These abyssal creatures were utterly mad. They had no coordination, no tactics—only relentless assaults, launching themselves forward without a care for the cost.
Guo Zhenfeng stood atop a mountain, his face pale. Not far from him, a damaged red mecha was undergoing self-repair.
He had already launched several strikes, targeting the abyssal commanders, and had succeeded in delaying their advance somewhat.
That red mecha was recognized by every soldier in the Northern Army—it was the legendary "Green Peak Wargod," the most powerful mecha of the entire corps.
So whenever Guo Zhenfeng appeared on the battlefield, morale soared, and the soldiers rallied to repel the enemy time and again.
But the battle had lasted too long. It had now gone on for two full days. Humans weren't machines—they needed rest. But with the first three lines of defense having already fallen, there was no time to rest. Any moment of pause could mean annihilation.
Everyone was exhausted. They'd used nearly all of their military stimulants, and side effects were beginning to show. The fourth defensive line had started to show cracks. If this continued, it wouldn't last even three more hours.
"Where are the reinforcements? Why haven't they arrived yet?" Guo Zhenfeng roared into his soul communicator.
"Corps Commander, reinforcements are en route, but the distance is too great. Based on estimates, the first wave won't arrive for another four hours."
Guo Zhenfeng inhaled deeply, trying to calm his rage. "Understood."
He knew anger wouldn't change reality. The Extreme North was simply too far. The Federation had already done its best to mobilize reinforcements so quickly. Four hours…
A bitter smile appeared on Guo Zhenfeng's lips. He could only hope the reinforcements were strong enough to hold the rear lines.
For now, all he could do—all he must do—was hold the line at any cost. Even if the entire Northern Army was buried here, he had to buy time.
Returning to his mecha, he gently patted the machine that had accompanied him for years—a weapon his family had painstakingly built when he was promoted to Major General.
"Old friend, take a good rest. I'm going in." With that, his eyes lit up, and a powerful aura burst forth from his body.
He raised his right hand, and a massive battle-axe appeared in his grip.
It was a long-handled axe, over six meters long. Its front blade was a massive crescent, like half a wagon wheel, with a diameter of more than 1.5 meters. It radiated an oppressive weight.
The Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe—a formidable Tool Martial Soul.
Guo Zhenfeng let out a furious roar and leapt into the sky, heading straight for the newly breached opening. Behind him, over a hundred mechas took flight—all elite models of at least purple grade. This was his personal guard regiment, the best mech pilots in the corps.
Among the abyssal horde were massive numbers of cockroach- or ant-like creatures, as well as more dangerous ones like mantis-shaped beasts with deadly offense.
Through observation, Guo Zhenfeng had noticed: the more humanoid an abyssal creature looked, the stronger it was.
So at a glance, he spotted a monstrous abyssal creature the size of a small hill.
With a flash of light, his axe came crashing down like a divine judgment from the heavens.
"Destruction Slash!"—his first soul skill.
Though it was only a first skill, it was also the core of the Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe.
Unlike most soul masters, his martial soul had only three attack skills. All other skills enhanced those three core strikes, boosting their lethality.
This was the battle method of a soldier—on the battlefield, there was no need for fancy tricks, only the fastest, most effective way to kill.
Destruction Slash was exactly that kind of skill—capable of cleaving mountains.
The mountain-like abyssal beast looked up, its entire flabby body quivering and releasing clouds of putrid stench. It roared, hurling its thick limbs at Guo Zhenfeng.
"Crack! Crack!" Its arms were severed instantly, and the giant axe cleaved the creature in two, dissolving it into a cloud of grey mist. With a sweep of his weapon, swaths of abyssal creatures were turned to dust, relieving the pressure on that flank.
"Hold the line! Seal the breach!" he shouted as he charged forward, axe in hand like the tip of a spear, ready to slay anything in his path.
This breach was located at a strategic mountain peak, about 300 meters high, offering a vantage point over the entire battlefield. It also contained crucial detection and defense soul devices. Losing this peak would be like gouging out the eyes and ears of the fourth line—it could not be lost!
To lose it was to lose the very lifeline of the defense.
Just then, a familiar cracking noise came from behind.
Guo Zhenfeng spun around and saw a blurry figure flash past. After the crack, an explosion erupted—a purple-grade mecha had been destroyed.
"Bastard!" he roared. He recognized that mecha—it belonged to a promising young officer in his guard unit. Someone he saw every day.
His eyes turned red with rage. The Mountain-Crushing Destruction Axe swept out, sending a flood of light blades across the area.
Over a hundred abyssal beasts were cut down instantly. But then, he felt a sudden chill at his side.
Guo Zhenfeng instinctively twisted, barely dodging the strike, but his uniform was torn.
A figure appeared—voluptuous, exaggeratedly so, and vaguely humanoid, but with clearly non-human traits.
Before he could see clearly, the figure vanished again.
He swung his axe horizontally—only to strike empty air.
Just then, multiple high-pitched shrieks echoed. The mountaintop defenses were breached. Explosions erupted, engulfing the abyssal invaders in flame.
"Bastards!" Guo Zhenfeng cursed, his eyes bloodshot.
He knew what had happened. The Northern Army soldiers stationed atop the peak had chosen to detonate everything, sacrificing themselves to take the enemy with them.
They couldn't hold the line. Not anymore.
The abyssal creatures were too strong.
And his warriors—his brothers—they were growing fewer and fewer…
While the abyssals… just kept coming.
