Cherry's blood ran cold.
She couldn't bear to look at the woman behind the mirrored glass. Slowly, she turned away.
"That's what happens to women who try to escape," Elijah said. "When they're caught, they pour acid on their faces."
A cold smile spread across his lips.
"Do you really think you'll survive here without me?"
A loud crackle came from the speaker.
Then a woman screamed.
Cherry froze.
Her whole body trembled. She covered her ears, but it didn't help. The desperate cries cut straight through her, as if she were the one being tortured.
Tears filled her eyes.
She squeezed them shut, her chest tightening.
How could she save anyone when she couldn't even save herself?
How could anyone escape this hell?
Elijah watched her with satisfaction.
He stepped closer.
"Be with me," he said softly. "Or end up like them. The choice is yours."
Cherry's lips trembled.
She couldn't answer.
