"Retreat!" Guo Zhenfeng shouted, the Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe in his hand swinging around as he led the remaining mechas in a deadly push outward.
He didn't fly into the sky—it would make him a clear target. More importantly, he wanted to kill as many abyssal creatures as possible, to buy more time for his troops.
As a Titled Douluo with a soul core, his endurance far surpassed that of ordinary soldiers.
Just then, a strange, eerie laugh rang out.
Ding-ling-ling… A bell's chime echoed, and Guo Zhenfeng felt a sudden chill as the fury burning in his chest was momentarily snuffed out. His mind wavered for a split second.
A figure darted out from the swarm of abyssal creatures, moving with uncanny speed, and appeared right before him, striking at his chest with a palm.
On the battlefield, Guo Zhenfeng was undoubtedly a fierce war god. His Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe was unstoppable. But in the realm of soul masters, although he was powerful, he excelled more at large-scale warfare than in the complex maneuvers of a one-on-one duel.
A pitch-black battle armor appeared over his body just before the strike landed, managing to block it.
Even so, he felt a violent jolt in his chest as a wave of cold surged into him. A black halo beneath his feet exploded, blowing the enemy away in a blast of force. He retreated swiftly.
Only then did he catch a good look—just a young girl, barely in her teens, with a sweet and charming smile. But she was clearly human.
And yet, the surrounding abyssal creatures completely ignored her. Among all the grotesque monsters, her delicate appearance was incredibly jarring.
A massive bell floated behind her, swinging lightly as it emitted another series of clear chimes.
That haziness in his mind returned. Guo Zhenfeng roared in anger, "Holy Spirit Cult! You dare side with these monsters and betray the world?!"
"Heehee, yes, isn't it interesting? It's no use—this abyssal army, this is just the beginning. Surprised? Shocked?"
As she spoke, the Bell of Darkness raised her hand and pointed toward Guo Zhenfeng. The enormous bell behind her spun rapidly, then flew toward him like a missile.
Guo Zhenfeng's experience kicked in. He knew he couldn't afford to get caught in a duel. If he did, there might be no escape. He had already spotted several colossal abyssal lords slowly lumbering toward this position.
The Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe in his hand lit up with a blinding white glow as he brought it down in a slow, deliberate arc.
As the axe fell, his entire being turned solemn. His seventh and ninth soul rings erupted with brilliant light.
From his chest, his armor blazed with white fire and fused into his weapon. The energy it released was so overwhelming that it felt as if the world itself would collapse.
The Bell of Darkness showed a flicker of surprise. The massive bell shooting forward immediately withdrew. With a flash, she vanished into the bell.
And in the next moment, a blazing white beam of light, like a heavenly pillar, slashed through the entire battlefield.
That beam crashed into a mountain peak recently overrun by abyssal creatures. A sharp line split the mountain, followed by a thunderous explosion as the peak shattered into flying boulders, crushing dozens of abyssal creatures beneath the rain of debris.
That was his true goal. Force the Bell of Darkness back, destroy the peak, and reignite the fighting spirit of the Northern Army.
Without hesitation, Guo Zhenfeng turned and fled after the attack.
The Northern Army's artillery fire created a crossfire to cover his retreat.
"Leaving so soon? You'll break my heart," came the mischievous voice again, followed by another clear ding-ling-ling.
Guo Zhenfeng tensed. The axe in his hand danced like lightning, forming a sweeping wall of blades.
But at that moment, an explosion erupted to his left—a black-grade mecha was destroyed.
"Yazé!" Guo Zhenfeng screamed, pain flooding his voice. That was the captain of his guard regiment, someone who had followed him for over a decade. They were more than comrades—they were brothers.
Watching his brother die at the enemy's hands ripped his heart apart.
"No one's leaving," came the girl's sing-song voice.
Ding-ling-ling, ding-ling-ling!
The chimes rang again. The mechas surrounding Guo Zhenfeng began to shudder. The sonic and mental attacks were too much for these elite soldiers—without soul cores, they couldn't withstand such a combined assault, not even with their mechas' defenses.
"Super Douluo… she's at least at the Super Douluo level." Guo Zhenfeng's heart sank. He knew he stood no chance.
The Northern Army was the weakest among the eight military corps. Even Guo Zhenfeng himself had yet to reach the Super Douluo level. Against such a powerful enemy, he had no way to win.
If he were commanding from a formation, he might call in soul-guided weapons to counterattack. But here, on the battlefield, how could he issue commands?
Clearly, this enemy had targeted him specifically. A powerful opponent sent in immediately to assassinate him.
Then I'll risk everything!
Guo Zhenfeng clenched his teeth, releasing his spiritual power to track the Bell of Darkness.
But she was clever. Using the towering mechas around them for cover, she never showed herself directly. She constantly shifted position, never giving him a clear shot.
Her battle experience far exceeded his. She knew exactly how to suppress a commander.
And just then, the Northern Army's defense line finally began to crumble.
Over thirty colossal Ba'an-type abyssal creatures had formed a phalanx and were charging up the second mountain. This was another critical location—if lost, the defensive line would fragment, and the troops would be forced into isolated skirmishes.
Four hours? Forget four hours—they probably couldn't hold for even one more.
Mechas were falling all around. Comrades were dying one after another. Guo Zhenfeng's eyes turned bloodshot.
Finally, unable to bear it anymore, he let out a wild roar. Abandoning the chase for the Bell of Darkness, he dove straight into the densest cluster of abyssal creatures. If he was going to die, he'd take as many of them with him as he could.
The Bell of Darkness was…
