While Reed and the others were still discussing how to perfect the mind of Korvac, Kang began frantically accumulating technology in his own kingdom. Fortunately, he had an endless supply of time. He could spend decades completing his research, while only a second passed for Spider-Man.
Thus, in the very next moment, Kang the Conqueror appeared before them. Once again, this new, not-quite-enemy but persistent figure had arrived. He was dressed, as always, in his boldly purple battle armor, seated on his throne, and addressing the superheroes before him with his declaration.
"Avengers, the great Kang thanks you for your contribution, but now, the great Kang has completed your task." Kang the Conqueror once again took out his small pistol and aimed it at Korvac. "This weapon will stitch up the spatial rift caused by this variable, filling the world completely. Now, Avengers, stand down!"
"Wait, we haven't verified the consequences of closing the rift from the outside..."
Reed Richards shouted almost instinctively, but it was too late to stop Kang the Conqueror from deploying his secret weapon. However, just as the beam was about to hit Korvac, a strand of web stuck to Korvac's back, yanking him away and dodging Kang's shot.
"First, why do you refer to yourself in the third person? Second, why do you put 'the great' in front of your name?" Peter shielded Korvac. "And third question, don't you get tired of talking like that all the time?"
"You are resisting pointlessly, Spider-Man."
"I'm already sick of your unannounced appearances, Kang."
Kang said no more, simply raising his small pistol. A green light flashed from the barrel. In that instant, Adam Warlock, sensing a peculiar fluctuation, cried out in surprise, "What?! It's the Time Stone!"
The Time Stone in Kang's hand?
Hmm, somehow that doesn't feel all that surprising. Peter's thought process lasted only a moment before he realized Kang had vanished. He reappeared behind them and fired a shot at Korvac—
—but the situation Kang imagined, where Korvac utterly disappeared and the crisis was averted, did not happen.
On the contrary, what occurred was far beyond Kang's wildest expectation. A brilliant energy erupted from Korvac's entire body, exploding in an instant. Kang, and everyone else present, was covered by the fierce light almost simultaneously.
Only Spider-Man's and Adam Warlock's warnings were delivered in time. Then, with a blinding flash of light, everything was annihilated, as if nothing had ever existed.
"I... I'm still alive?"
Gwen woke up to find herself lying in a grassy field. The surroundings felt familiar, like the lawn in Central Park, but somehow different.
Her clothing had transformed into the suit she had designed for herself, the one that might never have become real, except this suit was black, more ferocious, and looked very dangerous.
[Of course, you're still alive.]
A voice appeared inexplicably in Gwen's mind. After a moment, Gwen realized what she was wearing and greeted the voice awkwardly, "Uh, hey, you're Venom, right? I heard Peter talk about you."
[Uh-huh.]
"So... what happened?" Gwen tried hard to recall the events. When Thor went after Korvac, Peter wanted to persuade Gwen to leave, but Gwen wanted to stay and watch. So, Korvac arrived, then a guy in purple appeared, and then... Korvac seemed to explode?
So, did Peter have Venom cover her at the moment of the explosion to protect her?
"Where's Peter? Is he alright?"
[I don't know, but he should still be alive.]
Venom was mostly certain Peter was alive for no particular reason other than sheer intuition. As for where they were, even Venom didn't know. The instant of the explosion, they were transported here, to this unfamiliar patch of grass.
Gwen walked a few steps in the Symbiote Suit and uttered a "Wow," because this lawn wasn't just like Central Park; it was Central Park. After a few more steps, she could see Manhattan.
So where was she? Had she been teleported back to Manhattan? It didn't seem quite right; the New York she remembered from 2012 didn't have the Twin Towers.
"Hey, what are you doing there?!"
A police officer appeared and shouted at Gwen. Gwen paused for a moment before choosing to run quickly. She was astonished to find her running speed was incredibly fast, almost keeping pace with cars driving down the street. When a car at an intersection zoomed toward her, she sensed something and instinctively leaped, landing gracefully on the glass facade of a tall building.
"Whoa..."
Gwen was stunned by herself. Looking at her suited reflection in the glass, she curiously asked, "Are these Peter's powers?"
[Almost a one-to-one replication.]
"Cool, but where is Peter? Do you know?"
Venom genuinely didn't know. It wasn't Cindy Moon; it couldn't sense Peter's location anywhere and everywhere.
Gwen clumsily swung on a web, stealing a newspaper from a newsstand. This was the fastest way for her to figure out where she was and who was around. She climbed to the top of a skyscraper with the newspaper, surveying the entire Manhattan landscape.
"Something's seriously off... There's no Avengers Tower, no Baxter Building, but there's an Oscorp building. Why is there an Oscorp building?"
[Don't know.]
Gwen sat on the rooftop and unfolded the newspaper.
"Spider-Man Saves New York City: Spider-Man defeated the Vulture again in last night's battle, preventing the heinous evil scientist from releasing poison gas into the air. New York's hero protects his city once more — Reported by J. Jonah Jameson."
"What bizarre parallel universe is this? Did I travel to another universe?"
Gwen tilted her head and put the newspaper away. After a moment of thought, she decided to check out the Spider-Man of this world. It looked like this world's Peter had been Spider-Man for several years. Maybe if she found him, she could find a way back.
Peter Parker had always been a smart person. No matter what the situation, there's always a way.
