Calypses family, a family at the head of the local inquisition, was a blasphemer. Now, the Calypses family is a famous family in Luna's Town, there are many who covet their position and so I treated as such, just a rumor. That being said, I cannot ignore this Mathias, yet for the sake of the name of the Calypses family and all it's associated parties, I can lighten your sentence."

I looked up from my wooden chair and spoke to my detainer, "I would unforsake the moon, but for that to happen, I need for her to actually be all she claims to be." I said

Smack!

My beautiful face was struck by the dean cosplaying as an interrogator, if he lost his shirt, wore a woolen mask and maybe by some miracle gained the ability to grow body hair, he might actually pass for one.

He looked disgusted with me, like he only half-believed the rumors of my 'heresy' before.

After I was struck I was moved from the chair and walked through a collection of black-bricked tunnels and thrown in a dark metal cell.

"When you die blasphemer, pray that the gradient gates open for heathens like you." the fake interrogator spat.

That was surprisingly light, it seems that father's influence on my proceedings was greater then even I imagined.

I just hope that they don't 'accidentally' forget to feed me for multiple weeks or something.

The cell was cold, dark and damp. No light shining from anywhere at all.

I sighed, It was going to be a long rest of my life.

Shit. I didn't think Luna actually gave them sorcery.

Disguised it as holy power as well, quite a clever omnipresent god.

A few days ago I found the 'ruinous' book of sorcery while exploring an old waterfall near Luna's town.

I read through it all although it's all just one repeating page.

I smuggled it home not knowing truly what it was thinking most of it was a joke, until I tried some of the 'sorceries' it described.

They actually worked! I attempted many experiments in those short days and eventually a new page opened up to me, on what Luna really was.

After that I couldn't go back. I first stopped praying, I admit not the smartest idea in a town full of fanatics, but some things are more important than cold logic. Principles. I just couldn't pray to that thing anymore.

Moving back to the sorcery,

I was ecstatic! I needed to know more, to do more. But some certain coincidences led back to me and through those coincidences and my repeated lack of prayer unbefitting my status and usual routine, they ordered an actual investigation and what they found probably shocked them, my father most of all.

I'm beginning to think that was why he was so quiet last family dinner. He probably knew then.

Clang! Click! Clang!

The door opened with dim but blinding light.

It was my father, accompanied by the dean.

"Mathias." He said

"Yes father?" I responded

"The book, where did you hide it." He asked, sounding detached.

"How did you know it was a book?" I asked quizzically.

"Son, the goddess's mirror reflects all." He said assuredly

I sighed, "I don't even know where it is now, I used a primed sorcery to teleport it to a random location if my sorcery were ever to be sealed or suppressed." I said, slightly sadly

My father's eyes gleamed with an unnatural silver sheen, "He's not lying." My dad said.

The duo then nodded, handed me my food and drink and then left the dark prison room, slamming the grating metal door behind them.

That's cute. If a goddess such as the mirror of the night sky cared enough to actually find out that it was a book in such a backwater town.

It probably was some advanced sorcery they still believed as sacred power.

My father also didn't ask the right question, just because I don't exactly know where the book is doesn't mean I can't find it.

"Astris Oculus" I muttered.

A projection of the book appeared in front of me as I smiled. The restraint upon sorcery here is relatively low-leveled.

While I would have trouble forming an offensive sorcery like Astris Fulo, the interference has problems with blocking any previously set up sorcery.

Astris, in the case of sorcery means star, an embodiment. Being a sorcerer of the star or Astris affinity makes it necessary for me to use the Astris prefix in all my incantations, much like of a gravity or Gravitas sorcerer must use Gravitas for their prefix.

According to the book there are some sorcerers who have used multiple affinities, but it tells their story as a curse rather than a gift.

It was stated that sorcerers who practice multiple affinities cannot evolve past a certain level and that the power becomes lacking when you practice more then one affinity. For example, a sorcerer of the exact same realm with a life or Virgo affinity can make a better death inducing sorcery than a sorcerer with a death and fire affinity.

In other works, jacks of all trades cannot compete. It's also worth mentioning that if a user of multiple affinities only uses one affinity it will cause the rest of the affinities to disappear forever, ultimately fixing any problems they have with their sorcery.

As for me, I've already checked my affinity and I only have Astris, which means I could start my journey as a sorcerer immediately and not waste time deciding on what affinity I should use for the rest of my life. It also helps me not spend an egregious amount of time phasing out all the affinities I won't use.

In case of my suffix, Oculus. It's literal translation is 'The Eye'. Using this in the full incantation, translates to 'The Eye of the Stars' the way this sounds seems grand, but how grand it actually is subject to the amount of aether used in the sorcery.

At my level, I can use this sorcery to create a projection of a 3rd person view on myself. It's a sorcery good for seeing places outside your current point of view.

Yet it also has a hidden function, at my level all it does is observe you. One can manipulate this by using Astris Nexus, 'The Binding of The Stars, Contractual' to bind an item to yourself and that way when you use Astris Oculus you can technically view the bounded item.

This works especially good with the Astris affinity because of its uniqueness, Astris not only represents stars but also position.

I looked at my book with the sorcery, still nothing had changed. There were no new insights for me to obtain.

I closed the projection to save aether. Sorcerers don't regenerate their mystical energy in meaningful amounts so its best to be stringent whenever possible.

Although I still have a surplus of aether thanks to my experiments, it will eventually dry out.

I then began another sorcery, this one was a bit more complex, so preparation and ritual were needed.
